Despite looking small on the outside, the cottage is very spacious, with enough room to hold my party of 7 without us feeling like we were constantly on top of each other. The detached queen/ bunk bed room really helped add to the privacy we each had. The house was very clean when we arrived, and check-in was effortless and self-mediated. The canoe was definitely an added bonus as Mary Lake is quite gorgeous and secluded, so it's perfect for exploring without being interrupted by other boaters. The owner Craig ensured that there were more than enough paddles, as well as life-jackets. The area is very quiet, and we felt very safe during our stay. The house itself is a bit out in the open, but this wasn't too bothersome as the area containing the fire pit was partially shielded by the cottage, so we didn't feel too exposed when we chose to relax outside. The dock is beautiful, and very accessible with a staircase leading down the hill to the water. We did share it with another family who was renting, but there was enough space for both of us to dock our canoes during the day, as well as relax and enjoy the scenery.
Craig was very thorough in the information he gave us about the cottage, and even included helpful tidbits like detailed directions to the cottage off of highway 11, and local amenities and places of interest with their addresses. He was always very prompt in answering any questions we had, and I definitely appreciated his transparency in informing me about precautions he had taken after recent high water levels in the area, such as changing the water filters.
Overall the cottage and renter provided us with an amazing experience! Being first time cottagers we didn't really know what to expect, but I can soundly say that this experience definitely gave us a great standard to hold any future experiences to. Thanks Craig!
Thank you so much for your review. I am glad you had a positive experience, as that is what we hope to provide everyone who stays at our cottage! Thanks again, and you are welcome to visit anytime in the future.
Quaint, comfortable, clean cottage - nice area for hiking
This cottage is quite sweet and comfortable, and the access to water (across a small, quiet road) is convenient. Craig was responsive and very helpful. The view of the lake from the cottage was almost non-existent which was disappointing, but it's just a hop, skip and jump to the dock so we didn't mind. We had the shared dock all to ourselves (it was weekday after all), and Mary Lake is so pretty. Bring your own towels and linens (I missed that in the description). The fire-pit is awesome, so don't forget firewood! There is a nice walk up the hill to a lookout point, and Mary Lake is a close drive to Huntsville hiking trails. You'll love it here!
Beautiful cottage...bad location
The cottage itself is adorable, clean, has everything you need...however the location wasn’t ideal. There’s no privacy and has other cottages surrounding it in every direction you look. I live on 30 acres and felt that I have more privacy in my own home and backyard. The dock is beautiful, but it’s a public dock. During my stay, the cottage next door had about 10 drunk teenagers that completely took over the dock every day I was there, so I never got to enjoy the dock or the water...which was the whole point of me renting the cottage.
Clean, quiet and very relaxing
Even though there was a little bit of construction ( no fault of the owner of this cottage ) it was only for 2 mornings and after that it was perfectly quiet ( I believe most of the outside construction across the street is now done ). The view of the sunrise over the lake in the morning was unforgettable. The owner supplies a canoe ( with life jackets in the cottage ) and it was fabulous getting out on the lake. The owner of the cottage is extremely accommodating and really helpful about suggestions as to things to do in the area. Huntsville is only a 15 min drive away and has everything you could possibly need. The cottage itself is really quaint and nice. The beds are comfortable and there’s ceiling fans in every room to keep you cool. At night the mosquitoes ( or as I call them the Canadian Air Force ) are really prevalent, make sure you bring bug spray. The kitchen has a nice setup and the bbq is a huge plus. The tv has tons of channels and the wifi is somewhat decent ( you’re in the woods and it’s satellite so what can you expect ). There are windows everywhere so you get views from every room. Didn’t get to see any deer unfortunately but I think that’s probably because there was a black bear in the area ( but he never came near the cottages ). I’d like to personally thank Reuben ( the owner ) for allowing us to stay at his cottage, I’d definitely recommend you stay here if you’re looking for peace and quiet and a chance to be one with nature. Thanks again Reuben. Look forward to seeing you again.
Thank you very much for your review. It was a pleasure hosting you at my cottage. I would also like to thank you for your understanding of the noise that occurred during your stay - all the outside construction is done, and unfortunately they drilled the well while you were there.
Again, thanks and I look forward to welcoming you back to my cottage next year
We had a fantastic weekend!
We loved the rustic cozy feel of the cottage, and the beautiful fall scenery could not be beat. Will defiantly be staying again.
It is a nice little getaway place.
Reuben was very responsive and kind.
We enjoyed our stay.
