My name is Marino in 1998 I began building in what I envisioned would become a family getaway set in the midst of a nearby pristine jungle. In 1999, I completed the first incarnation of Taninah. Over the course of four glorious years my family and I enjoyed Taninah as our private and secret retreat. During this time I continually added elements transforming Taninah into my version of paradise. In 2003, I decided to turn Taninah into the most unique vacation experience and exotic rental property in the Riviera Maya.
Marino Tomacelli purchased this villa in 1997
In 1997 I decided to look for property in Mexico's famed Riviera Maya near Playa del Carmen.
At the time, I lived in Playa and our initial intention was to buy a small parcel I could develop for a weekend home...a place I could go to escape to with my family from Playa del Carmen’s ever growing popularity and explosive growth.
In October of 1998, despite the fact there was no an access road, I started clearing the property. This meant hiking nearly two miles through dense jungle on narrow surveyor's paths while carrying whatever tools and supplies were required to get the job done.
Just eight months after the first underbrush was cleared, I finished the initial incarnation of our dream which included the Casa, basic landscaping and our original pool area.
Over the years (guided by the desire to create the perfect, most ideal place for my own family) I have continually made improvements and added elements to Taninah.
On the surface, I are certain that you and your family will enjoy our unique and exotic guest houses along with all the fun and exciting installations and amenities I've added; however, my deepest desire is that the natural beauty, peaceful atmosphere, and unforgettable ambiance of Taninah will revitalize your souls as it has my family's.
It is with great honor and pride we offer our private jungle retreat, our passion, our paradise to you and your family.
The Tomacelli Family
Taninah is truly incomparable, a singularly exceptional vacation experience you and your entire family will never forget.
What a marvelous jungle paradise – much fun was had by all – young and old! The zip line was a favorite! A fantastic place for our big and growing family to meet up and share time together. Impeccable service, terrific food, and lots to explore under a canopy of trees! We’ll never forget our time here! The Smiths
We rented this property out with our friends for our wedding week. We had the most amazing time. There was a lot to do on the property although it was not easy getting trips off the property which had to be planned in advance and were not always on time. I would suggest each party renting a car or van that would fit all their guests and that would make it much easier. The food was absolutely amazing and the staff was extremely helpful and courteous! We actually arranged our schedules not to miss one of the delicious meals! This was the trip of a lifetime and we certainly hope to return. Our love to all the guys and the animals!
We recently returned from Taninah where my wife and I spent a week with our five adult children, their spouses and 13 grandchildren (25 in all).
The common areas felt plenty spacious and it was so nice for each family to be able to retire to their own accommodations at the end of each wonderful evening spent at Taninah.
The padded play room, cenote, zip line and miniature golf course all saw plenty of use and made the parents' (and grandparents') jobs so much easier! We did venture out one day to the beach and another on a fishing expedition, but the best times of our vacation were times spent at Taninah. The cool water of the cenote was particularly pleasant.
Karl was eager to help with anything we needed and the Mayan staff was nothing short of incredible. It seemed that they would appear out of nowhere any time you needed or wanted anything and would make it happen. The meals were wonderful according to vegetarians and carnivores alike.
We will definitely return.
We stayed at Taninah for 7 days with 6 adults and 6 kids (ages 1 to 7). Everyone had a fabulous time! We went on one excursion to the Tulum ruins, another cenote and the beach, but otherwise we enjoyed all that Taninah has to offer (play structure, play room, zip line, trampoline, basketball court, game room, mini golf, pool, hot tub). And ... everyone's favorite, our very own private cenote with a water slide!! Adults and kids used the cenote almost every day. The staff at Taninah is so friendly and helpful and prepared amazing breakfast, lunch, afternoon snacks and dinner!! Yum! If you are thinking about booking at Taninah... do it!
Seventeen family members more than Enjoyed our jungle adventure. Taninah accommodated us even better than I expected. The surroundings were the most beautiful green and made for great pictures. The staff was fantastic!!! We loved eating together and not needing to cook or clean up. We added an afternoon snack of fresh made guacamole with chips. In our group there were some who originally wanted to be on the beach - But after experiencing Taninah - the beach wasn't missed at all. The swimming pool, hot tub and cenote, along with game room miniature golf basketball court and workout room made beach thoughts vanish. The teenagers and children loved the swimming pool and game room access into the late evening as the adults sat around the table enjoying conversation and could keep an eye on them. The staff was fantastic!!! They kept the place spotless. We wanted for nothing. We did one extra event at Sian Ka'an - which I would highly recommend. Our group ages were between one and sixty three. The added plus of limited Wi-Fi was great for us. All cellphones were collected by parents and not once were they mentioned or missed by the teenagers :). A few adults did slip off with their laptops and iPad for some Wi-Fi moments, but even the adults loved not being connected, unless by limited choosing. The recommended transportation service was put to the test with our group :). An iPad got left in Mexico when we departed, and was quickly found and arrangements were made by Marino and his contacts with the recommended transportation group and I'm happy to say the iPad is in the rightful owners possession :). The recommended transportation group was always on time. Did I mention the staff was fantastic!!! They kept everything clean and they were perfectly accessible when needed. Our group also played the undefeated staff in a game of volley ball and I'm sad to say that the staff remains undefeated :). We also opted for a piñata experience for the children of all ages in the group :). The family atmosphere was enhanced by the physical atmosphere. Before going to Taninah we had some family skeptics, after the Taninah experience we all LOVE Taninah and did not want to leave and have wonderful memories of our week experience. The staff is fantastic (I believe I may have mentioned that :) - They are made up of many years being part of Taninah and are perfect in their cooking, serving, cleaning, volleyball, interactions with the guests, and the list goes on and on.....
We chose Taninah for our wedding because it was so unique & private (how often do you get to rent an entire resort?!) We had a diverse group from grandparents to a 4 month old and in between with various comfort and budget levels. It was eco-luxury. Each cabana had a full bathroom with spa-like walk-in showers. Touring the place when we arrived was one delight after the other.
The staff was magic - invisible unless you needed anything. We would be hanging out & the mosquito nets were drawn, right next to me without me ever seeing them! I never caught them doing it although it was every night. But I never had trouble finding someone if I ever needed anything.
There are a few drawbacks - the biggest is not being directly on the beach and I was really worried about that because I *love* the beach. But, having your own private underground swimming grotto with water slide trumped the beach. Besides, we took a quick ride over to the beach two days- that was enough. The other drawback is that the food is served sort of family style - everyone gets essentially the same meal - in case you have any super finicky foodies. They were super accomodating about preferences - replacing seafood with chicken or even egg-less chocolate cake for the ones who didn't like eggs! Most of the food was very good and some was fantastic but if you're looking for every meal to be 5-star with adjectives on all your ingredients, you won't be happy. You do get to pick your menu (coconut shrimp was unbelievable). And daily fresh guacamole in the afternoon! Lastly, the resort is very eco-friendly. I actually loved this aspect but my convenience-trumps-all sis did notice some things, like the no resort-wide wifi (it was only at the main cabana) or composting toilet. I never noticed anything.
We chose Taninah as a splurge but it turned out to be very economical. Everyone stayed in their own spacious very private cabana, not a little hotel room. Anything we needed (including the alcohol), the staff got for us at Sam's Club or the grocery store, not resort prices. In the end, we spent much less (maybe half) than if we had gone to a typical resort (& we SEARCHED but never found one that met everyone's needs and budget). Taninah was the only one that was luxurious, economical, and convenient for families (no lugging gear when they move from trampoline to pool to playroom!).
Great place to bond - enough privacy to have your space but also spend time together.
GO! You won't regret it!
The Ledgard and Watts Families
From Seal Beach, CA
Wow! What a unique experience! No other vacation we’ve taken can compare. Taninah is a jungle paradise for vacationers looking for something off the beaten path and totally off the grid with no traffic, no TV's, no phones, no A/C and a lot of nature.
Here are some of our highlights:
*Playing in the cenote- snorkeling, sliding, exploring the very black hole, cooling off in the refreshing water, taking amazing photos.
*Zip-lining it never got old!
*Swimming: lounging on the raft and watching the bird activity in the tree canopy, very relaxing!
*Mini Golf: only play armed with off! Deep woods 25% DEET. Don’t settle for anything less potent or you will get feasted upon by always hungry mosquitoes.
*Game room: with fans on high we played many games of pool, ping pong, and air hokey. Loved teaching the Ledgards how to play Texas Hold Em under the palapa by the pool! I think they are ready for their first tournament!
*Going to the beach: We loved spending Fathers Day in the Xpu-Ha with cerveza service and beach umbrellas to rent… Beautiful white, powdery sand, and warm water. So clear and clean! We loved snorkeling with the turtles at Akumel and getting caught in a torrential downpour walking to our car.
*Sight seeing at Tulum: in awe of the ingenuity, longevity and beauty of this amazing place. The iguanas seemed to pose, for us and they were everywhere!
Listening to the jungle chorus each night and noticing the crescendo just before dawn and before it rained. We gave funny names to some of the sounds like the birds screeching “mom! mom!”, the martini shaker, the phone message alarm. One night an animal was resting through large leaves of a tall tree and causing the leaves to sway quite a bit, but we didn’t see that animal itself.
The Taninah staff was excellent and took care of our every need! From Karl, to Pancho, to Luis, to Leopold, To Juan Luis, to Sergio, and Gilberto- any others I missed, you are all top notch! We wish you could come home with us! Thank you for all the special, personal touches like climbing to get coconuts and showing us how you buried the pork for our dinner one night. Karl, you are a wealth of knowledge and full of great suggestions. Thanks for helping us coordinate or visits to the doctors, too. You made that process much easier to navigate.
