Owner purchased this House in 2005
Why Owner chose Halifax
We bought this old church in 2005 and Brett set to restoring it. While working on it he was insipred to write songs in a way that he hadn't for a few years. St. Cecilia, the patron saint of musicians, must have been speaking to him! Not only did he write songs for a great project titled St. Cecilia Soul, he was also inspired to turn the church into a recording studio. The unique space hosted many other recording artists in it's time as a studio as well as was the location for film productions and sound design for many TV series. Alas, our business days in the music industry are coming to an end and recording studios aren't what they used to be. Now, we are thrilled to share this inspirational space with travelers looking to enjoy beautiful Halifax.

We stayed at the church in the aftermath of Hurricane Dorian. We had no electricity, but that didn't stop our gracious hosts Brett and Lara from offering us alternative places to stay, which we declined, and making our adventures memorable. Brett brought a cooler, some wine, candles and a ton of hospitality over. The church is exceptionally beautiful by candlelight. They also made a lovely meal for us at their home where we spent a totally delightful evening of conversation with all the guests. The electricity and water were returned during our stay. Throughout it all, we felt extremely lucky to have this time in the exquisitely decorated church with the most gracious of hosts. It is time like these that challenge our perspectives and open our eyes to the beauty of the human soul. Thank you, Brett and Lara, for your open arms. Until next time......
The house was beautiful. A gem in the cove. Beautiful inside, and a gorgeous deck outside.
The owners was kind, helpful, and welcoming.
St. Cecilia by the Sea Aug/19
We thoroughly enjoyed the stay. Certainly a unique property and obviously a labour of love for the proprietor. A vehicle is essential.
We really enjoyed our stay at St. Cecilia at the Sea. It was great talking with Brett and learning all about the history of the church.
An Unusual, Enjoyable House near Halifax
I always wanted to stay in an "extreme home", that is, a house converted from some other type of building. This tiny church, St. Cecilia by the Sea, was completely gutted and renovated by the thoughtful Brett Ryan. Brett met us on the first day to show us around the house and answer any questions. He is delightful and was very responsive to questions during our 3 week stay. Our only downside was the heat upstairs in the two bedrooms in July. Brett is working on getting a better air conditioning system, which will help for those occasional sweltering days and nights. It was a surprise to us, living in Florida, to find there were days that were hotter in Halifax than back home! The kitchen was well stocked and perfect for us, as we cooked in most of our meals. I loved our stay, and the house location was perfect to explore central Nova Scotia and easily pop into Halifax or over to Dartmouth for the day, it is also close to a good grocery store and some great restaurants. My favorite part of the house was actually the patio overlooking Purcell's Cove. I spent time on the patios everyday.
Hi Melanie, glad you had a great time. Thanks for the five star review!! We’ve already purchased a great new air-conditioning system and look forward to seeing you again in the future. Kind regards Brett
We thoroughly Enjoyed our stay at St Cecilia. She is OVERFLOWING with History and Interesting artifacts. The sun shining through the stained glass was breath taking! The living room area gave you a feeling of Royalty and the kitchen was very cozy and well stocked. Having access to a washer and dryer on-site was beyond convenient. The hosts Brett and Lara were Wonderful and readily available We would HIGHLY recommend staying here!
