Amy purchased this cottage in 2005
My husband and I stayed at the Shelter with our two adult children, son-in-law and 2 grandchildren. The property was clean, well maintained and worked very well for us. Being located at the more southern end of the Outer Banks, there was less traffic and it had a less commercial feel to it than some of the properties further north. I would recommend having a car if you want to see things that are not within walking distance, however. We looked at the Hatteras Lighthouse, the Wright Brothers monument and lots of art galleries. We took the ferry to Orcacoke one day. Be prepared to wait in line if you do that. It was interesting to see the other island, however.
We ate in some and dined out some. The kitchen is well equipped if you want to cook. There are good restaurants with excellent seafood close by as well. We also enjoyed the outdoor shower!
I would recommend this property to families. Amy, the owner, was responsive to the questions I had. We had a fun stay.
We really enjoyed staying at the Shelter. We will definitely go back. The place is very clean and is decorated so cute. We loved the swings that you could hang on the deck. Amy was wonderful in answering my questions. I highly recommend staying at the Shelter!!!
THE SHELTER IS AN AWESOME COTTAGE... I CANNOT SAY ENOUGH ABOUT THE LOCATION, ACCOMMODATIONS, AMENITIES AND OWNERS. THE SHELTER HAS EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO HAVE A GREAT WEEK AT THE BEACH. WE WILL DEFINITELY BE BOOKING A WEEK AT THE SHELTER NEXT YEAR!!
The Shelter was terrific... Lots of touches that you don't usually find in a rental!!!
And the owner Amy was beyond accommodating.. The coffee maker was a little tricky but instead of just giving instructions... She bought us a new one for pick up at the local hardware store....
Our only downfall was the weather... Lots of rain and then the threat of the hurricane... We had to leave a few days early .. However, Amy called to check on us and OFFERED a refund or another stay when the weather was better... Incredible!!!! We will definitely return for more R&R... Teresa
The Shelter is a true beach cottage gem! This little piece of Hatteras heaven is perfect for a family ready to kickback, relax and enjoy the beach. 3 bedrooms and 2 full bathrooms, but why shower in the house when there is an outdoor shower?!!! Just a 2-3 minute walk to beach. Great deck up top that provides a 360 degree view! In addition, there is a screened porch and a covered porch. Restaurants and stores are across the street or just a short drive up Route 12. Fish cleaning table with a water hose are downstairs (we used this everyday to clean our catch)!
We stayed at The Shelter in 2014 and liked it so much we came back this year! It is everything it is billed to be. We love the southern end of the island and this is perfect for us! The proximity to the beach, shops, ferry all within a short walk. You MUST try the outdoor shower,,,incredible! Home owner is very accommodating and so easy to talk to. We are almost ready to book it for 2016!
