What makes this house unique

Watching crashing surf salt spray, breaching whales and leaping dolphins, and the sun rising over the Pacific ocean, all from the master bedroom's king sized platform bed - or while having coffee on the private lanai - or from the hot tub - or from the living room - views everywhere! Accompanied by the soundtrack of ocean, birds, frogs, and nothing more.

This is a gem of a house. If you want a vacation where you get away from it all but still be fairly close to the major sights, then this is the place for you. While there, we went zip lining, took an open doors helicopter tour of the volcano, drove up to the observatory, and visited numerous places suggested in the book the owners have made. The small town close by has four or five great restaurants to choose from. There is nothing quite like falling asleep to the sounds of the waves or coming “home” and having a swim and jacuzzi. I’ve even video taped the waves so that I can imagine myself back there on those stressful real life days! The owners have really thought of everything to make your stay hassle free and were a pleasure to communicate and deal with. I'm saving to get back there as soon as I can!

Loved this house!

My husband and I were looking for a quiet beautiful place to stay on the Big Island and was so happy we found Hale Mar. This house has everything we wanted including stunning views from any room in the house and we loved falling asleep to the sound of the ocean waves every night. There was also a lot of space and we hope to stay here again and bring our extended family to enjoy this house together.

Great home in cool part of island

My wife and three kids (10,13,15) stayed in this house for two days. Great access to the Kopola tide pools and volcano national park. This side of the island is culturally far different than anything the kids had seen before and so it was a great experience staying on this side of the island. It was great to have such a comfortable and safe place to stay in such an otherwise remote area. Everyone had plenty of space and privacy and the pool and hot tub were great for bringing us outside to enjoy the unbelievable view. The crashing waves were far larger than what we had experienced on the west side of the island and made for memorable nights of sleep! All the beds were extremely comfortable and the kitchen was fully stocked. It was great to have access to the garage. I wish we could have stayed longer.

One of a kind

Unforgettable vacation due in part to our lovely accommodations at Hale Mar. The hosts are terrific, easy to reach, super accommodating and eager to make us feel welcome in their home. The house is well appointed and the location is fantastic. The sounds of the ocean and of the frogs were magically relaxing every evening and although in a neighborhood with homes in fairly close proximity, the house feels very private and quaint. Although the neighborhood does not seem to have any restaurants or shops nearby, there is easy access to Hilo for shopping and dining.

We had a total of 6 persons staying in Hale Mar from 25-30th Dec 2016. It was the first time we had booked a holiday to USA on our own-no travel agent. The website & communication was brilliant. The booking was easy & Laura very helpful. Hale Mar is just like the pictures you found everything you wanted or needed within. The location stunning. I would love to stay again one day. Paradise

This beautiful house is located in an idyllic setting in a lovely Hawaiian neighborhood (no tourists). It was perfectly equipped for our family of 5- the kids spent hours in the pool every day. I miss waking up to that view! This was perfect for getting away from it all (but still 15 minutes to Pahoa or 30 to Hilo). Easy trip to Volcano, too. Laura responded immediately to any questions. So much better than a hotel.

Black sand beaches, rainforests with waterfalls, orchid farms, horseback riding, day and night time Volcano visits to live lava flows, whale watching and fishing from your back yard, swimming and snorkeling in giant tide pools, astronomy and skiing at the observatory, nature photography, wine tasting, art galleries, bird watching, golf, bicycling, whale and dolphin watching from your lanai, turtle sanctuary, macadamia nut farms, honey farms, coffee farms, Tsunami Museum, farmers' markets full of tropical fruit and flowers, rest and relaxation.

Other Activities: Volcanoes, coffee & orchid farms, wine tasting, museums, waterfalls.

Golf: So many golf courses to choose from! Hilo Municipal and Nanawali Country Club are the closest, just a 15 minute drive, and offer club and cart rental and driving ranges at a great price. Head to Volcano for a cool course at high altitudes on a hot day. Or drive around the island to try even more courses north, west and south of Hilo.

Ski: Yes, you can ski Hawaii! most winters there's a little snow atop Mauna Kea (about a 45 minute drive, near the Observatory) and Hawaiians avidly ski and snowboard!
