Why Rebecca Broche, the owner and group events counselor (not an agent). chose South Lake Tahoe

We thought families, church groups, business school and club retreats needed a great place to gather together that was affordable, beautiful, big and designed for them. We had never been able to find a place like that for our family reunions. IT WORKS!

Family Reunion

  • 2 of 5

I just returned from a family reunion at the Mountain Home, which my in-laws rented out for the week. The good thing I can say is that this place sleeps a lot of people. The bad thing(s) is that it needs some maintenance. All those futons are nice for sleeping but not that comfortable for sitting. The projector to the big screen is crooked. The hot tub was empty. The dishwashers were iffy. The showers were too hot, too cold, not enough water, or wouldn't shut off. A bunch of the doors won't shut right or lock, including some bedroom doors. It was kind of ramshackle, which would be fine if it was priced that way, but it's not. So the value is bad.

But the worst part is that the bunkbeds don't have rails. One of the little kids on the trip fell out while sleeping and broke his collarbone. Stuff like pillows was aligned on the edge of the bed to try to prevent this, but nonetheless he fell and had to go to the ER. It sucked.

Wouldn't come back here unless the price was way less.

Owner's Response: As the owner of Mountain Home, I am very sorry this guest had issues with our property. Needless to say, since this is the 1st negative review on Homeaway I'm aware of in over 2 decades of operation, it's an extremely unusual response. Some of the issues are just a matter of personal preference i.e., the seating comfort of the futons. Others, based on my conversation with the person who booked the property are not true or are distorted i.e., empty hot tub which the contact person for the group said she had no idea about this complaint. The hot tub was great and definitely not empty. In addition, we have an on call 24 hour operations manager with whom guests are instructed by contract and at check in to contact with any problems. The dishwasher issue was because of a part gone missing that we were unaware of. This did not affect its function and could have easily been taken care of by our manager as could the very slightly angle picture on the home theater. Both my manager and the guests confirmed he was never called. The locks on the doors have been deliberately disabled for the protection of our guests, especially children. Now, in regard to the child falling out of the top bunk, which of course I am truly sorry about, this is a puzzlement. These beds are advertised and shown on our video as adult sized bunkbeds without rails. The person who booked the property confirmed she asked everyone in her group to watch the video. With all the available sleeping options including floor mats and roll aways, it is surprising to me that a parent would put their child in a situation they didn’t feel comfortable with i.e., stuffing pillows on the edge of the bunk. We assume reasonable care will be taken by our guests. Finally about value: perhaps the person writing the review is not familiar with Tahoe. The only comment we consistently get from thousands of our guests is what spectacular value our properties are and how pleased they are with the clear level of care we show for our properties and our guests.

Best Family Reunion Yet

  • 5 of 5

My family of 42 stayed at the Mountain Home recently in June 2010. The property was especially geared for a group of our size or larger. Mountain Home's floorplan is set up ideally with bedrooms in blocks, so we could put family groups in the appropriate areas (such as those with babies away from the pool table/hot tub areas)

The location of Mountain Home was convenient to hiking, biking, the lake and activities we took part in including the Renaissance Fair, Miniature Golf, shopping. And speaking of shopping it was located less than one mile from a grocery store, drug store and coffee house, so if we ever needed any item it was just a 15 minute roundtrip back to Mountain Home. Even though the property is located near shopping it is also on the route up towards Emerald Bay and had the woodsy feel.

The property was clean and organized. We used only the beds available in the bedrooms and did not need to use the futons in the common areas, but they were especially nice to relax in and maybe catch a wink or two while watching a movie. The website photos of Mountain Home were very accurate and we we only surprised by the large size of the rooms and property.

Mountain Home has all the amenities to provide entertainment at their location. We played volleyball, badminton, horseshoes, kayaking and pool as provided for as well as lots of use in the hot tub. The owners provided 2 firepits for us to use on the patio in the evenings as well as 2 BBQs. There was an abundance of seating available both inside and out.

We only encountered one issue with a broken washing machine which was handled almost immediately by the maintenance person Efrain. We can't speak more highly than of the service we received from Rebecca and Efrain. If there was anything that came up or we needed they were there in no time and or called back immediately.

We would definitely recommend this property for any other groups, whether you are a family or not. Everyone in the family agreed this was the best reunion yet and the best part was we got to spend a lot of time together and didn't have to leave the property to find things to do.

We look forward to returning in 2012.
