Andrew Appleby is well-known locally as the 'Harray Potter' and has lived and worked in Orkney for 35 years. Together with his Danish wife Sigrid, they run the Fursbreck Pottery. Andrew is a keen archeologist and very knowledgeable about the island and all things Neolithic. Sigrid ran an art gallery in Kirkwall and is very active in the busy local arts scene.
A wonderful peaceful and beautiful location and property. Perfect for creatives - writers, poets, Painters, musicians. In the heart of Neolithic Orkney and all of its inspirations. Every comfort is here to make this the perfect creative retreat. You will need and want to hire a car. Fabulous hosts!
A perfect place from which to explore Orkney. Centrally located between the two main towns, minutes away from most of the important Neolithic sights. A good butcher and supermarket within a five minute drive. And that is just its logistical advantages .
The house itself has plenty of room, excellent amenities, beautiful art work on every wall, full of light and peace.
Andrew is a wonderful host providing guests wth farm fresh eggs, and Orkney salmon , smoked to his own specifications and even showing up with fresh plaice for dinner. His lovely pottery lines the kitchen shelves providing for memorable meals. He is a font of knowledge about Orkney and a delight to speak to on any subject.
We found the property extremely well positioned for all the sites. Andrew was a perfect "host" and his property certainly carries his stamp on it. Very comfortable and the smoked salmon and freshly laid eggs in the fridge from the on-site chickens on our arrival were thoroughly enjoyed.
We would recommend the Smithfield Hotel in Dounby, a 5 minute car ride away. Food fabulous, especially the haddock and chips.
My daughters, their friends and I stayed in Andrew and Sigrid's lovely house for a week. It's a great position, ideal for anywhere on Orkney and ferries to the islands, and was really comfortable and spacious for five adults. We shall definitely be back in Orkney, which is such a magical place to visit that, even on my 3rd visit, there are so many interesting things left to do, and I shall certainly want to return to Fursbreck Pottery House another time. Andrew and Sigrid were very welcoming and keen to help. And even the weather and the light in Orkney is magical, with lovely long evenings in August...
We stayed here with our 4 children for a week, plenty of space and great facilities. A warm welcome from our hosts with smoked salmon and eggs in the fridge was a wonderful way to start our holiday. Orkney has so much to see that we didn't manage it all in a week and will definitely be back!
We had a fantastic stay at Andrew and Sigrids cottage. It is nice and warm. You have everything you need.
Orkney is an amazing place. We loved it so much that we are planning to go back next summer.
