Thank-you for visiting our listing : )
We purchased this property in 2006 and have enjoyed many repeat renters over the years. Unfortunately, our little cottage was damaged by Superstorm Sandy in 2012. In May of 2013 we tore the original house down and waited out the busy rental season to begin reconstruction. Since we were starting from scratch, we decided to max out the allowable increase in square footage and add a second floor. During the process, FEMA changed their guidelines and requirements for new properties and we were required to lift the new house much higher than originally anticipated. Basically, what was once a one floor home is now three stories high! We live in CT a little over an hour from Old Lyme. Paul, who has been a homebuilder professionally, oversaw the construction himself. We’re the first new waterfront construction home on the Old Lyme coast in over 50 years! It's been a long road but we think, and we hope you and your family will feel the same, that the results are worth it!
Laura Thomson Trinks purchased this house in 2006
We love the area because of the family atmosphere. Paul's son owns the cottage across the street and our grandchildren love coming here every Summer. We've been extremely fortunate in getting to know a lot of people who having been vacationing at Hawks Nest Beach for generations. Lastly we have, bar none, the best neighbors ever!
With the new house we added a 2nd full bathroom and increased the size of the kitchen. Additionally, we added 2 decks. Perhaps most remarkable is the upper deck outside of both upstairs bedrooms as the view of the water from this vantage point is better than we ever could have imagined.
This was our second year at this cottage and it was again a nice relaxing time. It's great to sit out on the deck or porch and enjoy the views and fresh air and with the deck and porch on almost the same level people can talk to each other no matter where you are. No need to bring chairs as there are plenty, so that helps with the packing. The house has nice air flow and cieling fans in every room which is nice. The table on the porch makes a great game or dining spot where you can still see the beach and feel the sea breeze. We loved it again this year and will go back again.
The home is in an older community of small homes and beach homes. It is new, clean, very-well thought out. Beautiful enclosed porch for meals looking out to the Sound. Kitchen is fully-stocked and great for cooking. Gorgeous beach with rocks at the edge but ten feet out is just pure sand. Southern view across the Sound to the north fork. Gorgeous outdoor decks with wicker furniture. Convenient upstairs laundry. Excellent use of lower floor (the house is on concrete stilts) for shower / storage. Window AC units kept us cool on a hot week no problem. Grill out back on lower level. Both upstairs bedrooms open to a lovely outdoor upper deck with great views. All new appliances. Owner ./ operator does a very nice job here.
We were impressed in all aspects - the private beachfront property coupled with the layout of the house makes this one of a kind. We stayed for a week with four children ages 13 to 4 months -- and while traveling with an infant can be daunting, it was actually the best vacation we have ever had! We loved that we could just enjoy the beach from morning until evening. The house is so welcoming and well equipped - all of our needs were met. We will return next year and are thankful to be able to rent this beautiful home. Thank you again Laura!!
The house is clean and well appointed with a stunning view. The owners are friendly, easy to work with and take great pride & care of the property. We would rent again!
My husband and I have rented a cottage in this location for many seasons.. It has always been delightful. Last year, however, we had the pleasure to rent the newly built cottage and it is spectacular. First, the location is the best. Your backyard is Long Island Sound! Then there is the vacation home. The living area is spacious, the kitchen is huge, good for the home or gourmet cook. The porch just out side the living area is a beautiful place for meals, while over looking the spectacular view of the Sound. The outside deck has the same wonderful view, and is a pleasant place to read, have a glass of wine, and just RELAX!
There are two bathrooms, one downstairs, with a convenient shower and a larger, well-appointed bath upstairs. There is a deck off the two bedrooms upstairs. Once again, the view is amazing and is a great place for your morning coffee or tea. This place is good for a couple (like us) or for family with children.
Old Lyme has nice restaurants, a museum, and good fishing, crabbing, and nature walks. It is convenient to Grocery Stores and Package Stores. But you do not need venture outside of this home and beach to have a GREAT vacation. I would recommend this vacation home to anyone looking for an exceptional vacation.
We had two rainy days, but the rest of the week was beautiful. Great place for a run, crabbing, kayaking, fishing and just floating around. Plenty of kids and activities for all ages. Our cottage was clean, and had everything we needed to get started for a great week. Owners very easy to work with. Did a lot of shopping in Old Saybrook, and the outlet Malls. Great Dinner at the Hideaway. Will definitely come back.
Dine at area restaurants, enjoy Old Lyme's numerous art galleries, go antiquing or visit a winery. Take a day trip to the Foxwoods or Mohegan Sun Casino or to Mystic Village, Seaport or Aquarium. Go on a sunset sail on a old-time schooner leaving from Mystic for a memorable evening. Take a hike a local park or play tennis at the court down the street. Walk to Sound View for freshly made donuts in the morning and gelato after dinner. Information can be found for these and other activities, attractions and restaurants in our in-cottage guidebook. Also, our cottage is located just down the street from the Hawk's Nest general store; great for that last minute item or souvenir.
Other Activities: kayaking, boating, crabbing off the jetties or the most popular....doing nothing : )

*****PLEASE NOTE: HomeAway, VRBO & Vacation Rentals.com have recently (Feb. 15th, 2016) added their own service charge to our rates. This money goes to these organizations and is NOT at the request of property owners. (We already pay a handsome fee to be listed on these web-sites) We feel terrible about this.
