About the property

House, 1 Bedroom, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 2)

According to the Los Angeles Times travel section, Tanglewood House is the "perfect location for seeing the Wine Country of Sonoma/Napa." They also praised our "spacious guest suite, gourmet breakfasts, and beautiful garden setting."

Tanglewood House is a serene, romantic retreat in a secluded, park-like setting one mile from the historic village of Glen Ellen in Sonoma County. Located on a quiet country road and surrounded by over an acre of beautiful gardens, our Bed and Breakfast (B&B) is an ideal destination for couples who desire luxurious accommodations, complete privacy, and gracious hospitality when they visit the Sonoma Valley.

As our only guests, you will reside in one of the most spacious and elegantly appointed private suites in the Wine Country. Your sitting room is decorated with numerous works of art and features a fireplace, cathedral ceilings, satellite TV, wireless internet and refrigerator. Your adjoining bedroom overlooks a private patio and is furnished with country pine antiques and a queen-size bed, and the tub and shower in your bathroom are tiled in Italian marble. Your suite also has its own driveway and separate entrance.

In the morning, we serve gourmet breakfasts in your sitting room - fresh fruit and just-squeezed orange juice, French roast coffee, croissants, homemade bread, and entrees such as cheese and mushroom omelets with Canadian bacon, blueberry pancakes, or home fries with sausages. After breakfast, take a moment or two to stroll through our gardens as you prepare for a day of sightseeing. Nearby there are over a dozen fine wineries and Jack London State Park with its hiking trails, picnic areas, and horse rentals. The city of Sonoma, a short seven mile drive from Tanglewood House, is noted for its plaza, fine shops, and acclaimed restaurants.

It takes half-an-hour to drive to Napa Valley, fifty-five minutes to San Francisco, and an hour to the Pacific Coast. In the afternoon when you return to Tanglewood House, unwind by reading a book while you sunbathe by the pool, sip a glass of wine in the gazebo, or play a game of croquet on the lawn. We look forward to hosting your next visit to the Valley of the Moon.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Tanglewood House has to be one of our favorite places of all time. There is a certain magical quality to the place and the minute we step on the property we completely let go of our anxieties and enter into a calm, tranquil, beautiful setting that truly ministers to us deeply. We consider Tanglewood House our retreat center, our home away from home.

Lovely Home, Nice Hosts, Perfect Location

  • 5 of 5

The Tanglewood House was a great find. The locale was ideal for exploring the Sonoma (and Napa) wine country. The 2 bedroom attached house was reasonably priced for the area and the space was more than ample in size. The grounds are really lovely and peaceful. John and Mary were excellent hosts. Mary prepared a nice breakfast every morning which was a nice way to start the day looking out the windows at the gardens and the birds. John has a lot of knowledge on the local vineyards and wineries that he was happy to share with his guests. .

A nice unexpected bonus of staying at Tanglewood was a pass that can be used at a number of very local wineries for a free tasting. I personally liked Loxton Cellars (practically a stones throw down the road) which was a very small and intimate winery and also Kunde Family Winery (about 3 miles away) which was the polar opposite; large and stunning grounds and reserve wines that were really special. They also have a trip you can take to the top of their mountain which includes a tour of their wine caves and a tasting which I recommend. The pass is good for tastings at both of these wineries and a number of others.

While I would unhesitatingly recommend the Tanglewood House, I do have a couple of recommendations that I think would make it even more pleasant for the guests. First I would invest in a slightly bigger refrigerator. They have a tiny mini fridge that really is not adequate for keeping very much cold. Guests travelling around this area are likely to purchase local fruits and treats, and of course wine that might need refrigerating, as well as leftovers from the restaurants. The ice cube tray in the mini-fridge is ridiculously tiny (pellets not cubes). And I would also suggest leaving some bottled water for the guests. I would also have liked a small microwave in the room. There is more than adequate room for both of these items in the living area. Also one waste-basket in the bathroom was not enough. These are not expensive upgrades, and your guests will appreciate it, and I for one would have had no qualms paying a few bucks extra on my tab to pay for this. But as I said, this would not in any way prevent me from recommending or returning to Tanglewood House. It was a really nice memorable experience.

Quiet, Cozy Home

  • 5 of 5

We had a great time staying at Tanglewood House. The breakfast was amazing every morning, the main house doggies (especially Brooklyn) were very sweet. It's just off the Sonoma Hwy so easy go to get to the wineries, but you feel tucked away from the hustle and bustle. Definitely recommend!

Quiet and Relaxing

  • 5 of 5

This home is perfect if you are looking to relax and unwind. It's peaceful and quiet and close to Napa and San Francisco. We were very happy with our stay here and the location of the house. We were treated very well by John and Mary. We woke up every morning to a beautiful breakfast prepared by Mary. We couldn't have had a better experience in California. Thank you so much!

Home away from home!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I just returned from 5 nights in Sonoma. I chose the Tanglewood House because of it's location and reviews. Wow! Mary and John have a little piece of heaven! We started each morning with a delicious homemade breakfast served overlooking their meticulous gardens. Days spent exploring the wineries, parks and coastline. Our favorite destinations included Benziger and Korbel wineries, Bodega Bay, Armstrong Woods, the Russian River Valley and the Glen Ellen Star for dinner. Every night we arrived home to the light on and a new supply of wood for the fireplace. The perfect way to end each day! Thank you Mary and John. You made our trip so relaxing and fun. We hope to return again soon!

We loved being so pampered!

  • 5 of 5

Imagine that you're sitting with your husband at a lovely small table overlooking a beautiful garden, and there are 7 different species of birds at a bird feeder about 5 feet outside your window. You can also see a beautiful gazebo not far away, surrounded by flowers.

Then for your breakfast, Mary first brings in coffee plus a beautiful crystal goblet filled with fresh berries and topped with cream. The goblet sets upon a floral china plate and to the side is a freshly ironed linen napkin. She leaves you to enjoy it and returns in a little while with heated plates of eggs and sausage, or perhaps an omelette, or cinnamon French toast, whatever gourmet delight you choose to have that day. The setting is beautiful, the food divine. Had we come in the winter, we would have had a fire in the fireplace.

Mary and John offer wonderful advice on the areas vineyards, restaurants, and other attractions. We particularly enjoyed the Jack London State Park and took a wonderful hike through the woods with a park volunteer who told us all about the park and museum.
