Description

Victoria, Subd. B Farmhouse Rental Photos and Description

Four bedrooms, one bathroom, sleeps 6

Enjoy your holiday in the central location of Cape Dauphin at the base of Kelly's Mountain, in a very private old farmhouse. You will enjoy a view of the Bras D'or Lakes. The private beach and pond is about a 5 minute walk down the hill. If you like quiet, secluded and remote, then this place is for you. The farmhouse has lots of character, it is spacious and clean.

Restaurants and groceries: There are a few restaurants close by. The cottage is approximately a 15 min drive down a dirt road (excellent condition) to the Trans Canada Highway. There are two good restaurants 10 min from the TransCanada Highway.

Cedar House Family Restaurant and Bakery, do not go at meal times as there are long line ups.

Country Classic

The grocery store is 30 min drive to North Sydney or a 30 min drive to Baddeck.

Guestbook comments from the owner

The farmhouse is exceptionally clean and great for large groups or families. The reviewer in July was a couple and stayed 3 nights, our policy is to rent for minimum of 5 nights so the reviewers cost was for 5 night stay (although they booked three nights). They agreed to this price. Given this I believe they had extreme expectations. The reason we donot rent for shorter stays is because the farmhouse is large (2000 square feet) and the cost and time of turning it over between guests is too much.

The farmhouse is very economical for larger groups and provides lots of space, 4 separate bedrooms.

There is a washer available, yes it is old but it does work and families do appreciate using it. It is not advertised on the site. Given the bad review we may remove it.

The farmhouse has a lot of character (as advertised), it is 100 years old (not new!). Everything is in working order, it has been freshly painted throughout, there is a new bathroom, the windows are old but function and there are screens on the windows. The farmhouse is well maintained but if you are looking for new then this is not the place.

The pictures on the site give a good idea of the interior and the exterior. This property is very quiet and secluded, a place to get away from everything.

There is a private beach (5 min walk) and there is a private road which provides access so there is no intrusion on the landlords beach front property. This beach is very private!

We have rented for over 5 years and have great positive feedback from our renters. However, the first review on the site was in 2009. In our 2010 season we will encourage our renters to make comments on the site and you will see the positives of the farmhouse.

The property was absolutely beautiful!

  • 5 of 5

This charming old farm house is very clean and comfortable. Everything we needed to set up housekeeping was provided all we needed was food and drink. The view on a clear day is amazing. Our stay was very early in June, the apple trees and other blossoming trees were in full blossom and the Lilacs were ready to pop. Our weather wasn't perfect but it was nice enough. The owner, Richard was very accommodating and helpful. The weather was cool, so he brought us an additional heater to keep us cozy. We wanted to have a campfire but it was too cool to go down to the beach. Richard brought us fire wood and kindling and picked a spot on the lawn for us to have the fire. He also provided an extra large pot for us to boil lobster in and even pointed us in the right direction to obtain fresh lobster from the dock. We would stay here again and highly recommend it.

Very disappointed

  • 1 of 5

We were very disappointed as soon as we came up the long driveway. The property had overvrown rusted greenhouses quite an eyesore. At the front enterance there is a screen in sitting area that needs work. The furniture was old and musty with broken tables. The screen had holes some repaired by scotch tape. The washer machine was outside that was very dirty inside. Could not use it. When we entered the the first thing we noticed was how musty it smelled. Not pleasent. The furniture in the living room was very dated as well as musty. There was an outboard motor for a boat in the eating area , no need of that. Upstairs was better. Bathroom and bedrooms were clean and and comfortable. The TV had one very fuzzy channel so don't plan on watching that. The last comment will be about the mice. We have stayedalot of places on the island and never had to deal with mice. This to me is unacceptable for the money we paid. I would not recommend this place. Put the money you charge into the place to fix it up.

Summer vacation

  • 4 of 5

My family and I (2 adults, 4 children ages 7-16) stayed at this lovely farmhouse in the summer of 08. It is an old house, but kept up well and very enjoyable. The greenhouses in the back are overrun, but FILLED with raspberry bushes, which we picked every day for fresh berry pie and to put over our icecream. We enjoyed the walk down to the private beach, visiting it to find rocks and other treasures. The owners were pleasant and helpful, and my youngest daughter enjoyed playing with the children there.

This is a wonderful place to visit if you want a relaxing vacation, are willing to do a little work to entertain yourself and don't want to be surrounded by other families and all the noise and intrusion that goes with that. We go on vacation to relax and have quality family time and that is what you will get here. (Isabella says hi)

Not what we were expecting...disappointed.

  • 1 of 5

We expected a quaint farmhouse in good condition with the items listed in the description. When we arrived at the end of the long driveway, our first view was of the overgrown and rundown greenhouses and.outbuildings. We went to the front porch of the house and found the washing machine on a wood platform in front of the kitchen window (the ocean view window!). The washer was dirty/rusty inside and did not work. So much for doing the week's worth of laundry we were expecting to do at this place. All the screen doors (as well as the screen porch) were repaired with duct tape (which, itself, was peeling off). The barbeque was missing its propane tank (the owner took care of this quickly) and the grill was dirty and rusty - took an hour to clean it before we would use it. The kitchen was broken up into two rooms - the eating area with a electric stove and an oil stove. The other part of the kitchen was added on the the house and contained the fridge, counters and hot water heaters. The kitchen was well equipped, but the water heater was an eye-sore and had a collection of mouse traps on the top.

The bathroom was functional and clean. The bedrooms were roomy and clean. The linens were like new and the upstairs beds were very comfortable. Unfortunately, the closets were labeled "not for tenants use" so we had no where to hang our clothes.

In general, the inside of the house was clean, however, the windows and screens needed to be repaired/cleaned.

To access the "private beach" you needed to cut through the landlord's beachfront property which was at the end of the long driveway - we didn't do this, so never saw the beach. The ocean view could have used some more tree trimming/brushing (plus clean up the brush that has already been cut down).

When the landlord came the first evening to pick up the rest of the rent, we pointed out to her that we were very disappointed in the place given the condition of the place, the unusable washer and the price we were paying. She insisted that a washer was not in the description (it was) and that we should expect what we got, given it was an old farm house. She did, however, arrange to get the propane for the barbeque.

Final comments - not recommended - was disappointed based on the description and the price. The place needs some basic repairs prior to further renting, in our opinion.

Close by there is Bird Island boat tours, boat charters and whale watching. There is a world class golf course (Bell Buoy)in Baddeck (a 20 minute drive)and the Highlands National Park in Ingonish (60 minute drive). There are many hiking trails to explore all over the island.
