Verona Villa Rental Photos and Description

4 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, sleeps 8; for wine-tasting, sight-seeing, and walking

Perfect for a relaxing rural holiday, or as a base to explore the natural beauties and cultural riches of the Veneto. 'Il Castello' is situated on the spur of a vine-clad hill in Valpolicella, a famous wine-growing region of Italy. Our lovingly restored and attractively furnished 17th century farmhouse is only 20 minutes from Verona, one of Italy's most beautiful cities, with its famous opera festival in the Roman Arena, and about 40 minutes from the beaches and spectacular scenery of Lake Garda. It also offers ready access to the mountains and to the many historic and beautiful cities of the Veneto (Venice, Mantua, Vicenza, Ferrara, Padua etc). Opening onto a peaceful courtyard, the house has a large living/dining room, a well-equipped kitchen (with dishwasher), four double bedrooms, two bathrooms and a laundry room with washing machine and third WC. A wisteria-covered terrace, with stunning views of the mountains towards Lake Garda, provides a wonderful eating-out and sitting area.

Il Castello: The property is part of a large seventeenth-century farmhouse complex built around a shared courtyard. The main farmhouse, on the opposite side of the courtyard, is occupied by permanent Italian residents, including the owner's brother-in-law, Hugh Ward-Perkins and his Italian wife, Paola, who are both bilingual, and are always very ready to help with problems and queries.

The accommodation: The accommodation is in two parts, either side of the impressive entrance portico into the courtyard. The main part includes a large downstairs sitting/dining-room, and an attractive and well-appointed kitchen; upstairs is the main double bedroom, a bathroom tiled in local pink marble, and a second smaller bedroom with two beds.

The other part of the accommodation, the ‘Fienile’, is a converted hayloft. Upstairs, reached by an external staircase, is a double bedroom with spectacular views across the valley, and an attached shower-room with WC. Downstairs is another double bedroom/playroom, most suitable as a children's bedroom, with double doors opening onto the courtyard. Next to it is a laundry-room, with a washing machine, sink and WC.

It is possible for those staying in the Fienile to be reasonably autonomous, which makes it well-suited to having family or friends to stay. The division of the house also makes it pleasant to use in smaller numbers.

Outside Areas: There are two sitting-out areas with shade - one under a portico on the courtyard side; the other on the valley side under a pergola planted with wisteria, oleanders and a fig tree.

The courtyard is shared with the other owners, and provides a pleasant sitting-out area and a safe and sheltered play space for children, with an olive tree, fig tree, and the original large stone washing basins filled with running water from a stream which runs underneath the courtyard. There are chairs and a stone table for eating out on the terrace, as well as deck-chairs, and a barbecue.

Guestbook comments from the owner

I just wanted you to know we saw the caretaker with her adorable grandson this morning and she returned our deposit... We had a wonderful tour with Mario yesterday ... He and Anne were wonderful. We left the white and black cat there although I would have taken the white cat with me if I could!

Next time we will do a walking tour with Mario. The castle is beautiful and wonderfully appointed. The walking trails are beautiful. So thank you so very much.

We really got the flavor of the geography going up to the small vineyards. I loved seeing the cows, grassy fields and donkeys.

Beautiful villa in Valpolicella with stunning views between Verona & Lake Garda
average rating of 4.6666665 based on 19 reviews

The villa is located on top of a mountain with spectacular views. Many perfectly groomed vineyards dot the countryside. In Negrar, it is very convenient to Verona and Lake Garda. The villa itself with its great views, has an appearance of ancient construction with modern conveniences. You are able to walk many different roads from the villa, most are challenging but well worth the effort. The locals are very friendly and will go out of their way to help you.

All in all, a great experience and we would recommend Castello II highly.

Very nice place

Me and my colleagues spent 5 nights at the Castello while on business in the area. The place is very clean and well equipped, and the views are stunning. I recommend staying here.

Delightfully rustic cottage set amongst the hills with stunning views

  • 5 of 5

The property was exactly as described. Sitting majestically on top of a winding road it offered amazing views in every direction. Practically speaking the house was equipped with everything needed and the open fire was a real treat. Plenty of space and provisions for parking two cars made this an ideal base for exploring the surrounding area. The owner (Kate) was exceptionally helpful throughout and always contactable if/when needed.

What a wonderful place!

  • 5 of 5

We spent many hours searching for an Italian hide-a-way before settling on Kate Ward-Perkins' lovely 17th-18th century farm house - a converted castle. Our stay included the last two weeks of May and extended through the first two weeks of June. Nearby Negrar is a delightful village with a tinge of Austrian flavor, a winery just down the hill with Valpolicella for one Euro, just bring back the bottle! Our home away from home quickly became a home indeed. The rest of our family, with our two small granddaughters, joined us for the two weeks in June. The accommodations couldn't have been more spacious with sleeping and bathroom accommodations for the six of us. We had convenient access to the Internet and the rooms were cleaned weekly with fresh linens. Kate was very responsive to any request and a delight to work with. Ensconced on a hillside, surrounded by beauty.. we left with a tear in our eye.

A fantastic week!

  • 5 of 5

A lovely peaceful house set amongst beautiful countryside with great views. We ate all our meals outside under the vine on the terrace. Really relaxing - you could stroll into the local town with its market and restaurants, or through the woods up the hill, or drive easily into Verona. We thoroughly recommend it!

Il Castello is peacefully situated, about 1 kilometre above the small town of Negrar, near Verona, which has excellent specialist food shops (butcher, greengrocer, baker etc.), a weekly market, and a large supermarket close by. There are lots of fantastic restaurants and pizzerias in the area. Negrar is the centre of the famous Valpolicella wine-growing region, characterised by excellent wineries and romantic medieval churches, set against a backdrop of spectacular mountain scenery. Verona (about 20 minutes away), built on the banks of the River Adige, is one of Italy's most beautiful and civilised cities, with its Roman bridge and amphitheatre, world-famous Opera Festival in the Roman Arena di Verona, medieval castle, a host of wonderful churches, and stylish bars, restaurants and shops. Il Castello is perfectly located for access to Verona, the beaches of Lake Garda, and to Mantua, Vicenza and Venice, but its hillside location ensures tranquillity and a degree of cool in the heat of summer.

Other Activities: Arena di Verona's world-famous open air Opera Festival in the Roman Amphitheatre. Vinitaly (6-9 April 2014) - a major annual wine fair with exhibitors from all over the world. Personalised wine-tasting tours of small local vineyards; discover the delights of Amarone, Ripasso, & Recioto and buy direct from the dedicated individuals who make them. Eat in down-to-earth local trattorias or Michelin-starred restaurants. Soak up the atmosphere of some of Italy's least discovered but most beautiful medieval and Renaissance cities. Visit the villas of Palladio. Swim in the dramatic mountain scenery of Lake Garda. Let off steam at Gardaland Water Park.
