The house is on one level with panoramic views front and back. Humbert is a friendly village with lots of mixed working farms. Our house is situated in a particularly pretty part of the village, next to the stream the 'Brasse de Brosne', which gives the delightful tinkling sounds of flowing water. The large front & back gardens are securely fenced and comprise an extensive lawn, a children's swimming pool (upon demand for July and August) and swings plus a paddock further back. (see photos)

This has been our French family home for 25 years. During that time we have enjoyed it immensely and we want to share our experience to help you and your family have a good holiday in our property and the local region.
Victoria purchased this Cottage in 1988
Why Victoria chose Saint-Michel-sous-Bois
Humbert is on a small village situated in the pretty valley of the Bras de Bronne. In the winter the rainwater turns it into a small river but by May time it is a small stream and by June it has usually dried up. Humbert is on several walks recommended by the local tourist office. Therefore our house is in a beautiful rural setting. It is spacious, safe and secure. It has a microwave oven, washing machine, fridge/freezer and gas/elecrtic cooker. There is central heating as well as a 'feu de bois'. Free WiFi, UK and European TV (large DVD & Video collection) together with a good sound system and radio, table tennis and many indoor games.
What makes this Cottage unique
Cordonnerie Farm takes its name because it was not only a working farm but is also were the cobbler of the village worked. It was built before the French Revolution. Montreuil and its environs saw the birthplace of the revolution. Our predecessors probably took their part in this historic event. To this day, the French celebrate the revolution in a Son et Lumier at the Citadel in Montreuil at the beginning of August. The original house was extended into the barn during its modernisation. It has wooden beams throughout and therefore retains its 'farmhouse' character.

Plenty of space in a pastoral setting.
We very much enjoyed exploring the local area, and discovering hidden corners of the Sept Vallées. The views from the house are lovely, and we loved watching the birds and hearing their songs, seeing the farm animals and walking along the village roads. We appreciate that farm work can be noisy; however we feel we were perhaps unlucky in experiencing more than our fair share of tree cutting, evening hedge cutting, and an acrid fire which drove us out of the property on Saturday afternoon. At other times, the peace and quiet were wonderful. As for the house, it is relaxed and generally comfortable, but a little tired here and there. The living room lights have a mind of their own!
We booked this property at the last moment as we wanted to combine playing golf with finishing work projects without travelling too far from London. It worked out very well as the Wifi is fast and we had plenty of room for both of us to work between playing five excellent golf courses, including the iconic Le Touquet, which are within easy reach. The house itself is set in a quiet rural valley but is within 10 minutes drive of the pretty town of Montriuel Sur Mer. It was clean and warm and fully stocked with toilet rolls, tea, coffee etc. We went to several local restaurants, but also eat at home, after visiting the cheese shop in Montriuel which was fantastic. We bought fresh eggs and goats cheese from the farm in the next village, shellfish from Etaples and provisions from the markets in Hesdin and Le Touquet. As well as playing golf we enjoyed the Somme estuary and walks along Le Touquet beach. The owners were very straight forward, flexible and easy to deal with as we had to change our booking times a bit at the last minute. Next time we will take our nephew and nieces as the garden is huge.
The pictures on this site really don't do this cottage justice. Rustic and totally full of charm and character, it's a great size too with plenty of space and everything you need for a holiday. The garden is huge, with a herd of cows as neighbours (amazing). As Victoria has mentioned, you do need a car here, there's nothing nearby at all - just stunning farms, fields and greenery with scattered little clusters of houses (make sure you have plenty of petrol before heading out) - but we spent our days driving further out and found some really special places.
Being in the middle of the summer holidays, it was impossible to park in Le Touquet so we found a stunning beach, not much further away and with plenty of parking in Sainte Cecile-Plage. We visited the little chocolate factory, the Bagatelle theme park and lots of little towns and villages all over the place with stunning scenery. We really feel like we visited 'real France', the people were lovely and friendly all over and would highly recommend this place to anyone.
We were exhausted when we arrived so quite glad to just flop. My first impression didn't differ from the photographs. The valley is beautiful and quiet. The house was clean and tidy. It is like a smarty tube. There are no local shops so we were glad that we had shopped in Montreuil on the way. Montreuil is gorgeous. We ate at the Patio Hotel restaurant and had a very good meal. Loads to do. A bit quiet for older children but very relaxing. Yes I would recommend it to a friend.
The old farmhouses in this area are all long and one room deep. This simple design is because the animals used to live at one end and the people at the other. The location is rural and very relaxing. Most people in the valley turn in early and it's ideal for anyone who wants rural break near to beach and ot far from uk.
A good area for golf - Le Touquet is the closest, Belle Dune and Hardalot are not much further. The coast is within easy reach. There is a popular children's theme park called Bagatelle within 20 minutes. Some of the greatest battles in English History have been fought within 20 minutes drive. (Crecy, Agincourt, the Somme) There is some fantastic bird watching on the Somme estuary, beaches for walks or for children.
