Down House - Elegant And Imposing Period House Within Yards Of Crooklets Beach

Bedrooms 5
Property type house
Minimum Stay 1 - 7 nights

About the property

Sleeps 12 - Five Bedrooms, Five Bath/shower Rooms Overlooking Golf Course

Down House is an imposing and elegant residence situated with views over the golf course and within a few minutes’ walk of the fabulous beach at Crooklets Bay and also the centre of Bude which has an excellent array of restaurants and shops. Noted for its charm, Bude is a terrific centre to base your holiday and offers fine dining, a host of sports activities along with the hugely popular surfing. Local beaches are all easily accessible from the house and a holiday here will leave you feeling chilled and relaxed.

Down House offers five lovely bedrooms and five bath/shower rooms and the whole has been exquisitely renovated and furnished to the highest standards. The king size and double bedrooms are both en-suite and there is a double bedroom on the ground floor with a shower room adjacent. This is ideal for anyone who has any walking or mobility difficulties and all the living areas are also on the ground floor meaning no steps or stairs. A further super king bedroom upstairs has far reaching views over the golf course and there is a terrific four bedded bunk room ideal for children. The family bathroom has a cast iron roll topped bath as well as a shower and there is a full wet room with two showers on the ground floor – perfect for rinsing off after a day at the beach or a good surf.

The Mark Wilkinson kitchen boasts a Rangemaster oven and all modern amenities with granite worktops making cooking an absolute joy. This leads to the open plan Orangery that invites relaxation and is perfect for dining and spending hours chatting – perfect for those long, warm and friendly evenings that remain in the memory for so long. Should the evenings chill a little you can light the wood burning stove which swivels to give either a glorious glow over the dining table or the comfy seating area – once you have slumped in the deep and well cushioned sofas you will not want to move! A small children’s den will keep them out of your hair and with a completely separate sitting room, again with a wood burning stove, there is masses of space for everyone to spread out and do their own thing.

Four televisions, two DVD players, Wi-Fi, Sky and an I-Pod docking station give plenty of scope for entertainment and the garden is well equipped with tables and chairs and barbecue and catches the evening sun.

Down House is a stunning property in all senses. Perfect for large family gatherings and for friends wishing to get together and celebrate special occasions. A lovely house that creates a very special holiday home and one that is highly recommended.

2nd great stay in a lovely house in a fab location

  • 5 of 5

Our 2nd stay at this house and it didn't fail to impress again. The house is great for a large group with plenty of communal space and good size bedrooms. The property was clean and tidy with tasteful Christmas decorations and a lovely welcome pack. We had an issue with the dishwasher but Nick was straight out to see if he could help (given the time of year it was tricky to get a technician) which was much appreciated. The location is perfect, once you arrive you don't need to get back in the car. Cots and highchairs were provided and there is a stair gate at the top of the stairs. The garden is all enclosed so a great little extra space for the kids to burn of some energy.

I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Down House

Already booked to go back for our 3rd visit!!

Thanks again for a great stay

Lovely house in a great location

  • 5 of 5

The property was beautifully clean when we arrived and it was so lovely to see a Christmas tree all lit up and decorated. The house was warm and comfortable with a very nice kitchen. There was plenty of room for everyone and it is very close to the beaches and an easy stroll into town.

Nick Compton is a pleasure to deal with and the extra touches like milk in the fridge when you arrive ready for your first cup of tea make all the difference. Elite West are the best letting agents we have dealt with and we look forward to our next holiday booked through them.

Great family accommodation in good location

  • 5 of 5

We go to Bude A LOT and have stayed in B and B's, hotels and houses and this has been one of the best.

The house was clean, tidy, spacious with good accommodation upstairs and down.

The downstairs open plan space worked well with designated areas and a useful separate large lounge. The utility room with wet room was ideal for sandy or muddy kids

Upstairs all the bedrooms were really good sizes and all the beds were comfortable.

Kitchen reasonably well equipped and loads of extra towels if needed. No child/ baby equipment as such but Nick did a brilliant job providing what we needed at no extra charge

If we had to pick one fault, sound travels from upstairs and downstairs (only an issue for us with small babies waking at stupid hours and a relative in a downstairs bedroom) You can hear people walking around upstairs

Nick was super efficient in both the booking process and when we had a query on arrival

Would have no concern recommending this property and we will be looking to re book

We had a take away from La Bocca which was good. Also, not been for a while but would recommend Elements and Life's a Beach. The Beach House Hotel was good for lunch and dinner. Rosie's at the end of the road was really handy. Waitrose delivered to us but Sainsburys, Morrisons and Aldi all on the doorstep.

Large well-equiped property close to beaches.

  • 5 of 5

This property is well-maintained and ideal for large families or two smaller families sharing. It's within easy walking distance to the local beaches, shops and golf course. It has a small enclosed back garden and a pleasant front garden with views of the golf course. The property itself has been designed to ensure cooking, dining and relaxing can take place in a large, modern and attractive space whilst offering the flexibility of a separate and comfortable lounge. The bedrooms are a good size and there a plenty of bathrooms. Bude itself has fabulous beaches which are patrolled by R.N.L.I lifeguards. There is an out-door sea pool loved by locals and visitors alike. The beaches are ideal for those wishing to surf and Zuma Jay, a local surf shop, can supply your needs. There are lots of places to eat but my favourites are Life's a Beach, The Bank and The Falcon. Bude has a pretty town centre with a nice variety of independent shops. The property is managed by a local holiday letting company who are efficient, friendly and very reliable.

Owner's Response: Thank you Sue for your lovely review and really delighted you have already booked for next year. Just for clarity the house is only ever let to one group at any one time - we don't expect you to share the house with other families!

Fabulous winter week

  • 5 of 5

We were a party of 9 with 6 adults and 3 children aged between 5 and 9. Down House was perfect for us, all the bedrooms are really comfortably appointed and two are ensuite, the 3 girls loved the quad bunk room. There are actually 5 bathrooms in total, two of which are on the ground floor. We loved the huge open plan kitchen, living and dining area and spent a lot of time here including a very wet afternoon listening to rain lashing the glass whilst we played board games and drank wine in front of the log burner. Having an additional main lounge meant there was ample space for all whilst the enclosed garden was perfect for children and the dog! We had mixed weather but then it was February! and still managed a fabulous day at Tintagel and Trebarwith Strand with clear blues skies and sunshine, a blustery walk at Mawgan Porth then lunch in Padstow plus lots of time spent walking the cliff path and on Crooklets Beach. The locals were very friendly and everything you needed was in easy reach. Nick was so helpful in organising this for us and no question went un-answered. The house is exceptionally well appointed and we would love to return one day.

Stunning family home with space for all ages.

  • 5 of 5

Having stayed in many Elite West's properties our expectations were high and we were not disappointed. 3 generations fitted easily into the wonderful space downstairs - enough to share and yet still be able to find a quiet spot (manly for challenges at rummy with my 7 year old grand-daughter - she generally won). The property is finished to a high standard and the wet room is a real boon for families with sandy children and dogs. The children preferred the wet room to the main showers. The garden is discreet and provided good playing space when we weren't on the beach. An easy walk from all the attractions and restaurants in Bude the position is excellent. As usual the service provided by Nick was helpful and having a "friend" in Bude is a great thing to have. We always return to Elite West because of Nick's unfailing help and will certainly have no concerns about going back to Down House. Friends who visited whilst we were there are already asking if this is a "new annual tradition".
