We, Hazel and Peter, are finally living the dream. We bought this place in 2001 with a view to living here permanently and developing the Grenier into somewhere we can share with others. Both of us have roots in the British countryside and chose here because the living experience reminds us of life in the UK of 50 years ago - apart from the prices !!
Hazel Thompson purchased this apartment in 2001
Every year for 10 years our annual holidays were always spent here making sure we experienced every month - we were never disappointed. September remains my favourite after the often savage heat of August. The air seems to breathe a sigh of relief but the pool is still very welcoming. Everyone who visits comments how peaceful and tranquil our house sits in the countryside.
We never tire of our view onto the Pyrenees, sometimes the mountains seem to rise from the next field or of the buzzards and kites hovering overhead. Having a Restaurant and Boulangerie in the village was the icing on the cake. The Restaurant was totally overhauled by its owner and re-opened June 2015 under new management. Open every weekday and Sunday lunch for 'menu de jour' and evenings at weekends. They also have a Wine bar where you can enjoy a glass or a bottle and a plate of Tapas
Knowing the value and importance of breaks aways from work we have endeavoured to make Lavender Loft a home from home with a touch of luxury. Feedback from our guests so far, has proved we have been successful
The apartment is very clean and very well equipped from the luxury bathroom to the kitchen to the garden. It is nicely situated within driving distance to Lourdes, Auch and the Pyrenees. The Madiran and St Mont wine areas are worth visiting and for foodies, the local markets are a must.
Hazel and Peter are very considerate and generous hosts, the welcome pack and welcome meal were appreciated as were their homemade chutneys. They kindly offered to drive us to and from a restaurant 12kms away so we did not have to worry about drinking and driving. We even went home with produce from their garden!
Lavender Loft at Viozan is a lovely place to spend your holiday. Situated in the beautiful and quiet Gers, close enough to the Pyrenees and at an acceptable distance from Auch, Toulouse, and Pau, there are lots of interesting places and sites to visit.
The house is nicely located, there is a nice, big garden and the swimming pool is delightful at the hot South-French summer days.
In the loft you can find everything you need - and even more -, the luxury bathroom is very comfortable and the kitchen very well equipped.
Hazel and Peter are ideal, modest, generous and friendly hosts, the 'Welcome Pack' is a lovely surprise, as is the delicious diner that is prepared when you arrive after a long travel.
We will certainly recommend Lavender Loft at our family and friends!
This wonderful “gite” is an exceptional place to stay. It is very clean, well decorated and has more than you can ask for with great amenities in the kitchen, bath and bedroom. The attention to detail was amazing. Hazel and Peter are not only warm and friendly but extremely considerate of your privacy as well. The welcome package was very much appreciated and you must not miss the opportunity to have one of Hazels home cooked meals. She ran a catering company before she “retired” to the country and we experienced one of the best meals we had on our visit to this region. We are American and rent out a home in another region of France. We do know what travelers enjoy and this charming place more than exceeds the average travelers expectations. If swimming, cycling and hiking are not your thing no worries, the location is central to both the Pyrenees and the charming villages to the North. We enjoyed exploring it all. Our final night was a great “feast” at a local farm for dinner. Highly recommended. If peace and quiet, experiencing the “real” countryside of France and relaxing along the way are a part of your vacation ideal. Then this home is a special Oasis for all. I can not say enough of about our wonderful stay here.
We have just returned from our stay at Lavender Loft. What an amazing place. The loft was beautiful - it was spotlessly clean, beautifully furnished and supplied with absolutely everything you could possibly need. The huge comfortable bed and enormous shower made life very luxurious.
The welcome pack was brilliant and meant we could just relax the first day and not have to even think about shopping.
Hazel and Peter could not have made us feel more welcome and were the perfect hosts - friendly, helpful and a pleasure to stay with. The pool was the icing on the cake at the end of each day. The gardens and terrace were delightful and we spent many happy evenings reading or playing Scrabble outside until it was too dark to see what we were doing!
We loved having the bikes whenever we wanted them and there were plenty of well signed cycle routes in and around the surrounding villages.
This is rural France at its best - there was a market every day of the week if you wanted it and so many beautiful, sleepy medieval towns and villages to explore. Eating out was a joy - almost every small town had an excellent restaurant and of course this is duck country so we were spoilt for choice.
We would not hesitate to recommend Lavender Loft to anyone who is seeking a relaxing holiday in fabulous accommodation in a beautiful part of France.
Great place to enjoy an idyllic pastoral scene.Peter and Hazel are excellent friendly hosts. The place is very well equipped for all sorts of cooking. We had food and wine waiting for us,so,no need to go shopping right away.We recovered from jet lag in a spacious comfortable bed.We loved this place..
International music festivals - Mirande, July (Country), Marciac, Jul / Aug (Jazz), Vic Fezensac. July (Latino) and Tarbes, Aug (Arg. Tango)
Bird watching reserve - Lac de Puydarrieux, cross-section of 2 migratory routes - best visited during the winter months for greatest number of species
Tour de France always passes close by in July
Enjoy a different market every day of the week in the numerous Bastide towns that abound locally. Some have night markets with artisanal stalls, live music and outdoor food during the summer months. The Spanish border and the Pyrenees are only an hour away where you can enjoy both Winter and Summer activities and all year round hydrotherapy / thalassotherapy spas at Saint Lary Soulan and Loudenvielle
TV Commentator during the Tour de France described the area as the most beautiful in France. Gascony is the only Department in France with no Motorways, enjoys clean fresh air and the inhabitants enjoy an average life expectancy of 94 years!!. The fields and skies abound with colour and wildlife. Expect to see buzzards and kites searching for lunch on thermals over the sunflowers, deer and occasionally wild boar
Gascony is home to the 3/4 Musketeers, Auch (the Department's capital) boasts a statue of D'Artagnan on the steps to the 15thC St Mary's Cathedral; with its Choir of over 1600 beautifully oak carved characters, it is a major site on the route to Santiago de Compostela. The square outside the Cathedral has been transformed into a beautiful and relaxing fountained area for taking a drink and watching the world go by.
You are never far away from a local village Fete during Summer and Autumn. Often from Friday to Sunday, you can join in at Petanque, skittles or even beret tossing. Follow this up in the evening with a Grillade or Paella or other freshly prepared outdoor food accompanied by live music
The area is home to Armagnac and the famous Madiran wine area - visit and taste at beautiful Chateaux such as at Plaimont. If you are not familiar with these wines they are well worth a try and are starting to win International awards
For the more energetic, we have information on the local area's 13 routed walks of varying distances - these can also be cycled. Roads have very little traffic and so are relatively safe for the cyclist. Close by are numerous swimming lakes with 'beach' areas and water parks. Mirande has the closest opportunity to go kayaking and Auch has a 'Go Ape' style course.
As we have heating in all areas (included in the rental prices) our Apartment is ideally suited for off season breaks, skiing holidays and property hunting trips all year round
