Sunny Bank Mill's stunning location beside Torver beck is hard to beat, and every single room enjoys wonderful views of the beck, or across the field to Coniston Water.
The large wooded field leading down to the lake provides a great area for dogs to run around off the lead, and there's even a jetty to launch boats from. Whether you like an active holiday exploring the fells, or sailing or wind-surfing on the lake, or whether you prefer to sit and enjoy beautiful scenery in tranquil locations, this makes an ideal holiday venue for large groups of friends, or an extended family.
Approached from the parking area across a pretty footbridge over the beck, Sunny Bank Mill House has an impressive entrance hall with parquet floor. The splendid lounge is light and airy with 2 huge bay windows, a good-sized wood-burning stove (firewood provided), TV with blu-ray/DVD player and a small music system, and is large enough to seat 14 on comfortable sofas. Arranged in 2 groups round the TV and the wood-burner, it's a great place to read, relax, chat, listen to music, play a board-game or attempt a jigsaw - take your pick!
The well-designed kitchen with handmade fitted units contains all the facilities, cupboards and worktop space you need for good quality holiday catering. There is a double electric fan oven & grill built-in at eye level, a 5-ring gas hob, a large upright fridge-freezer with additional built-in fridge and a good dishwasher. Plenty of crockery, cutlery and glassware to allow for multi-course extended dining. The dining-room itself is open-plan with the kitchen and is conservatory-style with wide view of the beck and shrubs and trees beyond, and has seating for 14 round a huge Victorian oak dining table - perfect for dinner-time conversations. There is a ground-floor cloakroom with WC accessed from the hall.
On the first floor are 4 generously-proportioned double bedrooms, with fantastic views through big picture windows. 2 of these have en-suite shower rooms with walk-in showers and the other 2 share access to a family bathroom with a shower over the bath. One bedroom has a king-size bed, two have twin beds and the fourth has a super-king bed which can be made into 2 singles if preferred. Upstairs on the top floor are 3 further good-sized bedrooms. One twin room has an en-suite shower; the second twin room and the double room share a shower-room between them.
If you're keen on outdoor activities, whether that's a windsurfing session on the lake, or a day on the fells, you will appreciate our specially designed wet-entrance at the rear, with ample drying space for boots and coats, and a wet-room with hanging space for dripping cagoules or wet-suits. A large capacity washing machine and tumble dryer are provided, along with drying racks on the wall.
There is central-heating throughout and 2 wifi networks to ensure coverage over the whole house. There's a payphone in the hall. Facilities for children include a good-sized travel-cot, a high chair, and a stair-gate on the top floor. The house is fully detached. There are 3 small holiday apartments in a separate building just upstream (the original Mill), sleeping 2-4 each. Any of these can be booked as an overflow but are also let independently. These Cottages are approached from the other side, have a separate parking area well away from the House, and don't overlook or affect the privacy of guests in the House. Cottage guests do however share Sunny Bank Mill's field and lake frontage and have access to this by means of a grassy lane passing just behind the house (which is also available to House guests and would be the way to take a boat down to the lake if you bring your own).
From the lounge, patio doors open out into the attractive garden (also accessible from the footbridge path), beautifully planted for all seasons. There is a sheltered south-west facing lawn (backed by a high stone wall) with some garden chairs and a large fully-glazed summerhouse with comfy seating where you can relax and enjoy the beck and garden even on cooler days. A gravel path runs a further 50 metres or so downstream, making a very pleasant walk between a wide variety of shrubs to your left and the beck flowing along on your right. Otters or a heron can occasionally be seen; more often an adventurous mallard or two and the resident Dipper!
At the end of the path you can cut up onto the lane and enter Sunny Bank Mill's large field leading down to the lake shore. Here there is plenty of space for dogs to run around or for informal ball games if you feel so inclined. The grass is kept short and there's even a little hidden path through the trees - a delight for young children. At the lake shore there is a stone jetty affording fantastic views right up the lake to the central fells, clearly visible. It's a quiet and secluded part of the lake - a lovely place to sit and watch the water-birds with the occasional sailing boat passing by. If you fancy exploring the lake why not hire our rowing boat and canoes (extra charge)? It's a short paddle over to the island which is a fantastic place to explore.with secret harbours, trees to climb, wild honeysuckle and rocks where you can stretch out and sunbathe on a warm day. If it's not so warm, take a thermos and enjoy a hot drink while you're there.

About Daphne Libby
Sunny Bank Mill is owned by a group of friends who are now dispersed throughout England. We are all passionate about the Lake District and particularly the Sunny Bank area and Coniston Water. We regularly come and stay at Sunny Bank ourselves and so we put a lot of thought and effort into equipping it with everything you could possibly need and ensuring that it is in excellent condition for our guests.
Why Daphne Libby chose Torver
We have owned the next door property Sunny Bank Farm for about 20 years and when the chance came to buy the Mill we couldn't resist. During 2014 we completed a major plumbing and heating refurbishment and redesigned some of the interior layouts to make much better use of the space. We love staying at the Mill ourselves and are always looking for ways to make it even better.

Fantastic holiday large holiday house
Our second time and we hope to come again!
Fantastic location with a field leading down to the edge of Coniston, it must be great for a bit of paddling of the foot and kayak/canoe variety in summer. Our most recent stay was a wet winter week, no problem as returning form the sodden fells we could dry all our gear in the lovely warm boot room...and dry the dogs too!
Our party of 14 aged from 3 to 76 and our dogs just love this house. The bedrooms are comfortable and many have seating areas for the oldies to escape for a bit of peace and quiet, likewise we love the TV room with the state of the art TV for the noisy ones while the rest do jigsaws and read and chat in the large lounge.
The beck is spectacular and a great photo opportunity as it rises form pleasant steam to raging torrent within hours when the rain pours...but never flooded the bridge.
The kitchen is brilliantly equipped with plenty of storage for our weekly shop in Booths..and if you appreciate good food you will love the butchers in Greenodd, the butcher in our party rates it very highly and he is hard to please.
There are so many lovely touches to this house, it really feels as if you are staying in your own home, and clearly the owners are not just letting Sunnybank they are investing time and effort to make sure guests have a fantastic stay.
We even booked an extra cottage so that the less sociable party member could have his own space and that worked brilliantly.
This is a gem of a house, just a bit different, just a bit special.
Thank you so much for a great and detailed review. I hope you will return for a third visit!
Beautiful large holiday house
Wonderful lakeside location, plenty of room for 14 adults and one dog, very well-equipped. We had a fair amount of rain and were able to watch the beck rise, but we also had several lovely afternoons on the lake with the boats. The field was great for exercising the dog and the summer house was enjoyed most evenings. Excellent facilities and beautiful setting - a great holiday.
Fabulous house & stay
Arrived in the evening to a warm house, and one with a real fire and an abundance of logs in the store all provided for us. The house was more than big enough for the 12 of us and bathrooms were abundant. The house was even perfect for our two young dogs who we kept crated in the utility room at night, which had a door directly to the outside and towards the lake for walking them.
The ‘cinema’ room (as we called it) (extra living room next to the kitchen) was perfect for the children to watch their own films in the evening.
The kitchen was more than adequate and very well stocked with pots & pans.
A great location, and highly recommended.
Sunny Bank Mill is 4 miles from Coniston, a small but busy typical Lakeland town, and just three-quarters of a mile from Torver, where the pub serves excellent food. Popular tourist centres such as Ambleside, Grasmere and Hawkshead are about half an hour away by car. The Cumbria Way passes close by and there are many local walks on Torver Common or along the lakeshore up to Coniston. Sunny Bank Mill is an ideal location for mountain walking, boating, swimming, sailing and other water-based activities.
