About the property

3 Bedroom 2 Bathrooms With Stunning Ocean Views From Every Room

Swallow Cottage is luxurious architect designed 3 bedroom seafront stone/wood house with fantastic sea views from every room. The house is 10 metres from the sea with views of Galway, Connemara and the Aran Islands.

It is situated on the spectacularly beautiful Flaggy Shore, a national heritage site and one of the loveliest parts of the 'Wild Atlantic Way'. The spacious open living area has underfloor heating throughout the kitchen, dining room, the two bathrooms and lounge which also has a wood burning stove.

Our beautiful home has large french window/glass doors in every room with stunning sea views that open out into the garden just metres away from the ocean. Perfect to watch seals and dolphins in the bay and spectacular sunsets of Galway Bay with your BBQ.

Step outside the garden gate and a lovely sandy beach faces you. There are several family friendly sandy beaches in the area. A short walk along the coast is the highly rated seafront Linnanes Lobster Bar/Restaurant which serves deliciously fresh locally caught seafood and a great pint of Guinness. The local fisherman's wife sells fresh fish on the harbour just outside Linnanes.

General information. Swallow Cottage is located in the spectacular area of Ireland known as the Burren (irish meaning Great Rock) which is one of the finest examples of glacio limestone landscapes in the world. Formed 350 million years ago, the region is rich with historical and archeological sites. There are more than 90 megalithic tombs, dolmens older than 5600 years and ring forts including the exceptionally well preserved Caherconnell Stone Fort. It is also renowned world wide for its remarkable diversity of plants and animals.

The Cliffs of Moher is one of the most popular attractions of the area as are the Aillwee Caves, the most famous of the many thousands of ancient caves beneath the limestone mountains.

The Burren also has a long history of traditional Irish music which is played in many of the pubs throughout the area particularly in Doolin.

Swallow Cottage is midway (15 minutes drive) between the lovely coastal villages of Kinvarra, Co. Galway and Ballyvaughan, Co. Clare. Both offer a great choice in shops, restaurants, pubs and farmers markets selling locally produced produce.

The area has several excellent golf courses including the world famous Lahinch links course.

About Robert MacIver

My wife is an artist from the area and loved the unique location and wanted to live there since she was a child. We finally built our home in 2004 but we now live in England. We decided to rent to holiday visitors because we felt it was a waste to have such a beautiful home empty for most of the year.

Robert MacIver purchased this bungalow in 2004

Why Robert MacIver chose County Clare

Our house is a traditional stone cottage but is architecturally designed to have all the mod cons including underfloor heating as well as a wood burning stove. It has a top quality kitchen and furnishings. It is on the seafront with a safe walled garden and very short walk to a sandy beach, an art gallery and renowned seafood restaurant/pub.

What makes this bungalow unique

The stunning location overlooking Galway Bay. The house is near some fantastic coastal walks, beaches, prehistoric sites, castles and some of the world's finest golf courses.

Guestbook comments from the owner

For a really special place to unwind, relax and recharge one's energy, there is none more alluring than the beautiful setting of the Swallow Cottage on Newquay's Flaggy shore.

Style comfort and simplicity are all to be found in this lovely home facing the Atlantic, Galway Bay and Aughinish island which looks like a mini Cliffs of Moher.

In any weather or season this place has so much to offer.

Stunning Family Cottage With Garden Right On The Seafront
average rating of 4.9 based on 11 reviews

Competes well with other fabulous places

  • 5 of 5

We like to stay in lovely places in many countries and Swallow Cottage ranks as one of our favourites. It competes well against Palladian villas, Italian castles and vineyards, Garda lakeside hotels and other very nice villas and hotels across Europe.

We have stayed a number of times at Swallow Cottage in recent years and enjoyed it immensely each time. The cottage is ideally located on the Flaggy Shore in Newquay and it directly overlooks the sea. There are fantastic views of Galway bay and the mountains of Connemara on the far side of the bay. Watch for Dolphins visiting on warm days! Across the bay in the evenings, the glittering lights of Salthill bring to mind our stay in the Aeolian Islands north of Sicily. There we watched the volcanic gushings of the volcano on nearby Stromboli island while sipping a glass of wine in the evenings!

The cottage is centrally located for visiting all the local attractions including the Burren, Aillwee caves and the cliffs of Moher etc. We enjoyed some fantastic local walks around the Flaggy Shore and beyond. The cottage is also only a short walk from a number of local amenities such as the Russell Gallery (gallery & coffee shop), Linnane’s bar and lobster restaurant and Linnalla’s ice-cream parlour. The local beach is only a couple of minutes’ walk from the cottage.

The cottage is very well maintained and looked after and the manager is very helpful and accommodating. The cottage is perfect as a base to explore the local area or to simply relax and unwind in the fantastic setting. We look forward to our next stay!

Swallow Cottage Flaggy Shore County Clare

  • 4 of 5

Great stay at the lovely Swallow Cottage, complete with Swallow nest. Very good accommodation, great location for doing nothing and touring around. Aran Islands great, the Burran amazing and excellent food and drink. 7 days of wall to wall sunshine helped things but if image even with not such good weather a great time would be had. Would recommend highly.

Swallows Know Best Location!

  • 5 of 5

We were looking for somewhere special to celebrate our 50th wedding anniversary and Swallow Cottage was perfect. It has it all, stunning location nestled in it's very private spot right on the shores of Galway Bay which is famous for sunsets but with sea views from every room just as special to wake up to every morning.

Built using traditional materials with a light spacious modern interior and well designed layout (bedrooms in separate wing) the luxury of underfloor heating, an extremely well equipped kitchen make this a beautifully appointed home.

As for ways to spend your time, swimming just yards away, the many attractions of the Burren are on the doorstep and a little further Connemara and Galway City

where a visit to Sheridans Cheesemongers or the boulangerie Le Petit Delice will have you thinking you are in France!

The Russell Art Gallery close by serves good coffee and cakes as well as light lunches. For seafood lovers, like ourselves, there is the local Linanes Lobster Bar and Morans at the Weir in Kilcolgan also many more restaurants to suit all tastes.

This part of Co. Clare is gaining a well deserved reputation for it's local produce so pick up a copy of The Burren Food Trail-follow it and enjoy!

The owner Robert made the booking procedure easy and Diane who looks after the cottage is so friendly and helpful, we hope, like the swallows, to return next year.We would have no hesitation in recommending this this property as the perfect holiday destination.

Highly recommend

  • 5 of 5

We used the house for a German Irish family come together and we all really loved it. Swallow cottage is an amazing house, very large, very well equipped and every room was nicely decorated with paintings and art made by the homeowner. The caretaker was very friendly and helpful and we had no problems finding her to get the keys. There is an art gallery (The Russell Art Gallery) nearby where you can enjoy homemade cakes for an afternoon tea. The cottage is a perfect starting point to explore the Burren with Ailwee Cave, Megalithic Tombs and surfer’s paradise Lehinch just around the corner. We can only highly recommend Swallow Cottage.

Absolutely top spot

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I stayed here for a week, using the house as a base to explore County Clare. It was a very good choice. We loved the sea views and the house had all we wanted. We found the double bed a bit uncomfortable (sinks in the middle) and the bigger tv when it arrives will be welcome, I'm sure. An "Information Folder" would have been handy. We did lots of walks including Cliffs of Moher (the entire 14 klms), loved Doolin and all surrounding villages. Local fisherman (Gerry) and his wife supplied the best seafood (fish, crab, oysters and lobster) we have ever eaten, so fresh and delicious. Dianne (landlady) was very friendly and helpful. Would recommend.

Wonderful house in a wonderful location

  • 5 of 5

Thank you for sharing your house. We spent a wonderful three weeks on the Flaggy Shore with fabulous weather in the best holiday home in this area. We enjoyed the views with the ever changing light. The whole house is very well equipped, especially the spacious and very modern kitchen. And for lazy dinners the pub with great seafood is in walking distance! So is the beach and a great variety of walks on the doorstep or nearby. We saw dolphins, whales and seals!

My husband would have enjoyed a bigger TV-screen to watch the football final but since his team won, it did not matter in the end! We can certainly recommend this house and hope to be back soon.

There are so many things to do in the area. As the house is on the beautiful Flaggy shore and 'Wild Atlantic Way', one of Irelands best coastal walk starts right outside the house. The scenery is spectacular. On one side of the house is Galway Bay and the Altantic Ocean just a few metres from your feet. On the other are fields and limestone mountains, ideal to climb and have a picnic with 360 degrees of stunning views. The house is on the beautiful Flaggy Shore with a beach and rock pools which at low tide you can forage for sea life. If you like fishing just walk 10 metres to the sea, or if you prefer just slip into one of the many small coves for a bracing swim. The local villages of Kinvara and Ballyvaughan have markets selling fresh local produce as well as superb bars and restaurants. Galway City across the bay is full of modern shops as well as old cobble streets with Irish music coming from the many bars. The Aran Islands which are in view from the house can be reached by ferry from Doolin (an hour away). The islands are also great for walking and cycling around. The Doolin ferry also goes to the Cliffs of Moher. The extraordinary Ailwee Caves are well worth a visit and just a 10 minute drive away. The house is in the tiny village of Newquay which in my opinion has one of the world's best seafood bar/ restaurant. The nearby Russell Art gallery a few hundred metres from the house has very good teas, coffee, cakes and snacks.
