Helston Barn Rental Photos and Description

Studio Barn very close to the beach

Just yards from the beach in this tranquil, quintessential Cornish fishing village, an enchanting detached stone studio. Close to beautiful coastal walks leading around the Lizard peninsula and along the shoreline of the Helford River. Full of character with a mezzanine double bed area enjoying glimpses of the sea, kitchenette, living area and a shower/utility room, packing everything one would need into a perfectly formed space. Ideally located with a tranquil part of Cornwall yet close proximity to the Helford River, Helston, Lizard Peninsula. Nearby attractions include Goonhilly, Trelowarren, Roskilly's and local diving at Polkerris.

Great for short or long breaks away from the city. Ideal for those who want quiet break away from the hustle and bustle of work and traffic noise.

From the Cornish meaning 'port at the end of the moor', Porthallow's history has always been inextricably linked with the sea. A former thriving Pilchard port, small fishing boats are still hauled onto the beach to this day. A number of buildings in the village also exhibit tell tale signs of the industry, if a little less obvious to the casual observer - The Association's Institute building is sighted over a former pilchard cellar!

Set in the heart of the small fishing village of Porthallow with the beach is just a few minutes' walk away. The South West Coast Path is just 50 metres from the studio, offering excellent coastal views across Falmouth Bay to St. Anthony's Head, and a beautiful walk to Gillan Creek and the Helford River. Porthallow beach is used by local fishermen, and it is possible to drive onto the beach to launch canoes and dinghies. The local pub, The Five Pilchards, offers a warm welcome to visitors and there is a craft shop with locally made pottery. The village shops in St Keverne, just a couple of miles away, offer comprehensive supplies. The local wildlife is abundant, with buzzards circling over the valley and seals occasionally visiting the bay. The Old Stable is in probably one of the most peaceful spots in Cornwall, and offers the opportunity for a truly relaxing holiday by the sea.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Ode to The Old Stable

From Pralla's Old Stable, I was certainly able

To enjoy a whole week, exploring Mullion to Gweek. Around all Lizard's coast, I can defnitely boast, Many miles of walking and scenic recording.

But knowing each day, a good place to stay,

The Old Stable cosy and, when I felt dozy,

A comfy warm bed, to lay down my head,

This was all I could ask for.....

I'll be back for more!

Perfect get away in lovely secluded hamlet

  • 4 of 5

The property is small but very tastefully decorated and the owners have done a great job of making use of the space available. The kitchenette is well equipped and the wet room and loo are in a good spot underneath the mezzanine sleeping space. The shower was also just right in terms of water pressure and heat. I loved the hamlet of Pothallow and the Five Pilchards pub (1 minute stroll) was perfect for our first meal there! Having the stable so near the water was also a real delight, providing lovely beach strolls first thing in the morning before heading out. Other bonuses included proximity to the coastal path walkways and the unique delicious Fat Apples cafe just up the hill.

Only downside for future renters is the mezzanine bedroom is tricky to access if you're very tall or infirm (but there is a sofa bed at ground level). If you're looking for a quiet, restful, away from the crowds place to escape to with access to the southern Cornish coast this is the perfect property!

Compact, comfortable old stable close to sea & pub serving quality food in generous portions

  • 4 of 5

We had a happy stay at this compact but cleverly designed old stable; ideal for one or two people. There isn't much room inside but then you are there to enjoy the great outdoors and the sea is so nearby. We liked sleeping on the bed (mezzanine) with a velux window above so you could hear the sea, birds and feel the breeze when in bed. We used the pub the five pilchards, like the pebbly beach virtually on your doorstep, for our evening meals rather than trying to cook in the small kitchen space. The food is home cooked and locally sourced, where possible. Excellent value for enormous portions (starters and desserts mostly £5 and mains roundabout a tenner). You are best to reserve a table though as we found it was fully booked when we hadn't and they often get full up with divers who use nearby divers centre and walking groups who pass/detour using the south west coastal path (we'd recommend look up their phone number on the website and book for your arrival night). From the beach you can take a beautiful walk, for about 30-45 minutes, hugging the coastline to Portkerris beach (also pebbly, where the divers centre is based) and then breakfast relaxedly at a simple cafe on the beach with great cooked breakfast (again very generous portions). We tend to like more quieter, down to earth places and Porthallow and the stable studio ticked those boxes for us.

We thought all the driving around the area was very beautiful and of course the coast line everywhere is spectacular. You can always find quiet coves and simpler down to earth places if you prefer or go for the more touristy one where the cafes are more standard (boring, in our book) but might be handier for people with children. Although we found parking places (the national trust is doing a great job in providing access) near to quieter coves on both sides of the lizard peninsular and there were plenty of parents who did bother bringing kids and picnics to these less populated/touristy spots too. Kynance beach was very beautiful and has a cafe to reward yourself for getting there (there is a national trust car park but you will still have to walk to get to the beach; it is worth it and it is also on the south west coastal path)

Do stop off on your way at sainsbury's in helston if you want to stock up on things; they sell things like body boards/wetsuits, which we found useful to enable us to enjoy the cold sea).

A very special place in a beautiful sleepy village

  • 5 of 5

A very cosy, homely place with a good use of small space. I spent 5 nights here and didn't want to leave. An ideal place if you want to get away from it all. Booking was hassle free and owners responded within an hour, great service and I will be staying here again soon. Highly recommended.
