Why Roderick Thomas chose Wolcott

I previously worked in Montpelier and found this beautiful unique property built just 12 years ago. I'm from Wales in the UK and Celtic. I've tried to give my home a European feel which I think works well in Vermont and what we now have is a unique New England property and experience.

What makes this farmhouse unique

This is a traditional new England build with no screws but wooden pegs and substantial 12" timbers. Slate roofs, Slate and maple floors, there is even a full size tree feature in the main lounge with a spiral chimney again all unique features. It really is a unique property and you wont be disappointed.

Great home at convenient location.

  • 5 of 5

This home provided us with warm and relaxing Christmas holidays. Its location was very convenient for skiing with friends at Stowe, Sugarbush and Jay Peak. It is very specious to accommodate company of friends or big family - kids have plenty of space to play even when it's below zero outside.

One small disadvantage is unstable internet connection, but you can use it as an excuse to get some rest from work and enjoy beautiful nature of Vermont.

Thanks for great holidays!

Love this home

  • 5 of 5

This property was perfect for 6 of us. We even got our laundry done. All that was missing was a couple more face cloths and flat sheets for the twin beds. One safety note: more light is needed on the bottom of the basement stairs. Two of us missed the bottom step on 2 different occasions. Fortunately, we only had soreness and bruising.

Great home for a long weekend stay!

  • 4 of 5

Stayed up here with some family and friends over a long weekend. The home was as described and had nice amenities like a Hot Tub. It was below Zero with no significant snow during our stay which kind of killed our Snowmobiling plans, however the great wood stove kept the house plenty warm during our stay. There are tons of local breweries to check out within 20-30 minutes from the home.We checked out IdleTyme Brewing, Stowe Cider and the Alchemist to name a few. The house had 4 twin beds and 3 double / full sized beds which helped sleep all 7 of us comfortably. The only thing I would recommend is to bring your own Grill if you plan to cook during your stay. They have a Gas Charbroil Grill with a full tank available, but the grill couldn't get hot enough to cook our vegetables, never mind the Ribeye Steaks we had. Fortunately I brought my Coleman Road Trip grill which saved the day (highly recommend by the way: They also didn't have any dish soap to hand wash any dishes, but did have dishwasher detergent to run the dishwasher.

Overall the house was as described and was a very comfortable nice place to spend our weekend away. although I never made it to the Elmore store myself I spoke with the owner Kathy a few times on the phone (property manager), who was very nice and accommodating with everything we needed. I would recommend staying here if you have a larger group of people, it is a very nice home in VT near Stowe.

Beautiful house but needs some work

  • 3 of 5

Just stayed at the red barn, and I definitely had mixed emotions about the place. For one, you have to bring your trash about a mile down the road to the local store to dispose of it. That was inconvenient. Hot tub is very finicky, and there was a loud buzzing noise that came from the fridge area. Don't know if it was the fridge's compressor kicking on or what but it would start and stop at random times of the night as well as during the day. The grill did not work, only one burner would light and was not sure if that was bc of a lack of gas or just defective. The pull out couch downstairs is completely uncomfortable. I would say don't expect much from a pull out couch, but this was Overall it was a nice stay but I don't know if I would return.

Owner's Response: Your right it is a beautiful house and I'm surprised at your negative comments as we pride ourselves on the quality of the house and more importantly its occupants. No complaints were made during the stay and we had people staying before and after. Regarding bins, these are picked up at at the Red Barn by my property manager, the fridge is only a few months old and there have been no complaints, the hot-tub was checked and is not faulty (sometimes when it is particularly cold it may take longer to warm-up). The grill was used extensively by the next people. We always encourage our renters to report any problems to our property manager in the guide we provide. In fact I do recall we were keen to make sure that this was a special vacation even before they arrived by providing flexibility regarding family members arriving early. I would encourage anyone interested to visit the Red Barn for themselves, its unique and we guarantee a special vacation.

The Red Barn is an all round holiday destination in New England suitable for up to three families and/or groups of friends.

Situated only one mile from the beauty spot Lake Elmore and its National State Park and only 12 miles from the Stowe Mountain Resort and Smugglers Notch where there are year round activities for everyone. Bolton Valley in the ski season is particularly good value and family friendly.

Ben & Jerries Ice Cream Factory is about 15 miles away and definitely worth a visit all year round.

The area is very scenic and peaceful ideal for walking, cycling, photography, painting, bird watching etc. Ideal for relaxing or exercising or both! We have a large collection of local books which make good reading and the house has many amenities including 70" Sony Smart TV, Free WiFi, Hot-Tub, two lounges with two settees in each on two separate floors. There are bathrooms on each of the three floors.. Table tennis in the Barn.

The Red Barn is within easy reach of the I-89 Vermont and the International Airport of Burlington (BTV), Vermont and affords a high quality self catering experience with many facilities, for all seasons whether you prefer a winter, fall or summer holiday.

Activities in the area include skiing, snowmobile trails, dog sled rides (weblink), hiking, fishing, kayaking, cycling, swimming or just relaxing in a quiet rural setting watching the hue of the autumn colours. An added bonus is that the Canadian border is only 45 miles away and Montreal two hours by Car.
