This large studio space is located on a private road in South Bristol. High ceilings with many windows and skylights, this space has a feeling of peace, privacy and spaciousness. Double bed, washer/dryer, full kitchen facilities, as well as a fully equipped artist's studio. Perfect for artists and writers or anyone wanting a retreat space. A 2 minute walk through the woods takes you to the Damariscotta River and deep water access to the beauty of Maine's waters. Close to beaches, restaurants and shopping. A small cabin behind the studio building is available as another bedroom for guests or as a music or writing room.
Joy's studio was perfect for our short Maine vacation. Next time, we hope to stay for a week, at least! When we arrived and walked up the stairs to the studio, my daughter exclaimed, "Wow! Can I live here?!" The space is bright and open with a high ceiling. It is literally an art studio/studio apartment with everything in one large room, but so cleverly arranged that as you move from cooking to eating to lounging to sleeping, it feels like several rooms. The studio is fully equipped with all those things that I often wish other places had thought to provide. We loved watching the birds coming to the feeders on the balcony. The grounds are beautiful, and we enjoyed the fresh cut flowers from Joy's garden. The location is quiet enough to be a "get-away", but Damariscotta, South Bristol, Christmas Cove, and Boothbay Harbor are easy to get to. The Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens is a must-do trip. Joy was a gracious host and very accommodating. She has lots of information available and suggestions about area attractions, if you need them. The arrangements for our rental, arrival, and departure were smooth and easy. We look forward to returning next year!
We stayed two weeks at Joy's Artist Studio, and it was perfect! A great location that's isolated enough for complete privacy, yet close to shopping, dining, and local attractions. We have never stayed in a place that was as light, bright, clean, and well-equipped.
It proved the perfect place from which to launch interesting day trips on mid-coastal Maine. Speaking of launching, paddling one of her kayaks in the river is a must-do, and she's happy to help you out with that. It's just a few short steps down to the water. Seals abound in this area of the river, and it's a real treat to sit and watch them at Very close range.
Joy's a wonderful hostess, and we couldn't recommend her studio apartment more highly.
I just spent a wonderful time at Joy's studio. It is fantastic -- beautiful, clean, open, airy, i.e., everything you could want for a time away from everything. I spent my time writing and thinking, and soaked up the quiet calm of the studio and Joy's property. She has thought of everything; it's stocked with anything you could want (down to candles!) and she has set up wonderful nooks and crannies for her guests. She is a talented artist and a generous host--she took me out on her boat to see Stratton Island (a preserve) and go swimming. I am grateful for the time I was able to spend in her studio. It is a very special place. Thank you, Joy!
We've just had the most wonderful long weekend here at Joy's studio in South Bristol. Not happy at all to be leaving today, as it feels that we've stumbled upon a little piece of heaven. Even during two rainy spring days, Joy's studio was bright and airy, warm and relaxing. So much of that is because of how Joy has created a space that is at once home-like and familiar, and also a special world apart.
Joy has included in her studio all the accoutrements you'd want in a well-set-up weekend cottage - all the comforts of home, and just as carefully chosen. Most appreciated by us were the beautiful works of art all around her studio, the fully outfitted kitchen with everything from a coffee grinder to high-quality knives and cast-iron pans, the nice little deck with feeders that draw an incredible variety of birds, and the thoughtful layout that manages to provide lots of different activity areas all in the space of a single open-plan room that feels much larger than it probably is thanks to the high-vaulted ceiling.
The grounds around her studio are also great, as the building is nestled in a northern hardwood and pine forest and surrounded by natural landscaping - with access to Long Cove is just a short walk through the woods.
Beyond her place being very nice, Joy is - as others have mentioned - a wonderfully warm and friendly host. It's no wonder the people who've found her studio come back again and again.
I really cannot recommend Joy's studio (and surrounding element) enough! I just left after spending about 2 months working of music. The situation was sooooo ideal :) Joy was so accommodating with everything! She allowed me to have a piano moved into the little house behind her studio and gave me round-the-clock access to her bicycles and kayaks!! Joy is a joy to be around... so nice, so caring, so thoughtful. Her studio is nothing short of utopian. The working conditions were magnificent... I have never worked so consistently and for so many days straight in my life. Nearing the end of my stay I invited a few friends to stay and experience Joy's paradise. She was so tolerant of this and indeed joined us on a couple occasions "out on the town." Please give yourselves a wonderful gift and experience Joy's studio on the river if you can. She has forgotten nothing in order to make your stay soul-filling and restful.
My husband and I found this property to be even more lovely in person than it shows in the pictures. It is warm, inviting, comfy and beautifully decorated and incredibly well equipped. Joy's studio is located in a wooded setting with large windows and skylights galore that even on a cloudy day, everything looks bright and cheery. The deck offers a wonderful place to eat, read or watch the birds feed or see the stars and peaceful, private surroundings. Joy has provided a lovely binder of maps (some hand made) and information of the area. Damariscotta is a short 17 minute drive, which is a quaint year round town, not touristy, with lovely shops, activities, sites and restaurants.
Everything you need is provided for a comfortable stay, including a comfy bed with lovely bedding and linens. It is a magical place to enjoy your artful side, (this being an art studio) or you can just to relax reading or listening to the birds or music.
We recommend this rental without hesitation, just do not rent the week WE want to visit Joy's Haven.
Located on a private, quiet road, you have access to the salt water river by following a path through the woods. Bring your kayak or canoe. There are Nature Conservancy properties within walking distance. Short ride to beaches, tourist attractions and shopping.
