Farmhouse with 4 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms, with astonishing mountain views
Our 4 bedroom, south facing Tuscan farmhouse offers breathtaking views of the Apuan Alps and the hilltop town of Sommocolonia. With no immediate neighbours, Montate is accessed via a 400m private road, ensuring complete privacy and tranquillity. There is a private pool, various outdoor eating areas and barbecue and a wonderful sun deck from where you can enjoy the views. Inside, facilities include: 4 bedrooms - 2 kingsize, 1 twin and 1 children's room with bunk beds. 2 bathrooms - one with shower, one shower/bath. Fully fitted kitchen/diner with dishwasher, oven and fridge. Washing machine and additional fridge/freezer. Sitting room with TV, satellite (UK channels available) DVD player and DVD library. WiFi access and Sonos music system. The outside chestnut house has been converted to offer additional living room/games room space with a music area upstairs.
The house is in a rural area which is a 20 minute drive to the nearest town so this would not be the best option for those looking to be at the centre of the action. Our website provides more information montate.co.uk

About Sally Mais
Our Tuscan adventure has included a year living at Montate when our youngest daughter was born in the local hospital. We have enjoyed restoring the property and sharing it with others has been extremely rewarding. We have rented it out from the moment we bought it - our first guests experienced it without the pool and still loved it! Over the years we've had families, honeymooners, long term visitors and even a film crew enjoying the house.
Sally Mais purchased this Farmhouse in 2001
Why Sally Mais chose Barga
We fell in love with the area whilst on holiday in Lucca in 2000 and set about looking for the right property. We decided to base our search around the wonderful hilltop town of Barga, which has so much to offer all year round. When we first saw Montate and marvelled at that incredible view, we knew there could be nowhere else that would match it for sheer beauty and tranquility.
What makes this Farmhouse unique
The ever-changing, spectacular view is what our guests tend to rave about, as well as the privacy and seclusion. Some guests rarely move from the house, choosing to get supplies at the beginning of their stay and then not venturing far from the pool. Others choose a more active route and use the house as a base for local walks and day trips to the many varied and wonderful Tuscan towns nearby. The house has been decorated and furnished to a high standard and offers various places outdoors and indoors, to relax and enjoy the surroundings.

Stunning location and a beautifully furnished house with nice bed linen and wine glasses
Lots of terrific lounging spots with comfy deep seats in sun and shade for enjoying every aspect . House very well kitted out from kitchen stuff to tea lights. Pool, garden and house lovingly tended by delightful Serena and her family. Terrific authentic local restaurant... we drove there along narrow ( .....exciting!) roads then walked back in the moonlight. Smashing spot for an Italian mountain holiday.... final stretch of road to the house requires a bit of concentration but it's well worth it!
Thank you Cath for your lovely review. We're so glad you had a relaxing time. We are indeed very lucky to have Serena and her family on hand looking after everything on site for us. Great that you enjoyed Franca's wonderful restaurant and a moonlight walk! We hope to see you back at Montate again one day.
Beautiful /great views / well equipped house / relaxing
We really enjoy the house! Inside it is lovely decorated and adapted to the style of the house. The location is great with awesome views. The garden was well maintained as well as the pool, which had also a nice temperature. Although to reach the village you need a drive for 20 minutes (lots of curves ) I would recommend this place!
Magical stay at beautiful Montate
First of all I would like to say that Sally had bern an absolutly fantastic host. The booking, the payment, or questions were all adressed very quick and she was extremely helpful to us. The information regarding the house and surroundings were spot on.
We were 2 familys, 4 adults and children from 7-12 years old, this was a perfect house for us. We were of course just amazed by the view upon arrival and then even more amazed by the beautiful house. It is so clear that this house is dearly loved by the owners and extremely well maintained. It is hard to find s house with this standard and spectacular location in Italy. We were just out one night in Barga, with good help from Sally, and just some daytrips. The property were so good that we had no need to venture out. We had wonderful breakfasts and dinners with all the Italian specialities; pasta, risotto, truffles, parmesan, parma ham, mozzarella and so on. We are in love with Montate and Italy and we will be back! Thanks again for all your help and hospitality.
Best regards Camilla, Tom, Hannah and Sivert Aasen. Anette, Kristian, Fredrikke and Jonathan Engebretsen. Norway.
Hi Camilla - thank you so much for your wonderful review. We're so glad you had such a lovely time and look forward to welcoming you all back one day. Best wishes. Sally
From the moment we set our eyes on this unbelievable house and its spectacular view (sorry, but let me say that one more time, the VIEW!), our jaws dropped!
Believe me, as amazing as the photos on the website are, they do not do it justice. It is absolutely breathtaking.
The house itself is full of character, and is equipped with absolutely everything a family with young kids might need. From every board game you could think of, satellite TV with live UK channels, and a DVD collection Blockbuster would be proud of. There’s even a piano and guitar should you fancy a Chianti fuelled sing-along whilst watching the Tuscan sunset!
A short drive down the idyllic mountain road (watch out for lazy dogs sunning themselves in the middle of the road!), Barga is a beautiful little town, with all the shops, restaurants, bars and gelatorias you’ll need. Make sure you drop into Ristorante L’Altana and have the strips of beef. The first time i’ve been in a restaurant when the waiter brought an extra portion by mistake, and i didn’t send it back!
The house is managed by a really friendly family that live just up the hill, who are on hand to solve any problems that might arise. At one point the boiler stopped working due to a local thunderstorm, and within half an hour there was somebody at the house fixing it, and this was at 11pm i might add!
All in all, a holiday none of us will ever forget. I could not recommend Montate enough!
Thank you so much, Simon, for this fabulous review. We are so thrilled that you fell in love with Montate. It is indeed very hard to convey that panorama in any kind of photo but you've done an excellent job in conveying just how great it is! We look forward to seeing you all at Montate again in the future.
Many thanks, Sally and Andy
Everything about the house was amazing! The view is unreal! The house is well equipped, beds were comfortable and the pool was refreshing.
Outstanding location for a relaxing vacation
We had a wonderful experience at the villa in Barga. The views are spectacular and everything was exactly as we expected. About a 20 minute drive down to the village which is great for a nice lunch or a few drinks in the afternoon. Would recommend to anyone looking to escape for a relaxing few days!!
We're so glad you had a relaxing break. Thank you very much for such a glowing review.
The local town of Barga has been voted as 'one of the most beautiful towns in Italy' and is frequently a 'must-see' in Tuscan guide books. This pretty, walled city has plenty of restaurants, bars, cafes and shops in addition to a renowned jazz and opera festival in the summer. The walled city of Lucca is a 40 minute drive. Here both locals and tourists take to bikes to cycle round the walls of the city. Or go further afield for a day trip to Pisa or Florence. The immediate area near the house offers spectacular views and mountain walks.
