Durrus House Rental Photos and Description

Mulroe Cove is a superb waterfront property and has a truly spectacular and uniquely private setting. It has its own private shingle beach which is only 5 metres from the house and spreads 0.5 km wide. It is a wonderful place to swim, kayak and fish or to stroll and relax on.

Due to its very sheltered position on the South side of the Dunmanus Bay, Mulroe is not only a superb seafront property, but is also set in 5 acres of mature gardens, which comprises a walled garden with Mediterranean and tropical plants as well as various areas of lawn with mature trees and a woodland with waterway. The woodland stretches over 0.5 miles from the house to the main road, thus lending the house a very private and tranquil setting.

At the far side of the beach the sea stretches into a beautiful wild marshland in which many different varieties of birds live and nest.

The house is a lovingly restored stone cottage set in the beautiful walled garden with wonderful sea views. It combines old with new, thus lending the house a timeless feel full of character.

The house consists of two separate rental units, the first, called 'Mulroe Studio' sleeps 2, the second, called 'Mulroe House' sleeps 4.

'Mulroe Studio' sleeps two. It has a spacious double height living/dining room with a characterful mix of antique and modern furniture and a twin bedroom on a mezzanine floor. It has a charming kitchen with an old dresser, table and a free-standing modern gas-cooker with electric oven and a stylish, contemporary bathroom with bath/shower. The seaviews from the kitchen, living room and bedroom are stunning.

It is possible to sleep a third person on the bedsofa in the living room.

'Mulroe House' sleeps four and has a comfy feel. It consists of a double and twin bedroom, a separate bathroom with bath/shower facilities, a cosy kitchen with dining area and a living room with a beautiful old stone fireplace and old corner cupboard. It is stylishly furnished with old and new furniture.

Both units can also be combined to make one large unit that sleeps 6.

The owners live in a separate house on the property.

Details for Mulroe Cove - The Boathouse, Fisherman's Lane Studio, Sleeps 4, 1 Bathroom

The Boathouse, Fisherman's Lane is an amazing waterfront property. As a former boathouse, it is built on the edge of the seashore, only meters from the high tide mark which at times gives the impression of being on a boat. A new wooden-framed larch-clad extension on stilts has been added to the existing and renovated stone-built boathouse.

The beautiful large scale windows give stunning views of the sea and of Mulroe Cove's unique and idyllic small harbour setting as well as of the surrounding landscape.

The Boathouse is furnished throughout with a lovely mix of both modern and antique furniture and has a seascape cottage Long Island style feel to it. It has a beautiful spacious kitchen/dining room with a lovely sitting area with stunning views of both the sea and landscape. The living room also overlooks the sea and leads to a lovely decking area for sitting outside. It has 2 double bedrooms, one of which has a seaview and the other a view over the stunning marshland landscape.

Beautiful boathouse - gorgeous views!

  • 5 of 5

My wife and 14 year old grand daughter spent a wonderful week here in July 2016. The property is clean and comfortable and the owner Stephanie is friendly and helpful. The views from the property are spectacular and we loved being able to get onto the beach and into the water within a minute of leaving the apartment. Stephanie helped us to hire a kayak for our granddaughter which she absolutely loved, and we found the water to be comfortable enough to swim in, which we did every day.

We found it necessary to hire a car and enjoyed the many small towns and sights that largely make up this part of the Wild Atlantic Way. The scenery is amazing, the people very friendly and we found no shortage of places to stock up on supplies, or to have lunch or afternoon tea. We always enjoyed returning to the boathouse where we had Dunmanus Bay to ourselves apart from a heron that visited daily. It is hard to put into words the peacefulness and calm of the area. Without doubt we would recommend it to others, and we hope to revisit ourselves before too long!

A great spot for family of four

  • 4 of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed our family stay at the boathouse for a week in May.

Its an ideal spot for messing around by the water, beachcombing, taking the odd cold dip and bird watching. We wanted a week of not doing too much and this was the perfect spot. The accommodation is super, the outdoors almost enters into every room so you really feel the fresh sea air. We didn't really see anyone while we were there and this suited us.

The Mizen head Peninsula is stunning for exploring and you can easily just spend the week in this one area. It's so nice, I really don't feel like telling too many friends how lovely it is. It's so unspoilt.

If you're arriving late in the dark, I would advise to take a look at the detailed directions as the roads are small and you can easily change route. The gateway could easily be missed too.

The property is clean and nicely furnished. We were hoping there might be a small welcome basket with bread, milk etc for the morning as we had quite a journey getting there and were too late to get to a supermarket as it was bank holiday too. That would have been a nice touch as we've experienced that before.

An idyllic place to stay and unwind

  • 5 of 5

The view from the Boathouse must rank as one of the most beautiful in this part of Ireland with the light bouncing off the sea and the sound of waves lapping against the foreshore just a foot or so from the house. There are so many journeys you can take from this cove that are less than 30 minutes away. The drive through Ahakista reminded me of a visit to the Oracle of Delphi in Greece and if you really like heights the Healy Pass is an absolute must. The Boathouse was very well maintained and is a bright clean space. It does have its quirks: the shower is a trickle compared to the one at home, make sure you bring or buy soap and do a bit of research about where you get travel to to shopping and cash but these are small things. By the way Bantry (the nearest large town) is a place food and to stock up on Euros. The nearby small village of Durrus does have a sizeable shop and is surprisingly well stocked. All in all, a beautiful place to stay, unwind and think of possibilities.

Keep it secret

  • 5 of 5

I am reluctant to write this review because I was hoping to keep Mulroe Cove a secret. It really is the most magical place and The Boathouse is a light-filled treat. Waking up every morning to the sound of water lapping on the beach below the window and, further out, a view of the boats bobbing about in the water was a happy start to every day. This was my second trip to the Cove and I have already booked a third because twice would never be enough. Stephanie is warm and helpful and it's impossible not to make friends with Toby, the dog. The house itself has everything you need for a relaxing holiday, including some lovely outside space to take advantage of any West Cork sun that might appear (it does, you know!). A car is necessary, especially if you want to explore the stunning scenery in the area. All in all, I can't recommend Mulroe Cove highly enough. But please don't tell anyone.

Mulroe Cove - a great retreat!

  • 5 of 5

Mulroe Cove is really a lovely retreat!

Within our two weeks stay we enjoyed not only the picturesque landscape but also the friendliness and amiability of the host!

The house is situated directly at the water and well equipped. We stayed in the Boathouse from which you have a beautiful view over the cove.

Thank you for a really great holiday experience!

Mulroe is only a short drive away from the Mizen peninsula's sandy beaches, including the beautiful Blue Flag beach of Barley Cove. It is also within easy reach of the Sheep's Head peninsula with its many scenic walkways.

The small, lively village of Durrus is only 4 km away and there you find a grocery shop, several pubs and restaurants and a Cafe with WiFi facilities, a post office and a general hardware store that sells all you need for the beach and fishing equipment.

Mulroe is equidistant from the historic seaside towns of Bantry and Schull, approximately 13 km away. Bantry is a lively town and has more pubs and restaurants, a lovely Farmer's Market on Fridays and a large supermarket that offers online deliveries. At the end of June it hosts the Chamber Music Festival and at the beginning of July the Bantry Literary Festival.

The picturesque seaside town of Schull is famous for its harbour and hosts the famous Fastnet Sailing Race.

We are in easy reach of Bantry House, Mizen Head Lighthouse, Glengariff Bamboo Park, Ewe Sculpture Garden and Glengariff Nature Reserve, Barley Lake and Garnish Island, then onto Beara Peninsula as well as Schull, Cape Clear or Sherkin Island and onto Skibbereen and Lough Hyne.

Activities in the area include: swimming, kayaking, fishing, sailing, surfing, boat trips, scuba diving, horse riding, whale watching, cinema and Spa, walking/ hill walking, beaches and golf.
