About Alison Mckenna

My husband and I are from the UK and have divided our time between UK and Ireland for 23 years now. I fell in love with this part of the world when we came for the first time touring through with our young and quite large family of 4 children (with no. 5 soon to follow!) who were treated so kindly by the Irish people. The welcome you receive here is tangible and the countryside is magical at any time of year.

Why Alison Mckenna chose Ballyscanlan

Because Blackberry and Primrose Cottage are on 1.5 acres there is a wonderful sense of space and oneness with nature. The views from all directions are of gently sloping, tree clad hills and from the south facing back is the magical woodland area on the edge of the forest. Both cottages create an instant sense of spaciousness with the open plan living area which brings the family together in every sense. The en suite bathrooms are a touch of luxury and offer privacy. We want to share our love of this area with you and invite you to stay in our lovely cottages, so come and see for yourself !

                                                            Peaceful and very enjoyable

                                                            alison N.

The cottage really is in the middle of nowhere so really peaceful (apart from native cows in field). The welcome pack was very welcome and generous. Also other "essentials" in the cottage which was really useful. Comfortable and good layout. I would encourage a stay here.

Our stay in Coolbawn area on Lough Derg, Co Tipp

                                                            Mary Q.

As two families we stayed in Primrose and Blackberry cottages to attend a local wedding on the lake. The cottages were very comfortable, clean and we got a lovely welcome from Rebecca + the fresh scones and blackberry jam!. The cottages are well laid out and all facilities needed to make our break so easy. They are in a beautiful rural part of North Tipperary but easy access to the lake for water activities and for a touring holiday. The two white donkeys were an extra bit of company and relaxation to our week-end break. I would be very happy to recommend these cottages for your break.

                                                            Owner's Response:

Thank you Mary for your very kind and positive review, your family were a pleasure to have as holiday guests and we hope to have more like you staying with us in the future ! We are glad you enjoyed the welcome pack, as we are 1/2 hour away from the main town of Nenagh a few essentials together with a couple of treats always seem to be appreciated by our guests.

Our part of Tipperary is a lovely area often overlooked, but as you say it is great for further exploration and for lake activites. Of course Nenagh has its own 18 hole golf course too if that is likely to be of interest in the future.

                                                            Kind Regards

                                                            Unbelievable experience

My second visit to this lovely cottage. An easy flight over from Liverpool and then arrived at the cottage within the hour. Blackberry Cottage is spacious and has everything you could need especially with the broadband facility. The garden has lovely views and there are plenty of great walks around the area. We camped out in Portumna one night and had a day in Terryglass by the lake. I hope to return soon.

                                                            Excellent accueil !

Situé au cœur de l'Irlande, il permet de pouvoir rayonner sur les plus grands sites irlandais.

Limerick city at just under 1 hours drive away is the historic home of King John's Castle which is a must see for anyone interested in the history of Ireland. There are regular guided tours, a video describing the history and a shop to purchase souvenirs and preserves. The added advantage of visiting the castle is that it is located conveniently to take a look at Limerick city itself and enjoy the variety of shops, restaurants and traditional pubs. Another historical experience is the Bunratty Folk Park just outside Limerick. The most complete medieval fortress in Ireland and where 19th century life is recreated. This is a great day out and one to include on the list. Galway city is just over an hour away and it is a very lively and vibrant city, famous for its music which is evident throughout ! There are some great shops, with specialities including Connemara woollen goods and celtic jewellery. Don't miss the regular artisan craft and food street market on Saturdays. There are many other places of interest more locally such as Terryglass, Portumna and Dromineer all of which are on the lake shore and many water sports are available from these with Portumna offering a wider range of facilities such as golf. There are many festivals and events throughout the year in this region ranging from horse racing and the oyster festival at Galway to the annual Terryglass arts festival. Dromineer hosts numerous yacht and boating events. There is a wealth of information available on the internet to get the most out of your holiday in Tipperary unless you simply want a peaceful retreat in the heart of the gorgeous countryside - the choice is yours !
