Tucked away behind beautiful stone walls in the heart of the magical Somerset countryside, Mowbarton Barn is the perfect choice all year round. Surrounded by fields, and overlooking a vast stretch of the magnificent Somerset Levels, it’s also surprisingly accessible with plenty to do and see in the vicinity.

Mowbarton makes a brilliant venue for significant birthday celebrations and family get-togethers because despite the tranquillity, it’s handy for the M4/M5 and even Bristol airport. Not for nothing was Somerset once known as the heart of England...

We’re proud that so many of our guests return, often more than once a year. But it’s not surprising: there is so much to see and do in the area, and always some new delight to discover. Others prefer to stay in the spacious comfort of 'home’: a charming stone-built former barn with a lovely sheltered walled garden that is completely private and secluded - a sun trap that also offers cool shade in the green, vine-covered corners.

Staying in or going out, this spacious 4-bedroomed house makes a wonderful home from home. It sleeps eight, even nine, in comfort and has a large farmhouse kitchen with a big table for convivial dining, two separate, oak-beamed sitting rooms, one with log-burning stove, a study (with single sofa bed) and a magnificent sun room which many guests also use for dining.

The Barn is two miles from the delightful village of Wedmore (pubs, restaurants, butcher/farm shop, deli, fishmonger, chemist, gift shops, boutiques, hairdressers, beauticians, golf course...) and a short drive from:

* Wells with its beautiful Cathedral and Bishop's Palace

* Glastonbury - famous Tor, Abbey, Festival!

* Cheddar - Gorge, caves, wonderful walks on the Mendips

* Wookey - Hole and Witch!

There are also a number of nature reserves on the Levels below Mowbarton and the coast is just ten miles away; you can see it on a clear day. … In fact – all you could want is practically on your doorstep!

Somerset of course is famed for its festivals – not just Glastonbury! We have Wedmore Arts Festival, the Real Ale Festival, Wells Comedy Festival, Yeovilton Air Day, Wells Literary Festival. And Carnival fortnight in November, with Wassailing in January. Roger Wilkins hosts a popular Wassail evening, but if you miss that, you can still enjoy his world-famous cider barn when you visit. It's just a ten minute walk away.

Groups of 9+ can also book our beautiful Shepherd's Hut just across the lane which has recently celebrated its 2nd birthday. It sleeps two in fully fitted luxury and provides a secluded and romantic getaway with wonderful views - either for an extra pair in the Barn party, or for couples holidaying alone. Definitely an option to consider for wedding parties - and of course a Shepherd's Hut voucher makes a perfect gift at any time.

Mowbarton has something for everyone - families, family reunions, ramblers, cyclists (just off Route 33), historians, nature-lovers, bird-watchers, cheese connoisseurs, cider drinkers… It also makes a brilliant venue for a book club get-away, a bridge weekend, a yoga retreat, a Pilates group. We have a separate 'Milking Parlour' which is available for larger group events or gatherings although most people find the Barn itself is easily enough.

Mowbarton Barn is welcoming, cosy and comfortable. In the well-equipped kitchen there is a double sized range cooker as well as a microwave, dishwasher and large fridge/freezer.

Our bedrooms are named in honour of Mowbarton's past. There are two double-bedded rooms (Hayloft and The Byre); Hayloft has a king-sized bed and an en suite bathroom, The Byre shares the family bathroom and a view of the former dairy. Then there's a double with linked beds and en suite shower room (we call this room Tractor Shed), and a fourth bedroom with bunk beds (Pigsty!). The large family bathroom (with separate shower) enjoys sensational views. There is also a downstairs cloakroom plus a useful spacious utility room with washing machine and tumble dryer. Steps from the garden and between some rooms on the ground floor make it less suitable for wheelchair users or those with limited mobility. Safety gates are supplied if required for toddlers - for temporary installation by guests themselves.

Outside is a very pretty walled garden with barbecue area, terrace and a small lawn. There is also plenty of storage for bikes and parking area for up to six cars. Guests are also welcome to use our 'Teasel Meadow' across the lane which has even more brilliant views plus a picnic table and chairs - from where to enjoy them!

Bed linen and towels are provided; electricity and oil central heating is included. Free Wi-Fi. The Barn had solar panels installed in 2015, so we are proud of our eco credentials.

About Dorothy Wright

We bought Mowbarton, along with our own neighbouring property, as part of our move out of London. We love living in Somerset and are busy creating somewhere special for our grandchildren to visit. Our first grandchild was born in July 2013, since when another four have joined him!

Why Dorothy Wright chose Wedmore

It is close to family and friends, not too far from London and yet very much in the country. It is an area with a real community feel and one where families have worked on the land for generations. To make it even more special - we planted a vineyard on the property in May 2014 (see picture above) and also acquired a couple of extra acres. Viticulture is proving a time-consuming business but we are confident it will be worth it. Our first batch of 220 bottles of sparkling wine is currently in storage waiting to mature. The 2017 harvest has been safely gathered in and it promises to produce a brilliant vintage with some 1300 bottles of sparkling expected to be ready for sampling by 2020 at the latest (fingers crossed). Tasting holidays may well be on the cards in the not too distant future!

                                                          The house is fantastic and offered us the perfect place to catch up with friends - it's probably enough to say that we are going to reserve the house for the same weekend next year and a find a weekend in the summer too!

                                                          We stayed with 6 adults and 2 children for a long weekend in Feb 2018 and the property was fabulous. Very spacious with plenty of room for us all to relax, eat and sleep. Dorothy was on hand if we needed her and dropped in to check all was ok. The house has everything you need and more.

                                                          We were welcomed by fresh baked bread, chutney, milk, local butter and cheese which was fantastic and those little touches make a big difference.

                                                          We would definitely recommend Mowbarton Barn to anyone wanting to get away with family or friends. Local pubs were great as well and about 2 mile walk away.

                                                          The property was perfect for our family get together with lots of space for everyone and flexible sleeping accommodation.

                                                          We all enjoyed the evenings eating in the large kitchen and then by the wood burner in the lounge.

                                                          Wedmore is a short drive/walk away and offers all you would need in terms of shopping for your stay together with a range of pubs and eating options.

                                                          Another great feature of the location for us was the easy access to Bristol Airport and the London train at Castle Carey.

                                                          One downside for the younger members of our party was the erratic wifi access to the internet, but for others this was a blessing!

                                                          I stayed with my boyfriend and three of our friends over a weekend. We all loved the barn and wished we could stay longer. There are lots of nice walks around the barn and many attractions nearby accessed by car. Dorothy was excellent in providing everything we needed, we didn't have to ask for anything. I was so impressed by the size of the barn for the price we paid; definitely value for money. We will definitely be returning :) thank you!

                                                          A fine property for a group of friends or a family get-together. Lovely setting, deep in the countryside, down narrow lanes. We enjoyed having three bathrooms, two sitting rooms, the sun room and study - plenty of space for everyone. We had an excellent weekend and would happily stay there again.

                                                          The property overlooks the Somerset Levels and is equidistant from Wells and Glastonbury (you can see the Tor from one of the bedrooms), both of which are steeped in historical sights and folklore. Wedmore itself was once part of King Alfred's Royal Estate; he burnt the cakes just down the road! The property is also just 15 minutes drive from Cheddar Gorge and Wookey Hole. The area is famed for bird watching, with several nature reserves within ten minutes' drive. It is also very popular with cyclists and walkers. Ten miles away is the north Somerset coast (Burnham-on-Sea), with Exmoor not much further on. Longleat, Stonehenge and Bath are all approximately an hour's drive away
