About Eleanor Watts
We have been enjoying the Gables for 25 years and take great pleasure in meeting the folks who choose to make it their vacation home. Originally form Connecticut, we made the full time transition to Maine in 2012 and haven't looked back!
Eleanor Watts purchased this Cottage in 1991

Great location on the quiet side. Pleasant owners. However the cottage did not meet our expectations of size or quality of furnishings.
Good and bad
This was a nice property, receiving a bad review because of the pettiness of the owner, who lives next door. We arrived in a small 26’ RV, and the photos showed a very large driveway. The driveway however was so overgrown that parking was nearly impossible, and we broke a branch less than 1” in diameter in an overhanging tree, which could not be avoided due to the thorny overgrown hedging narrowing the driveway. The owner withheld half of our deposit, saying she was too old to trim this small break, which could have been trimmed with a pocketknife.
Didn’t know we were coming...
The property looks cute...from the outside. We showed up and it was a little rainy that evening. When we got there the property manager had no idea we were coming. She asked us to pull up the reservation for her and we did. She apologized and led us inside where she “swore” it was cleaned, as she stripped the dirty linens from the bed for us. It smelled musty and damp. The couch had white mold on the outside. I would have preferred to camp rather than stay in a musty cottage for a week with a 6 month old baby. We felt uncomfortable and were surprised that they did not even offer to clean the cottage after we unpacked. Seeing that it was Fourth of July week and nothing else would be available, we sucked it up, went to the grocery store and bought some bleach and cleaned what we could. All in all the cottage made it not an enjoyable experience and we were not impressed to have wasted our money and our first family vacation with the baby.
Cute and simple
We had a wonderful time exploring the area, and had a lovely place to return home to when our day was through. The cottage was simple and nice. We loved the porches and were able to let our kids roam around the front yard without having to stress about traffic. We will definitely book again in the future.
Quiet side of Acadia
The cottage was cute and homey. I had a little panic because I could not find the address but eventually located it in my email. I had never done Homeaway before so I didn't realize we didn't have to have the host let us in, which resulted in me calling them because I thought the door was locked. It wasn't. Once we got that all squared away, we settled in nicely. We could hear the harbor sounds because we had all the windows open to enjoy the wonderful breeze. The cottage was equipped with everything except toiletries (which I didn't expect). It is private and surrounded by roses and lupines. Great location!
Ok place, older damp cottage.
The cottage was just "ok". We arrived in the rain, and the rain was pourring down the fireplace in the living room. I figure this makes the place very damp and humid. We killed around 5 humidity bugs in the bathroom over two days. The smell when we got in was bad. I suggest a deep clean up of the cupboards and leaving air freshners. My morning cup of coffee smelled so bad, I had to rewash the cup a couple of times. New toilet and shower were good. TV upgrade would be nice, but cable channel selection was great. Having WIFI is nice. Matress could be upgraded, but we still had good nights of sleep. Location and views around was what we liked best. We didnt get to use the nice outdoor seating areas, too many mosquitos (June). Good seafood restaurant right next door (Ketch), and nice walk around the harbor. Nice village of Southwest Harbor close by for all your needs. But I leave this review, because we paid a steep price, and felt it wasnt really worth that. Although, the price on the island is steep everywhere. We enjoyed canoeing Long Pond Lake and our afternoon visit of Bar Harbor, beautiful...I would try to stay there if we return.
The Gables is located in the quiet fishing village of Bass Harbor and the attractions of Acadia National Park and Bar Harbor are close at hand. The Bass Harbor lighthouse is nearby and two short and extremely scenic Park walks are just a few minutes' drive away. There are tidal pools that youngsters can spend hours exploring.. A 20 minute drive takes you to the entrance of the Park where you can drive up Cadillac Mtn. take the Park Loop road or go for tea and popovers at the famous Jordan Pond House. Bar Harbor's shopping and restaurants await you and the Cottage is the perfect place to relax at the end of the day.
