Il Castello - a romantic farmhouse in Valpolicella with fabulous mountain views

Space 2,152 sq. ft.
Property type villa
Minimum Stay 3 nights

About the property

4 bedroom, 2 bathroom for relaxing, wine-tasting, opera, Verona & Lake Garda

Perfect for a relaxing away-from-it-all holiday, or as a base to explore the natural beauties and cultural riches of the Veneto. 'Il Castello' is situated on the spur of a vine-clad hill in Valpolicella, a famous wine-growing region of Italy. Our lovingly restored and attractively furnished 17th century farmhouse is only 20 minutes from Verona, one of Italy's most beautiful cities, with its famous opera festival in the Roman Arena, and about 40 minutes from the beaches and spectacular scenery of Lake Garda. It also offers ready access to the mountains and to the many historic and beautiful cities of the Veneto (Venice, Mantua, Vicenza, Ferrara, Padua etc). Opening onto a peaceful courtyard, the house has a large living/dining room, a well-equipped kitchen (with dishwasher), four double bedrooms, two bathrooms and a laundry room with washing machine and third WC. A wisteria-covered terrace, with stunning views of the mountains towards Lake Garda, provides a wonderful eating-out and sitting area.

Il Castello is a large seventeenth-century farmhouse complex built around a shared courtyard. The main farmhouse, on the opposite side of the courtyard, is occupied by permanent Italian residents, including the owner's brother-in-law, Hugh Ward-Perkins and his Italian wife, Paola, who are both bilingual, and are always very ready to help with problems and queries.

Accommodation: The accommodation in our part of Il Castello is in two parts, either side of the impressive entrance portico into the courtyard. The main part includes a large downstairs sitting/dining-room, and an attractive and well-appointed kitchen; upstairs is the main double bedroom, a bathroom tiled in local pink marble, and a second smaller bedroom with two single beds.

The other part of the accommodation, the ‘Fienile’, is a converted hayloft. Upstairs, reached by an external staircase, is a double bedroom with spectacular views across the valley, and an attached shower-room with WC. Downstairs is another double/twin bedroom most suitable as a children's bedroom, with double doors opening onto the courtyard. Immediately next to it is a laundry-room, with a washing machine, basin and third WC, which provides a washroom for the occupants of the downstairs Fienile bedroom . It is possible for those staying in the Fienile to be reasonably autonomous, which makes it well-suited to having family or friends to stay. The division of the house also makes it pleasant to use in smaller numbers.

Outdoor Areas: There are two sitting-out areas with shade - one under a portico on the courtyard side; the other on the valley side under a pergola planted with wisteria, oleanders and a fig tree.

The courtyard is shared with the other owners, and provides a pleasant sitting-out area and a safe and sheltered play space for children, with an olive tree, fig tree, and the original large stone washing basins filled with running water from a stream which runs underneath the courtyard. On the other side of the house, there is a wonderful, wisteria-covered terrace overlooking the valley and the mountains towards Lake Garda. The terrace has a stone table and benches for eating out, as well as deck-chairs, and a Webber kettle barbecue.

Guestbook comments from the owner

I just wanted you to know we saw the caretaker with her adorable grandson this morning and she returned our deposit... We had a wonderful tour with Mario yesterday ... He and Anne were wonderful. We left the white and black cat there although I would have taken the white cat with me if I could!

Next time we will do a walking tour with Mario. The castle is beautiful and wonderfully appointed. The walking trails are beautiful. So thank you so very much.

We really got the flavor of the geography going up to the small vineyards. I loved seeing the cows, grassy fields and donkeys.

There are portable electric fans for all the rooms; the house has thick stone walls, traditional shutters and terracotta floors which help to keep the house cool in summer. There are 4 double bedrooms; two with double beds, one with twin beds, and the fourth (the downstairs fienile) which can be either a double or a twin. (PLEASE NOTE that the beds in the downstairs fienile are only 90 cm wide; this bedroom does not not connect directly with the WC next door, or with the upstairs fienile, which is accessed by an external staircase.) There are cats living in the other households which face onto the central courtyard. They are very friendly and are not allowed in our house (though some effort may be required to keep them out). Although not ideal for the infirm or disabled, the living-rooms and one bed-room are on the ground floor. The bathrooms are both up one flight of stairs; on the ground floor there is a toilet and sink in the laundry room. .

Memorable holiday

  • 5 of 5

Kate has done a wonderful job in making Il Castello like home from home. She had made considerations for all your needs, allowing us to become very comfortable very quickly. The house and location has real charm offering a great taste of rustic Italy, exactly what we had hoped to share with our family. This was our first trip away with our four month old son and we had everything we needed. Kate was a great host in answering any questions beforehand as well as contacting us to make sure everything was ok while we were there.

The central courtyard was a great place to relax, enjoy the sun, have a chat with Paola, watch the cats play, all in the peace and tranquility of the Valpolicella region. With the well equipped kitchen, we cooked most evenings taking the opportunity to enjoy the great local produce. We spent every evening on the wisteria covered terrace watching the sunset over the valley. During the day Il Castello was ideally placed to visit Verona as well as explore Lake Garda. The welcome book Kate provided had great recommendations on where to go, what to do and places to eat which was a great help.

We'd highly recommend taking a walk down the hill and ringing on Gianni's door for some wine. His Amarone was a real treat to enjoy with dinner on the terrace. We also bought a bottle of his olive oil to take home with us - delicious!

In short, our stay at Il Castello was one memorable holiday with a fantastic time had by all - highly recommended.

Owner's Response: Thank you Marianne for your lovely review. I am so pleased you had such a memorable holiday at Il Castello. It sounds like you got into the rhythm of the place and the surrounding area and made great use of the opportunity to live and eat Italian! That's what we love about Il Castello too - a chance to immerse ourselves in the sights, sounds, and tastes of Italy in a beautiful ancient house where you feel these things have been valued and enjoyed for hundreds of years!

A beautiful place to stay

  • 5 of 5

We had a thoroughly enjoyable week in Il Castello: we even got used to the narrow, winding road up to the house! It has a wonderful position high up on the hill side overlooking the town of Negrar: every way you looked there were magnificent views of vineyards and olive groves. It was so peaceful, with just the sound of church bells ringing in the town below, and it was really nice to be able to walk from the door either into town or up into the hills. The house itself was very comfortable and the kitchen was extremely well equipped with a wide range of pots and pans and lots of crockery. It was also useful to have a dish washer. The beds were comfy and there were extra covers if it got chilly. The house was ideal for trips to Lake Garda and also Verona. Negrar also had some very pleasant coffee shops and a lively Monday market. All in all a great location and a cosy, characterful home from home.

Romantic County House with Lovely Neighbors

  • 5 of 5

The Negrar house was a wine lover's dream, nestled in the middle of beautiful vineyards in Valpollochela wine country. Beautiful stone house inside and out. My husband had caught a stomach virus before we arrived and became quite ill. Our lovely and caring neighbors drove us to urgent care. We had set up a wine tour, but instead the wonderful people who we booked with met us at the hospital and interpreted for us the entire time we were there. They refused to take any payment for their time (even though they lost our business that day). Everyone checked in with us during our stay to make sure my husband was all right.

Beautiful house, lovely people, wonderful life's experience. We want to go back some day.

A Home with a View

  • 5 of 5

We were two couples who stayed at Il Castello for four nights in mid-May. The home was well equipped and was exactly as described by other guests.

Kate was responsive whenever I emailed her.

She also provided a very helpful "blue book" which contained many helpful suggestions.

The house is in a perfect location overlooking the valley of Negrar. It's a short drive to the center of town where there are several nice restaurants. The people in the community were very warm and friendly.

Il Castello is a charming home with pleasant surroundings, and I would highly recommend this home .

Il Castello is peacefully situated, about 1 kilometre above the small town of Negrar, near Verona, which has excellent specialist food shops (butcher, greengrocer, baker etc.), a weekly market, and a large supermarket close by. There are lots of fantastic restaurants and pizzerias in the area. Negrar is the centre of the famous Valpolicella wine-growing region, characterised by excellent wineries and romantic medieval churches, set against a backdrop of spectacular mountain scenery. Verona (about 20 minutes away), built on the banks of the River Adige, is one of Italy's most beautiful and civilised cities, with its Roman bridge and amphitheatre, world-famous Opera Festival in the Roman Arena di Verona, medieval castle, a host of wonderful churches, and stylish bars, restaurants and shops. Il Castello is perfectly located for access to Verona, the beaches of Lake Garda, and to Mantua, Vicenza and Venice, but its hillside location ensures tranquillity and a degree of cool in the heat of summer.

Other Activities: Arena di Verona's world-famous open air Opera Festival in the Roman Amphitheatre. Vinitaly (6-9 April 2014) - a major annual wine fair with exhibitors from all over the world. Personalised wine-tasting tours of small local vineyards; discover the delights of Amarone, Ripasso, & Recioto and buy direct from the dedicated individuals who make them. Eat in down-to-earth local trattorias or Michelin-starred restaurants. Soak up the atmosphere of some of Italy's least discovered but most beautiful medieval and Renaissance cities. Visit the villas of Palladio. Swim in the dramatic mountain scenery of Lake Garda. Let off steam at Gardaland Water Park.
