We are the Barton family. Spencer and I (April) both grew up in the Salt Lake area. We are currently stationed in Germany while my husband serves in the United States Army. We have enjoyed having a short term rental and have time and again seen how good and respectful people are. We are grateful for a wonderful property manager and family who have helped us keep the rental going while we are out of the country. Thankfully with their help and technology it has been a very good experience. Though we are far from home for now we still call Salt Lake City home and are excited to share our home with you.
April Barton purchased this studio in 2002
We love our studio for many reasons, but especially for how bright and cheery it is and it's fabulous location.
It was a nice inexpensive place for 2 people however we did have some issues during our stay. On arrival, we found that the place had not been cleaned from the last guest. The owner was not on site and did not know that the cleaning people did not clean. The bed sheets had hair on them, waste baskets were full, bathroom not cleaned and coffee grinds in the coffee maker. We contacted the owner and they sent their in-laws over to clean while we went out for a couple hours. Then after a couple days, i could tell something was not right with the heat. I checked the furnace located in the closet a few feet from my bed and found that the chimney was not connected. The flue gasses (Carbon monoxide) were going straight into the room. What is more scary is that the CO alarm was not functioning and the "service" light was flashing. We called the owner and they sent a HVAC company over to fix the pipe and add a working CO alarm. We did have to stay up and wait for them to arrive. Could have been a deadly situation. So to close, We suggested the the owner give us a partial refund for our troubles. They felt that $50 was enough of a refund to cover the trouble.......Not nearly enough in my eyes for the severity of the issues. I don't think this is the norm for this owner as they did seem nice and others have had positive stays here.
There's a few reasons why this is a “fair” rating and not “good”. First the positives: it was exactly in the area we like to stay, it was nice, newly renovated, clean and functional at an affordable price.
Here are the things that I was not happy about that ARE NOT DISCLOSED BY THE OWNER. First, her response time is almost unpractical to be a renter. We sent her a check and then never heard from her. I contacted her and it was days before she finally responded that she got my check. We were in the midst of locating another rental when she finally responded. This is not a good situation to be that out of touch with your renters. What if the door code wouldn't work, hot water heater wasnt working etc? You'd be packing up and going to a hotel with her response time.
There’s no thermostat to set the temperature in this rental. This rental is a basement below a home. The home is also rented and the thermostat for your room is in the home upstairs. You are at the mercy of whoever is renting the home above as to their climate liking. Thankfully, we were always comfortable, though it got stuffy a couple nights.
Same goes for the hot water. You are sharing hot water with the home upstairs. They ran it out of hot water one day.
The basement is separated by an obviously thin floor. You can hear every move of every person upstairs in the rental home. We had a new tenant arrive in at 2:30 AM one night and were awake the whole time they were unloading their car into the home. I dont think it is that they are being overly noisy, I think its just the way its constructed.
Lastly, there is no wifi even though its advertised. Maybe the house upstairs has it, but there's no wifi transmitter in the room and the home wifi, assuming it has it, does not reach to the basement. I feel it is unfair, at the least, for the owner not to disclose these details.
I cannot say enough good things about this super clean, well-appointed and affordable rental! My husband and I stayed here for a week while we skied at multiple nearby resorts. The location is great because you can easily get to any of the resorts within a short drive. Then at the end of the day you are back in close proximity to everything you could possibly need or want, restaurants everywhere, grocery stores (including Trader Joe’s & Whole Foods), movie theatre, shopping, and more. The unit was very cozy and perfect for two, especially if you want to stay in and cook some of your meals in (which we did on most days). The carpet was like brand new, and felt so good under our feet. Bathroom was a perfect size and also very clean. Big flat screen TV with a comfy couch was fabulous. Now usually when we travel, no matter how fancy the accommodations, we complain about the comfort of the bed, but not this time! We both were totally comfortable for our entire stay. And did I mention that this rental was so very affordable, leaving more of our money for the fun stuff we came to Utah to experience! And my review would not be complete if I didn’t mention the super nice owner April. She was always available to answer any of our questions, provide suggestions and in general always wanted to make sure we were happy, no matter what.
Although we did not rent the upper level, we did see the main level interior. If you have a larger groupand could use the additional sleeping space, or just want more room to lounge, it is also super nice and well appointed!
Thank you for everything April. We hope to visit Utah again and will be in touch with you if we return!
Appreciated this simple small studio. Clean and quiet. 4 blocks from a Trader Joe's. Very easy access to the freeway and then 1/2 hour to Alta/Snowbird. One small issue: the heat is forced air and is controlled from the upstairs unit. It got just a little warm for me, had to close all of the air vents, but it worked out.
We stayed here for 6 nights for our ski trip. The location is very convenient, close to the ski resorts, close to the shopping. Our two girls really like the place, it's very clean, and windows on three sides of this studio. We mostly cook our dinner here after skiing during the day, they even have salt and pepper, aluminum foil, plastic wrap there, and the slow cooker! The new pull-out sofa bed is very comfortable too. The owner is easily reachable by SMS text and responsive. The only thing my girls didn't like were the DVDs they had there were older than them, glad that I brought my own media player and movies:)
My husband and I recently stayed in the studio waiting for the birth of our first grandchildren. The studio was comfortable but I won't go into too much detail about it as the owner was planning on installing new carpet, a new sofa and mattress for the queen size bed. The studio will get just great with these upgrades. The location is fantastic; within a short walking distance of shopping and restaurants as well as 15- 20 minutes drive downtown and 20 minutes to the mountains. The owner was very welcoming, even bringing a gift for our new grandson. She got back to us promptly if we had questions. I would certainly stay there again and would recommend it to anyone else.
