Set in the jungle, above the village and beautiful beach of Matapalo on the Pacific Coast, this house invites you to have a true Costa Rican experience! Even the 4X4 road to the house is fun! Just minutes from the beach, there is an amazing 180 degree view of the ocean. Enjoy the local sightings of toucans, parrots, soaring hawks, several kinds of monkeys, coatis, blue morpho butterflies and many other wildlife visitors from the patio deck, while still being close to lots of activities and unique adventures. Have an action-packed vacation or just lie in the hammock by the pool and read.
The house has an open, comfortable feeling with tile floors and beautiful wood ceilings and doors. The kitchen, dining room and living room all open to each other and the outdoors. Ceiling fans throughout the house keep the cooler mountain air moving. Downstairs there is a master bedroom (queen bed) and connected bathroom, a single bed tucked under the stairway and another full bathroom. Upstairs there are 2 bedrooms (1 w/double bed and single bed and 1 w/double bed only) and 1 full bathroom with a covered deck for bird watching and sunset cocktails.
We live and work in Walnut Creek, California, east of San Francisco. Our children and grandchildren all live in the Bay Area.
The Owner purchased this villa in 2003
This get-a-way property allows us to enjoy an entirely different ecosystem and culture, as well as provides us a place to read and rest. We like the slow pace, but being near so many fun adventures.
We just returned from two weeks at Casa Sunset. Matapalo is a great location if you enjoy being away from the crowds. Just to the north and south are two larger towns, Quepos and Dominical, with all of their amenities, each close to a National Park. It was easy to travel either direction and nice to "come home" to your own bit of paradise. Casa Sunset has spectacular views of the ocean and sunsets to die for. Yes, you do have to travel up a steep road to get there. Along that very road we saw Capuchin monkeys and the large trees at the house attract many birds. We saw parrots, toucans, laughing falcons and many other small colorful birds while sitting on the patio. We saw sloths every day along the beach road in Matapalo. In other words, you don't have to travel far to see much of the amazing wildlife Costa Rica is famous for. The house has all you need, we cooked dinner for ourselves every night. My husband especially enjoyed grilling. As nice as the house is, you will find that you will spend most of your time in the outdoor space. Casa Sunset has a wonderful pool and patio. Some is undercover in case of the occasional shower. You can open the large french doors and have the wonderful indoor/outdoor living that Cost Rica's climate allows. Perfect!!!
We spent 9 wonderful days at Casa Sunset! The moment we got there time stopped! All we wantes to do is read, nap and dip in the pool... and the kids were on the same pace.
The house is fully equipped, very confortable and spacious. As for the beach, we had Playa Matapalo for ourselves!!
A 4x4 is mostly necessary to reach the house since there's a "jurassic Road" to ride on.
We left the house with sadness but with wonderful memories. Thank you Connie for your hospitality!
Ps: the matresses need to be replaced...the beds aren't confortable (at least for the master bedroom and the room with patio upstairs)
We spent a wonderful holiday week with our adult son and daughter at this very private piece of paradise conveniently located on the Central Pacific Coast of Costa Rica. Local wildlife sightings as well as a diverse array of exotic flowers around the home rival that of nearby Parque Nacional Manuel Antonio and Hacienda Baru National Wildlife Refuge. A variety of colorful parrots and toucans joined us each evening on the patio for the fabulous sunsets. The open air design and ceiling fans compliment the ocean breeze and help keep the home cool in the evenings. The pool is ideal for laps or just floating about and enjoying the view of the jungle and Pacific Ocean.
This beautiful and secure home, perched on a bluff above Matapalo and only a few minutes from the main highway, is reached by taking a steep winding road through the dense jungle. Good dining is available in Matapalo as well as Quepos, Dominical and further South in Ojochal where there are a couple of excellent gourmet restaurants. Fresh local fish is also available in Domincal and can be barbequed at the house. Shopping is available in nearby Quepos, Dominical and further south in Uvita where most groceries and dry goods commonly found in Europe and the US can be found, including some surprisingly good wines from Chile and Argentina. The home is just a few minutes from Playa Matapalo, where we had the entire beach to ourselves.
We also rate this place as a 4.5 – it would be a 5 except for a couple of maintenance issues. We wouldn’t hesitate for a moment to return in the future
Our family has members that go from 1year and a half to 60 years old and we were all very comfortable at this place,we stayed for 4 days. The kitchen has everything you need to prepare any meal. The rooms are comfortable, big enough, the bathrooms are nice. The Fans and keeping the doors open are enough to get a nice temperature inside. The pool is ok for kids and adults, we got to see toucans every day!!!
The only issue we had is that we do not have a 4WD car and it is required to get there! there's no other way to get to the house (that's why the view is lovely from the balcony). But as costaricans , we are used to walk :), so it was not a big deal.
I recommend the place, the beach is not crowded at all. Very peacefull.
My wife and I spent 18 days at this wonderful place. We enjoyed sitting in the pool at sunset, watching the Toucans and the parrots in the tree by the house. The location is ideal - close to beaches, many good resturants.
The caretaker (Greg) is enjoyable and helpful and enjoyable to visit with.
We rate this place a 4.5 - it would be a 5 except for some maintenance issues that I am sure are addressed by now. We would love to return in the future.
