About Jeff Jokela
Life long Ely recreational resident. Family bought property on White Iron Lake in 1962 and have been privileged to enjoy summers and winter vacations all the years since. No other place in the world I'd rather be. That said, have had a Illinois drivers license since I started driving, and have lived in Evanston Illinois the past 32 years. When am I moving to Ely? It's a process, I'm working on it.
Jeff Jokela purchased this Cabin in 1986
Why Jeff Jokela chose Ely
Started living on an island. Problem is the winter freeze and spring thaw, hard to operate at those times. When fate allowed this property came my way, it was unimproved, no road, no well, no buildings, but a sweet location with lake and Bear Island River frontage and plenty of acreage. Now that the infrastructure is all there life is good.
What makes this Cabin unique
Heritage Haus was built in the early 1920's by Finnish log builders hewn from tamarack logs fell on site. It was one of several cabins at Burley's Fish Camp Resort a mile or so up the shore. We dismantled, moved, and rebuilt it at the present location. As a youngster I remember getting minnows and night crawlers from the old bait house, and then a cold 7UP at the main lodge from Grandma Burley herself. Heritage Haus has served as a guest cabin for our Heritage Villa next door. It is my favorite place to stay.

The listing describes the cabin perfect. Bed was comfortable, showers were hot and good pressure, gas grill plus charcoal grill with charcoal provided, plenty of firewood to burn in the fireplace and fire pit, free access to a canoe and his motor boat (it was great to explore the river near by and the lake). There is a house on the property about 100' away but the owner was not staying there during our stay...so the feeling was still that we were all by ourselves. The 2 times that we did see the owner, it was a pleasure to talk with him.
I would recommend this cabin!
A slice out of time
Such a beautiful space! The pictures don’t do it justice. Such care put into the decorations and furnishings and some of the coziest nights we’ve had in a north woods vacation. Jeff was very generous with the use of his canoe and boat — exploring the lake was a daily adventure. Great experience, would definitely return.
Comfortable, charming cabin right off a lake! Very nice and cozy, Jeff was great and Hanzo was a cutie. A very nice stay!
Its fine if you enjoy mice, wasps and no privacy
If you're looking for a private get away this is not the place for you! The owner lives like 15 feet away. The owner was nice but very sexist, because we were women we obviously had no idea about anything so basically everything he said to us was extremely condescending. The first night we woke up to a mouse stuck and wiggling in a sticky trap on the counter which I proceeded to throw outside the cabin and then when we tried to go back to sleep we watched several other mice running across the kitchen counters and in and out of the garbage can. We had to lock all the food we brought in the fridge and sleep with the lights and radio on. The next morning we texted the owner and he came down and talked to me like I was an idiot saying "that's just part of nature. Why are girls afraid of mice? Do you know any guys that are afraid of mice?" He then put out more sticky traps and told us "you can either help yourselves or I can come do it for ya I guess" and we were told to grab trapped mice in a bag and bring them out to the woods. Also when there's poop on the counter to just wipe it into a paper towel. Umm... this is supposed to be my vacation, that's not my job. So we continued to have to sleep with the lights on our entire vacation. The second morning I woke up and walked into the bathroom and was stung in the side of my foot by a wasp. He told us there were wasps in a pine tree outside which is why there was wasp spray... that's funny because we ended up killing 10 wasps INSIDE the cabin. Im a very outdoorsy person and spend alot of time hunting, fishing, camping and just up north in general but that's just not right. We paid alot to stay 3 nights in a mice filled cabin, sleep with the lights on, get stung by wasps and ended up just leaving a day early because it had become ridiculous. The fishing wasn't great either.
So cozy and welcoming!!
