Why Ashley McDonald chose Pahoa
After multiple trips to the Hawaiian Islands, I started to become particularly fond of both Kauai and the Big Island. It was a tough call but ultimately the energy, amazing geological sites, micro climates, and overall size of the island led me to choose Big Island. I looked at many homes but as soon as I walked into Oceanfront Place, I was blown away by the floor plan, materials, and quality of the build. Oceanfront homes take a real beating and this house was engineered to deal with that well. The location was also perfect for what we liked. Green side of the island but south of the heavy rain zone. Close to the black sand beaches and warming ponds. Close to the national park. Close to the best food on any of the islands (Kaleo's). Outside the touristy areas yet still close to Hilo if we want that experience.
What makes this House unique
Being on the ocean is amazing. So many sites, fresh cool air, and the wonderful sounds of the powerful sea! When my family and I are at Oceanfront place, we like to take walks through the neighborhood every evening. There is something very special about the time which follows the beautiful sunsets in Hawaii. We are on a dead end street at the far edge of the neighborhood. Imagine walking down the empty moonlit street. It is quite but there is ever-present sounds of the waves. The ocean acts as a big heatsink so the temperature always seems just right. Sandals, shorts and a t-shirt are just fine for our walks. No hustle and bussle of the city. Just you and your loved ones. This leads to a wonderful nights sleep being lulled by the sounds of the waves. Morning brings some of the most beautiful sunrises you will ever see. This is a great time to step out onto the back lanai and let the warm rays of light and cool ocean breezes sooth your soul. We keep occupied by spotting the turtles swimming through the crystal clear waves. After breakfast we usually like to head off to one of our favorite close by spots. This maybe the black sand beach, warming ponds, Coconut Island, or even the park at the end of our road. If we are feeling a little more active we will usually hit one of the waterfall hikes. For us, it's simple moments like these that are among the most memorable. We are so glad we bought where we did and were fortunate to find such a well built home. One day we plan on living full time at Oceanfront Place. Until then we want to share it with all.

Glass house on the rocks — AMAZING
Value for dollar this house was amazing. It’s mostly floor to ceiling glass windows and it sits on the rocks with the Pacific 20 feet away.
Waves crashing all night meant no need for my white noise machine.
The house is in need of some love but at this price, who cares! It’s a true treat for any ocean lover to stay here!!! The view is unreal, the house awesome, the beds were firm and the linens were clean & soft.
For the owner: there’s lots of big peeling paint patches inside, many windows that have broken pulls, a couple of rotting steps on the way up from the driveway & the fan/light in the kitchen didn’t work for us. We all loved your home — if you ever want to sell, please contact us!
Lovely house on the beach and near the lava flow of 2018 which we wanted to see. Great house, perfect for us.
Wonderful waterfront home
Stayed at the house over spring break with 2 teens. So spacious! Loved the master bedroom - wave sounds put me to bed every night. Great house for entertaining - hosted passover dinner for 9.
Thanks so much for being great guests!
Fantastic place to stay for a relaxing vacation!
I think this is the coolest place I've ever stayed. The pictures really don't do it justice! We stayed for a few days with our toddler and baby and it was the perfect way to end our vacation to the Big Island on a relaxing note.
The house and location can't be beat. The open floor plan provided a ton of room for the kids to play and roam around. The kitchen is large and well equipped. The two bedrooms are on opposite sides of the house, which is nice if you are staying with a group.
We and the kids spent way more time watching the ocean on the lanai than we thought we would, and we loved it! There was a high surf warning when we were there, and watching the massive waves come in and crash on the rocks was one of the main highlights of our trip. We also were able to spot sea turtles right in front of the house multiple times a day, and also saw whales (two different kinds, we think) at least twice a day. It was unreal and beat our expectations for seeing wildlife by a long shot!
Ashley was super helpful as well.
We couldn't recommend this location more and actually wish we had spent a few more days here instead of staying 7 days on the Kona side first! Stay here, you won't regret it.
Great House, Amazing Location, Suffering Lack of Maintenance
Ocean-front homes require constant repair and maintenance. Sadly this gorgeous home is not being maintained or cleaned in a manner that it deserves. Windows and doors are inoperative...many of the back windows no longer open and only half of the rear deck door opens, so you are left with one chair on the back deck unless you want to use a folding sport chair. Rust, rot and mildew are deteriorating the property. The entry steps are starting to show fatigue, weeds in the front courtyard are a foot tall. The abandoned home (broken windows, partial roof, no doors and stripped interior) next to the home may cause concern if you are sensitive to possible transient activity.
The master bedroom closet had a huge amount of dust and insects on the upper shelf. There were insects in the home and we were called the second night of our three night stay to tell us that they wanted to spray during the day while we were out...not something we wanted to deal with as I didn't know the person entering the property and I did not know the chemicals they would use.
The "smart home" features were ok at best-and the speaker in the master bedroom decided to go off on its own our first night in the home...not exactly comforting if you prefer privacy.
All light switches need to be marked as there were lights that we never succeeded turning on. The smart features tend to keep the house from being "dark" at night, so if you prefer a dark setting you may not be happy.
Also, be aware as with much of this part of the island, internet connection is not fast. I say this in case you have not experienced this side of the island before and you need a connection to work while you are away.
We have spent a number of summers on this side of the island-usually around Champagne Pond that is no longer there. This is an amazing substitute and a great location. I truly hope the owners will bring it back to what it appears to once have been.
We have corrected all items mentioned except the smart features still allow some night lighting. You were the first to comment on this as an issue. We really wish you would have reached out during your stay. We would have been happy to serve you or if unable to meet your demands issued a partial or full refund.
Amazing oceanfront home!
We loved our stay at this oceanfront home. The sound of the waves were amazing and the house was perfect we will definitely stay here again!
