Cute cottage, rustic, very quiet and serene
We stayed here four days in October. It was very peaceful and quiet, a great location for exploring the "quiet side" of Mt. Desert Island. We enjoyed walks along the shore road, and to the Seafood Ketch restaurant about 5 minutes away. The cottage is also walking distance (but a little longer) to the Bass Harbor Lighthouse. The owners are very friendly and gracious; they both came out of their house to greet us when we arrived. The issues with the shower mentioned in some previous reviews seem to have been fixed - the shower worked fine. The cottage had a musty smell when we arrived, but airing it out helped a lot.
A very cozy and clean cottage. Not much view of the water however. Convenient kitchen with all essentials. Used only the coffee maker however. Owner, Eleanor, was very welcoming and made us feel at home.
Peaceful cottage on the quiet side of the island
We enjoyed our long weekend in this cute cottage. The cottage was well equipped, clean and reasonably comfortable (I prefer a softer mattress). It had everything we needed including a whisk to make frosting for the cupcakes for my daughter's wedding! and towels even though they were not mentioned in the description. It has pleasant views from the windows in the main room and it was very quiet and peaceful. There are 2 decks but our use was limited as the mornings and evenings were misty. Communication with the owner was easy.
For those interested in gardens, I highly recommend Asticou gardens in Northeast Harbor - in the middle of September, it was a riot of color. All in all the cottage is a great place for a couple to stay.
Cozy very comfortable
Love the place, quiet, clean and what I was really looking for in a very charming Maine cottage. Mrs. Watts informed everything about the cottage. The only problem was figuring out the oven, I got it to work but still not sure what I did after pushing buttons several times. She had booklets on everything except oven and a binder with maps, restaurants which helped a lot. It has plenty of space for 2 to 4 people. I am a neat freak but everything was very nice and tidy.
Would definitely stay there again. Thank you Mr. and Mrs. Watts for a very nice vacation. sent pictures to friends and they all thought the place was very nice.
Great time in Mount Desert Island
We had a great time in MDI. The cottage was very cosy (especially after the hot water and shower issues were quickly fixed by Eleanor and Sandy) and it was a pleasure to go back to it every night after spending time exploring the island.
Very pretty property :)
It was a nice place! We had everything we needed! Our only complaint was that no water came out of the shower head, so we were limited to bathing every night. My husband is 6'5, so it was a bit difficult for him. But Overall great place to stay :) so cool and quiet!
The Gables is located in the quiet fishing village of Bass Harbor and the attractions of Acadia National Park and Bar Harbor are close at hand. The Bass Harbor lighthouse is nearby and two short and extremely scenic Park walks are just a few minutes' drive away. There are tidal pools that youngsters can spend hours exploring.. A 20 minute drive takes you to the entrance of the Park where you can drive up Cadillac Mtn. take the Park Loop road or go for tea and popovers at the famous Jordan Pond House. Bar Harbor's shopping and restaurants await you and the Cottage is the perfect place to relax at the end of the day.
