Wonderful vacation

  • 4 of 5

First those who've never been to the Lake Willoughby area, it's absolutely lovely. The lake itself is clear, clean and quite undeveloped, making it a perfect place to hear loons, hike and get away from it all. A few small towns in the area provide a few places for groceries, gift items, gas and a few pubs and restaurants but not much, which in my opinion is fine. Its surrounded by gorgeous country scenery, green mountains, farms, more lakes and wildlife. Dont miss the nearby blueberry farm! Gorgeous! A high point for us was all the locals we met were very friendly, low-key, and genuinely appreciative of our business. An example: a waitress at the Willoughby Inn who happens to also be a postal worker takes my postcards to mail at 6 am the next day so I don't have to drive out to a post office.

And now the cottage. First, the not-so-good. You must park at the bottom of a fairly short but extremely steep gravel driveway each time you come. When we arrived we were able to park a little higher up temporarily and were offered a cart for our luggage, but it seemed hardly worth it. We are around 60 years old and the daily hike wasn't too bad once we got used to it, but those who are older or have hip, knee or other problems might have difficulty.

My only other complaint was the closeness of the other cottages. One side of the cottage is wooded with no house but the other side has a cottage just a few yards away. A shade on their front deck and trees give visual privacy, but noise could be an issue. There are also two other places close but not overly so. While we were there they were all mostly uninhabited except for next door a few nights. I should say that even with small children they were quiet and very friendly. I believe they are family members of the owners and I don't think the place is inhabited frequently, but I do need to mention.

The cottage itself is fairly small and rustic but charming and more than adequate. The deck and screened in porch are the best features. There's a tiny TV, WiFi and a small wood burning stove, all the kitchen amenities including coffeemaker, microwave and all the necessary cooking utensils. The living room screams for a nice ceiling fan, but 2 small fans are provided and in general nights are reasonably cool and heat is not an issue in this area. The owner, Karen, is very nice and lives nearby if there are any issues.

All in all this cottage is not a bad deal. We loved our vacation and would stay again!

One of the best places on the Lake!!!

  • 5 of 5

While I have never stayed in this cottage, it was at one point was owned by a relative. The cottage next door is still family owned, and I get there every chance I get.

I love the views of the lake from this high point on the lake. With its secluded, hill top location you are not going to get people just walking or driving by!

You are going to be able to truly be able to kick back and relax!!!

*the only reason for the date is that it was required by the site, although I was at my family's camp next door with the 8/7/16 arrival date.

There is a lot of history on the "property" there are a total of 6 cottages on this hill that have a connection to American Civil War!

It is truly a place peaceful place.

Looking for a great general store check out Aldrich's in West Burke, reasonable prices and you can find most items you are going to need. Their steaks and chops are as good as if not better than any "major" grocery store!

Perfect Getaway!!!

  • 5 of 5

Nestled in the woods with a view of Lake Willoughby, this cabin is perfect in every way!! I have stayed here every year for many years and love the beauty and peacefulness!! The cabin is adorable and cozy. I love sitting on the deck in the sunshine and at night watching the stars. I can't imagine staying anywhere else!!!

Like sleeping in the treetops

  • 5 of 5

I've stayed in this camp several times over the past few years. It is always the perfect summer getaway. The place is always clean and comfortable, and it's a very short walk to the beach. It sits amid a cluster of adorable 1920s cabins, all linked by grassy paths, and yet all very private.

My top memories of staying in this camp are 1) Sleeping on the screened in porch, while watching Mars glow in the star-filled sky; 2) Taking the kayak down to the lake one morning to paddle around in the mist with the loons; 3) Enjoying sunset evenings with a glass of wine on the deck, overlooking the lake and mountains. With its views and proximity to the beach, it's an incredible value!

Peaceful, beautiful views, comfortable.

  • 5 of 5

In case you've never been to Lake Willoughby, it's the most beautiful part of Vermont, and one of my favorite places on earth.

I've been coming up to the Northeast Kingdom for about 40 years, and have camped out and stayed in a variety of cabins. Once we found this cottage we stopped looking and now book a week every summer. We'd stay longer if we could. It's a little above the lake, which we prefer because it's more secluded, but a very short walk from the north beach. It's also a short car or bicycle ride to some really spectacular hiking trails. In any case, the cabin is comfortable with an adequate kitchen and utensils, which is more than we can say for most cabins. There is enough room for a couple of guests downstairs, so we often have friends visit us there. We also have guests over for dinner either out on the porch or the deck. Karen and Bill are truly nice people, and once when I accidentally left a valuable musical instrument behind, they went through a lot of trouble to get in shipped back to me in a hurry. I really look forward to my vacations there. We'll be back again in July this year.
