Many famous artists have lived in, or visited these studios including Fernand Léger, Jean Cocteau, Arbus, Bernt Silva, the poet Khalil Gibran. Our studio (atelier No. 9), was the atelier and home of the painter and sculptor Louis Bresson (1896-1983) whose works are celebrated in a museum in his hometown of Rosieres in the Ardeche.
0ur atelier/studio is in the middle of ' Montparnasse '
Many famous artists lived or frequented Montparnasse and its famous cafes (“La Coupole, “La Closerie des Lilas', 'Le Select')
Pablo Picasso, Guillaume Apollinaire, Rousseau, Marc Chagall, Fernand Léger, Max Jacob, Blaise Cendrars, Modigliani, Ezra Pound, Marcel Duchamp, Juan Gris, Tsuguharu Fujita, Alberto Giacometti, Andre Breton, Salvador Dali, Jean- Paul Sartre, Henry Miller, Django Reinhardt, Joan Miró, Edgar Degas.
Writers, too, favored the neighborhood; Hemingway, Miller and Fitzgerald…
Montparnasse has always attracted people from around the world who have come to live and work in this creative and bohemian atmosphere, even including some of history’s well-known political exiles such as Lenin and Leon Trotsky.
Today’s Montparnasse is one of the largest leisure areas of Paris, with a great choice of shops, cafes, cinemas, theatres and restaurants.
Near our atelier you’ll find the Montparnasse, Falguieres and Duroc Metro stations which give you access to three different subway lines. You are also close to many bus lines and taxi stations.
The Palace of Versailles is easily reached from the Montparnasse train station.
From Montparnasse you can walk to the Luxembourg Gardens, the Boulevard Saint Germain and the Eiffel Tower...
I appreciated many things about this wonderful, unusual studio: first, being greeted warmly by Maria, the owner, who led me through the details and made me feel right at home. The space - charming, in a quiet courtyard, 19th century outside and re-vitalized inside to make the most of the airy two levels. The photographs do it justice. Everything has been thought through. The design is restful. I loved and appreciated the cleanliness, the utterly comfortable bed with good linens, the fact that everything WORKED -- from excellent shower to lamps to even the ease of using the keys. The kitchen comes with all the tools and dishes one could want; it's a restful atmosphere, in a safe and very convenient neighborhood. Another plus: Montparnasse is a real neighborhood, not a touristy area, and the transportation is first rate. No need to take a taxi from CDG -- the modestly priced Les Cars of Air France drop you off at the Gare two blocks away. You can also easily walk to Saint Germain, and, a bit farther but still an easy walk, to the Jardin du Luxembourg. Easy, too, a couple of blocks away, to buy food at Monoprix, which has a whole floor of everything you could ever want. It's a small space, and just fine for one person or a couple who don't need vast space. (How would it be in hot weather? I don't know if you can open the big high 19th century windows.) Because it's in a second interior courtyard, you don't hear street noises; and the neighbors were quiet too. When it turned out that there was - loud - construction going on next door, Maria was very apologetic, and - much appreciated - offered to reduce the fee; she thought they were to have completed it before I arrived. It's an unusual experience. If you're drawn to the photographs, you should appreciate it.
This was my fourth trip to Paris and I would have to say is the most unique and memorable having the opportunity to stay in this beautiful well appointed apartment.
Perfect size for two people! Has everything one needs while staying in Paris along with the Monparnasse - Bienvenue Metro station being two blocks away. We took the Air France bus directly from Charles De Gauile to Gare Montparnasse for 18 euros and walked approximately 5-10 min to the apartment. On our return back to Charles De Gauile we took the metro/RER for 10 euros. Whether you take the AirFrance Bus or the rail both take approximately 1hr.
The owners , Maria & Heinz were prompt with their reply's and care taker Julia was lovely. Julia could speak about as much English as I knew French but I had no problems getting my questions answered. Also close to grocery store's, many bistros, & cafes.
I might suggest to download the "Paris Metro" app which will allow you to plan your route on the Paris Metro the night before when you have wifi , take a snap shot of the route (which is now in your photos) and you have a simplified route of where you want to go.
I highly recommend this apartment!
In mid- June 2015, we spent five nights in this charming locale, a hidden gem in Montparnasse (5 mins walk to either of 2 metro stops). This 19th century artist's studio has been beautifully updated with all the mod cons without sacrificing any of the original stucture and character. It was pristinely clean, the bed comfortable, good shower head.
The owner provided Nespresso cups for the machine, a thoughtful gesture. The inner courtyard is very quiet, full of trees and beautiful flowers.
The concierge, Mme da Silva was most helpful and answered our questions (we speak French) about shopping and use of the metro system. There is a convenience store next door (great for seasonal strawberries and bubbly water), half a block down on rue Vaugirard there is a grocery store with all that you would need food wise. The owners were quick to respond when we had a few questions about the apartment.
I want to be fair. The owners didn't get back to us very quickly when emails were sent. When we arrived the bed was not made. The instructions for the TV were not clear and there were no instructions about how to run the washing machine/dryer. The helpful property manager only spoke french. Our son was with us the first week so we were ok, but when he left it was difficult to communicate. It is in a premium location. You can walk about anywhere, Montparnasse Train station is so close as well as the metro. Stores in abundance and close. A huge Monoprix was close for Americans who want to shop and get a huge variety and large sizes and a Carrfore Express was close by as well. It was clean but very small. It is perfect for 2 and a squeeze for 3, but really if you are not there much it works.
We stayed for 1 month (June) in this beautiful atelier. The apartment itself is well appointed- absolutely everything you need is inside. The flat is very small- feels like a converted artist's studio but perfect for 2. In Paris who spends a lot of time inside the apartment anyway? Charming furnishings and setting. The neighborhood is also wonderful- very close to major subway lines (less than 5 min walk), 10-15 min walk to Luxemborg Gardens and Latin Quarter. We walked to Notre Dame and the river in about 20 min, strolling pace. Khalil Gibran stayed in this building- there's a plaque right outside the door! Groceries, cafes, bistros, bread store, cheese shop, all steps away. The owners were great to deal with- prompt, responsive and our deposit was returned right away. Another advantage: take the Air France bus directly from CDG airport to Gare Montparnasse and walk 10 min to the flat- no need for train or cab. Please note there is no air conditioning, but the unit is on the ground floor and the upper floor/loft has huge windows you can open for breeze and ventilation. There also are floor fans. The heat was not a problem at all, but I wanted to mention this for those who might be sensitive. I highly recommend this apartment!
The apartment is located in Montparnasse, very central and lively. Very well connected by bus, metro and trains. (11 minutes, Chateaux de Versailles!)10 minute walk from Saint Germain des Pres!
