I am back in Bermuda safe and sound. I am now at my desk facing the challenges and stresses of my world. Glenville was a welcome respite from all this craziness.
I had an absolutely wonderful time at Glenville. As I told you, almost all of my trips (about 12 times a year) involve staying in large hotels with all the creature comforts one could want. However, my spirit prefers to be surrounded by little "concrete" and lots of Mother Nature's bounty and so, Glenville was a beautiful diversion from the "large hotel scene". The gardens were beautiful; the sound of birds singing to me each morning and the home-baked goodies were a special treat :) I have yet to see the turtles
that are purported to be cavorting around the property :)
I really appreciated your warm hospitality and the relaxing atmosphere. I shall definitely be promoting Glenville as a place to get away form all the "hustle and bustle".
We experienced extremely friendly and efficient service from the time we began to research the property. Barbara was quick to answer all of our questions by e-mail, and reserving and arranging payment was smooth. We were warmly greeted by Barbara and Sugrim, and presented with coconut bread right out of the oven, with additional treats throughout the week. She arranged a tour for us, and helped us find our way to local shops and restaurants, and could not have been.
The property is safe, clean, and tranquil. Prepare to be visited by chickens, turtles, and the occasional monkey or cat. The grounds are beautiful with all kinds of flowers, banana, mango, and mahogany trees.
The cottages are immaculately clean, private, and impeccably decorated with keen attention to detail. They are cleaned twice a week-- with full cooking facilities, fridge, kettle, microwave, stove, and a safe and A/C in your bedroom.
It would have been quite enough to stay in the cottage for the full stay-- but alas, there were other things to do on the island! The cottages are a 5 minute walk from the beach, and an easy walk to shops, farmer's market, restaurants, and buses into Bridgetown and Oistins.
We loved the relaxing tranquil atmosphere and of course, our hosts-- who have created a relaxing island getaway, and one that we will be returning to. Glenville is a testament to the warmth and hard work of her owners Barbara and Sugrim and their staff Claude and Deb. We only wished we could have stayed longer. Book early-- word is getting out!
My husband and I decided to spend our first wedding anniversary in the lovely Glenville Gardens in sunny Barbados
The cottages are set within lovely grounds abundant with beautiful trees, flowers and wildlife including humming birds, the resident turtles and chickens. We had a one bedroom cottage which was charming and had a lovely porch to sit out on for breakfast or an evening drink and enjoy the birdsong and peaceful atmosphere. The main kitchen/diner/living room was spacious and well stocked to cater for yourself easily. The grounds were gated and we felt safe/secure at all time. The accommodation was clean, well maintained, comfortable beds, all you could ask for. Barbara (and the family) are fantastic hosts giving you advice when you need it and also very helpful - Barbara went to a lot of trouble to arrange a car hire for us. On arrival we were greeted with a warm welcome and throughout our stay we had lovely surprises such as homemade banana bread and shortbread.
To make it even better, the location is perfect. By car/taxi, it is close to the airport (about 20 minutes), close to Bridgetown (about 15 mins), but what is amazing is how much is within walking distance. It is a few minutes walk to the Hastings Boardwalk and the beautiful Accra/Rockley beach. We didn't realise at first how lucky we were to have this particular beach on the doorstep - we visited others during our stay and concluded that this was one of the best. In addition, within walking distance and on the beach front are some amazing higher-end restaurants, being Champers (where we had our wedding anniversary meal), Naru (Japanese/sushi), Tapas, Blakeys, etc. There is a small shopping centre close by which has some fast food outlets and a handy convenience shop to pick up basics for breakfast and drinks. Also, there is a bus stop within a few minutes walk which takes you along the main road around the south/west of the island and only costs 1 USD. We caught the bus to go the Oistins Fish Fry on the Friday night (about 15 minutes away by bus) which we would certainly recommend.
If you are looking for a self-catered base which also happens to be a peaceful, beautiful little retreat with great hosts set in a fantastic location in terms of beach, restaurants and shops, then look no further.
The reviews on this location are in fact all accurate - this is a cant miss location and site for anyone looking to enjoy some time in Barbados. Hidden behind a gated wall, Glenville Gardens is four, quaint well equipped cottages, lush gardens and a small menagerie of animals. Starting the day on your porch with a tea and a book, a short walk to Accra beach for the afternoon, and then many restaurant choices around for dinner, this was a perfect spot to escape the Canadian winter. Public transit was close, cheap and reliable with easy access to Bridgetown, Oistins and Worthing beach where a free swim with the turtles was a highlight. And yes, Ottawa vacationers, you are a 10 minute walk to the Caribbean home of the Ottawa Senators. The best part however are the owners. Warm, attentive and always helpful, Barbara and Sugrim were like staying with family. Its not often I hug my property owner goodbye. If you don't need or want a resort experience and want a home away from home, this is your place.
Perfectly situated just up the road from the Ocean boardwalk, surrounded by a beautifull, fenced garden full of colorful flowers and fauna to be discovered. A paradise for kids to play around and make friends with turtles, monkeys, hens and humming birds. We stayed in one of the appartments, which was very nice, clean and spacious for two people.
A quick and easy walk to Accra Beach and even to the Gap and Dover Beach, if you don't mind stretching your legs further.
Lots of nice restaurants and a convenient store near by.
The hosts, Barbara and her husband, are very nice, welcoming and helpfull. (And Barbara's banana bread is to die for!)
Can't wait to go back!
We had a very relaxing and enjoyable time at Glenville gardens. The property is at an ideal location and is only a two minutes away from the beach. The property has a very intriguing history and has many fruit trees, scented shrubs and bushes. Each cottage is beautifully equipped and well stocked.
Barbara and Sugrim are charming and extremely efficient hosts,we enjoyed her delectable baking enormously !Thank you so much for a memorable stay !
So many reviews, and they just keep on mounting, 5 star all the way! We were lucky enough to spend 25 nights at Glenville Gardens and enjoyed every minute from when we entered the gates, (greeted by Barbara and Sugrim), until we left the gates, (after saying good-bye to this wonderful couple). We agree with all the reviews submitted about atmosphere, accommodations, scenery, cleanliness, gardens etc. I am missing feeding the tortoises and Ash the chicken but most of all Barbara's warm hand delivered baking and Sugrim's witty sense of humour. Debra is a very hard worker but is laughing all the time and does a wonderful job maintaining the cottages and Claude the gardener was always willing to have a chat as were Barbara and Sugrim. We are already booked for next year and look forward to seeing Barbara and Sugrim and staff.
