My definition of peace...

  • 5 of 5

The only thing our family doesn’t enjoy about the River House is leaving it. We LOVE our annual family getaway! From our fish catching competition mornings, (67 last season, large, small mouth, rock bass, pike, catfish, you name it) kayak, canoeing, and tubing, afternoons - to our campfire stories and s’mores - this is our family recharge. And, then the children sleep…

Every year I think we’re going to take advantage of the not-too-far from the fabulous shopping and culture aspect the location provides. Yet; every year, we enjoy the peaceful retreat aspect - too much to wander. I actually see…the faces of my sons. My three sons don’t plug in their PS4! SERIOUSLY! Not that they can’t, WIFI is provided, but...they don’t. Maybe this year we’ll have a rainy day.

The first year – I overpacked. The cottage, (especially the kitchen) is so well appointed that I needed very little of my girl scout readiness. The hosts are exceptional - friendly and welcoming, but not intrusive. If sitting on that deck with a mug of coffee, (or a glass of wine) under the Mulberry tree, bird watching while listening to that beautiful river, doesn’t relax you…nothing will.

Nature lovers, Sport, Relaxation, Soul restoration, Family time, Culture, Sightseeing, Girls getaway, Adventure seekers, Romantic getaway. Honestly, I can't imagine to whom I wouldn't recommend this property.

Owner's Response: Thanks Lynne, Your review reflects our goals for the past 10 years that we have been sharing our beloved River House. It is always our hope that our guests find a clean and well managed riverside retreat, that they are able to relax and enjoy the peaceful setting and most importantly take with them memories that will give cause to want to return to our beloved River House. Every year we work on making improvements and making sure the River House is beautifully landscaped and well equipped. So glad you and your family have had such great experiences in your many visits! Your Hosts, Linda and Wally!

Great Location, but cabin can use a refresh

  • 4 of 5

The location of this home is only 20 minutes from Grand Rapids, yet you feel like you are away on your own private resort. It is fairly noticeable that the cabin is in use by guests year round as there are a lot of upgrades/repairs that could be made to the home. Though none of them are a necessity at the moment, I believe refurbishing the home would only add to the charm. I would still recommend coming to the River House for the peace, tranquility and fishing.

Helped me remember what I loved about Michigan

  • 5 of 5

I haven't been back to Michigan for over 40 years, so when we started looking for a place around Grand Rapids that we could stay I was happy to have found a house that seemed to fit our needs. After reading the description and reviews, we had a pretty clear idea of what to expect. We knew there was a busy road and that this was an older house, we didn't expect pin-dropping silence or a modern home.

Leading up to our arrival, we had great communication with Linda and Wally and it continued after our arrival. They were the the type of owners you want...there when you need them, invisible when you don't. The house met the approval of everyone in the family and we found it a great place to relax after the days activities. My favorite time was on the dock by the river in the early mornings, coffee in hand, listening to the water and wildlife.

If we go back, we will stay here without hesitation or reservation.

Enjoyed The Sound Of The River!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here during mid-October when the leaves were just starting to change. We were welcomed by the gas stove already going for some heat. Wally came over & chatted with my husband who was already down by the river. He hadn't wasted any time putting his fishing pole to use. They allowed us to bring our 2 dogs which was another plus. We enjoyed walking the property with our dogs & sitting down by the river listening to the sounds. We did a little bit of sightseeing to some nearby towns which we thoroughly enjoyed! The last day there Wally called to give us a heads up about a Bald Eagle he had just seen. My husband happened to be outside and was able to see it which was a nice treat. We found our stay there very peaceful & quiet and would definitely recommend it. Also, found the guest book a special treat to read! Thank you for sharing your home by the river!

BEST OF THE BEST

  • 5 of 5

This was our fourth or fifth stay at the Riverhouse. We HONEYMOONED here 3 years ago. So much fun kayaking, reading, bonfire and the dog.... Don't get me started. Our yellow lab ran and swam nonstop! 750 feet of the purest Michigan River! We swam every day and enjoyed the quiet seclusion. The house was impeccable and our host were, as always, super friendly! It will be your most amazing getaway ever!

Just "ok"

  • 2 of 5

Beautiful old historical home right on the river.

Gardens not as pictured, maintenance needed. Lawn was mowed twice on our stay.

Road is very close, just the other side of the split rail fence seen in picture and very loud.

Dogs should be leashed at all times.

Would not recommend if looking for peace and quiet.
