Bala Farm Cottage now has it's own website. Mina was born and raised in Italy, came to America in her 20s and fell in love with her husband, Chad. Two children and 3 states later, they've settled in West Chester, PA. Mina loves to travel and cook, with frequent returns to Italy, and enjoys meeting new friends. She is fluent in Italian and English and capably conversant in Spanish and French, so don't hesitate to communicate in the language you are most comfortable with!

Quaint and Charming Home Away from Home
Our trip to Bala Farm Cottage in West Chester was an idyllic getaway to celebrate my wife's birthday. The cottage was cozy, clean, and comfortably warm with the use of 2 space heaters (one on each floor), even on colder winter nights. In fact, the small heaters do such a good job of heating the cottage, that we had to turn the upstairs one off on one night. It was well-stocked with both real and disposable dinnerware and a corkscrew, as well as an assortment of necessities, including K-cups for the Keurig, various teabags, salt and pepper, and olive oil and vinegar. The cottage also included other amenities like bed linens, towels and washclothes, kitchen linens, paper products, and a few board games. The cottage itself is located within a development, but is quiet and secure, ensuring both privacy and safety.
The cottage is also centrally located to a number of attractions and amenities. Giant was a quick 20-minute round trip from the cottage and allowed us to stock up on a few grocery items for the long weekend. Wasabi, one of the restaurants recommended by Chad and Mina, is located in the same shopping complex (Bradford Plaza) and was excellent for later night dining during our first night. While in West Chester, we toured the 3 main du Pont estates in Wilmington (Nemours, Winterthur, and Hagley); each were within a 30-minute drive one-way of the cottage. Longwood Gardens was also a must-see and was a quick 15-minute drive away.
During the booking process, Mina did great at communicating with us and even let us know about a local event that was occurring in downtown West Chester during our first night. She also took the time to pop over mid-stay to personally greet us and ensure that we were both warm and comfortable, having everything we needed. Our stay was lovely and we highly recommend Bala Farm Cottage. We would definitely stay there again!
Thank you so much for the kind and thorough review, Eli! We'll look forward to your next stay in the cottage!
Warm, charming, special
Charming, quiet, comfortable with everything we needed.
I found this house to be very charming with a colonial feel. It was just the right space for me and my husband. The owners where very nice and accommodating. House was maintained and very clean. Bed was very soft. Perfect mattress. My only issue was linens for our stay. There was not accurate linens in the house. We actually went out and purchased towels and wash cloths because we where there for 6 days. But other than that I highly recommend it.
Peaceful location near great dining and famous gardens
The Bala Farm Cottage is ideally situated for a great weekend in West Chester. Just 3 miles to a couple dozen restaurants in beautiful downtown West Chester and 15 minutes to Longwood Gardens or Winterthur. The hosts Mina and Chad were great. Chad snagged me a beer from the fridge after a 5 hour drive and boy did it taste good. The cottage was stocked with coffee for the Keurig and some snacks. I spent a few hours reading in the Adirondack chairs next to the fire pit under the shade of 200 year old trees. Would I come back? You bet!
The cottage is only a 5 minute drive from the center of West Chester, and history abounds in the area. In fact, Bala Farm is located just off Birmingham Road, considered the "spine" of the Battle of Brandywine, and which British Troops marched down in September of 1777. Battlefield sites are just minutes away, as are multiple historic locations...some noted for their role in the battle, and others for their longevity and beauty.
If natural beauty is your cup of tea, then you've got plenty of options. The world-renowned Longwood Gardens is only a scenic 15 minute drive away, and highly recommended. You may also opt to venture further south towards Wilmington to visit some of the other gardens and estates established by the du Pont family. There are miles of hiking trails at the Stroud Nature Preserve (5 minutes away) and at various spots along the Brandywine River in addition to the battlefield sites. Ridley Creek State park is a little further away (20 minutes), but is another highly recommended option with even more miles of hiking trails. Or, just sit outside the cottage and enjoy the beautiful trees on the grounds!
If you're coming to West Chester to visit a student at the university, it's only 5 minutes away, and there are no shortage of establishments at which to feed hungry students. There are over 65 restaurants in the borough with enough variety to satisfy just about any request, and plenty of drinking establishments as well. We'll be happy to make some recommendations!
Further from West Chester, you can head east to enjoy the world class city of Philadelphia, or head west and venture through Amish farmlands. Again, the options are many!
