About Sally Mais

Our Tuscan adventure has included a year living at Montate when our youngest daughter was born in the local hospital. We have enjoyed restoring the property and sharing it with others has been extremely rewarding. We have rented it out from the moment we bought it - our first guests experienced it without the pool and still loved it! Over the years we've had families, honeymooners, long term visitors and even a film crew enjoying the house.

Sally Mais purchased this farmhouse in 2001

Why Sally Mais chose Lucca Area

We fell in love with the area whilst on holiday in Lucca in 2000 and set about looking for the right property. We decided to base our search around the wonderful hilltop town of Barga, which has so much to offer all year round. When we first saw Montate and marvelled at that incredible view, we knew there could be nowhere else that would match it for sheer beauty and tranquility.

What makes this farmhouse unique

The ever-changing, spectacular view is what our guests tend to rave about, as well as the privacy and seclusion. Some guests rarely move from the house, choosing to get supplies at the beginning of their stay and then not venturing far from the pool. Others choose a more active route and use the house as a base for local walks and day trips to the many varied and wonderful Tuscan towns nearby. The house has been decorated and furnished to a high standard and offers various places outdoors and indoors, to relax and enjoy the surroundings.

Magical place for a family holiday

  • 5 of 5

We had such a wonderful holiday at Montate - it was truly perfect for a young family. It has everything you will need (even a travel cot, high chair and potty for our 2year old... amazing home from home!) the views are out of this world, and you can totally switch off from the world if you chose. There's great internet and TV channels - but we barely touched them given the pool and ping pong table! We won't hesitate to recommend this place to anyone thinking of visiting Tuscany - it's just magical. We're already planning our next trip!

Wonderful stay at Montate

  • 5 of 5

A wonderfully peaceful place to stay with incredible views. The house is brilliantly equipped, and beds super comfy! Awesome pool area, with lovely purpose built shady patch ...

We thoroughly enjoyed it and would recommend it to anyone wanting a week or r&r in a beautiful part of Italy.

Comfort, quiet and a stunning hillside retreat.

  • 5 of 5

This was the second time we have stayed here and it was as wonderful as we had remembered. The winding and steep approach by road from the delghtful hill town of Barga is not for the faint hearted but so worth it when you get there. The house was clean, simply and tastefully decorated and well equipped with everything you need. There were plenty of areas were we could go to find some quiet so that although

there were seven of us it never felt crowded - though the pool was always a draw. Ideal for families with older/grown up children or a group of friends.

magical holiday

  • 5 of 5

Many thanks to Sally for a lovely clean house to stay in and excellent instruction and description. Everyone in the Lott family enjoyed it. lily age 7 learnt to swim and was in the pool everyday and she gave back by building fairy houses to protect the property! The house was just right for our family size, it was good to stock up at the supermarket and stay at the house for a few days walking locally or going up to the local restaurant at Renaio; but other days going further to Barga, Lucca, the devils bridge and caves. Lots to do, well equipped, spectacular views and we could have stayed longer (just watching the clouds!)If you go, go to Sommocolonia, the villagr across the valley and Ghivizanno the other side of Barga. We were new to rural Italy but hopefully will be back. If you need an extra night near Lucca the Villa Cheli is a must, dinner beneath the stars to end our holiday.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for such a glowing review. I hope that some of Lilly's fairy houses remain intact for all our guests to enjoy! It sounds like you had a good mix of relaxing by the pool with some local visits. Sommocolonia is a good tip, particularly for any historians as it played an extraordinary part in the Second World War. If you stand on the terrace viewpoint at the top of the town you can get a good view of the house with binoculars. Thanks for the tip about accommodation in Lucca as well. We'll pass that on to any guests who enquire. Always great to get new recommendations. We hope you come back again as a family to enjoy Montate in the future.

Stunning and tranquil location

  • 5 of 5

We have stayed at Montate 3 times now and hope to go back in the future. The location is remarkable and the peace and beauty of the place takes your breath away.

Lovely bathrooms and kitchen and various places to sit and eat outside, even if it rains.

The pool was sadly too cold for us but that was because the weather was very mixed this year compared to previous visits.

We had the best sleep ever because of the shutters and we used the TV and Internet quite a lot especially in the evenings.

We didn't venture out too much as we had everything we needed and it was difficult with a baby but local pizza at Renaio was fantastic.

Look forward to going back!

Owner's Response: Thanks so much for your lovely comments and we're glad you had a great time, despite the mixed weather. You'll be interested to hear we've now installed a pool heater so that guests will be able to swim even when the weather is cooler. We're so glad that you've enjoyed the house over the years - now with your baby. Here's to many more happy experiences for you at Montate in the future with friends and family. Best wishes, Sally and Andy

The local town of Barga has been voted as 'one of the most beautiful towns in Italy' and is frequently a 'must-see' in Tuscan guide books. This pretty, walled city has plenty of restaurants, bars, cafes and shops in addition to a renowned jazz and opera festival in the summer.

The walled city of Lucca is a 40 minute drive. Here both locals and tourists take to bikes to cycle round the walls of the city. Or go further afield for a day trip to Pisa or Florence.

The immediate area near the house offers spectacular views and mountain walks.
