Peaceful retreat.

  • 5 of 5

Our experience here was positive. The studio decor is white and pastel with a little pop of primary color. This gave a surprise feeling every time we entered the studio. It was spacious, open concept, with the feeling of peace and relaxation. Many windows boasting a beautiful fall view. A short walk and we were at the water’s edge. Awesome view of a New England town on the water. Will book here again.

Just fantastic!

Whatever expectations you might have about renting an art studio for a retreat/ vacation in Maine this place will exceed your expectations. The space itself is airy, full of gorgeous light, tastefully appointed, equipped with everything you might possibly need. Grilling? No problem. In a mood for cooking your own lobster? There is a lobster pot. The kitchen not only has every gadget, but those gadgets are high quality. Chef's knives, garlic press, handheld blender, coffee pot, every size of a pot and pan. Iron skillet? Yup!

The very first impression I had of the place was that it was rented out by a person with a generous spirit. There is a sign of concern for renters' comfort and every need satisfied in everything. From hand drawn maps, whole binders with detailed explanations of what the local area offers, to an invitation to use the bikes or feeling free to use the studio for making art and utilizing art supplies.

We had a great pleasure of meeting Joy, who graciously responded to our question about where to get kayaks with an invitation to use hers and even upon hearing that I'm a birder invited us for a boat ride to see a Bald Eagle's nest. She is there if you need her but if you are looking for a very private vacation you will never see her.

The property has access to shore and I can't possibly describe adequately the magic of kayaking on a tranquil bay with over 40 seals frolicking around you and no other boat or person in sight.

Both the studio and the local area spell retreat. If you are in a mood for a more touristy place, you have options within 20-40 minute drive, while enjoying total magic of serene place to come back to.

The purpose of our trip was to have a vacation with our dogs and to go on a Puffin tour. Puffins are beautiful seabirds with characteristic colorful beaks. They were brought back to Maine in an incredible conservation effort. I highly recommend taking a Hardy Boat Cruise to see these magnificent birds between June and August. However, seeing puffins, a long time dream of mine, was not even the highlight of our stay. It was the immersion in the unspoiled, beautiful local area, a fabulous home away from home, and the lovely private shore. We will most certainly return.

A little Gem in South Maine...

  • 5 of 5

What a gem... Staying in Joy's Studio has been a experience we will not forget... The pictures don't do justice to the beauty of the place. It is so sunny and well-lit, even on rainy days, because of a very high ceiling and some skylights (bring your sleep mask so as not to wake up at dawn)... one-room studio extremely well furbished with everything you need... and more. Beautiful works of art adorning the walls everywhere. Very comfortable double bed. A wonderful vibe of generosity and openness in this apartment. The owner, Joy, an artist herself (read her inspiring and touching book, available in her apartment!), is living nearby, but SOOO discreet (we didn't even get the chance to meet) yet available... Everything was so well organized in the studio (instructions everywhere... and beautifully done too!).

We also took the oportunity to draw and paint with the material so generously provided by Joy (so much!)... It was a wonderful experience...

There are three bird manger feeders that we loved to use and see the various colorful birds come and eat!

We loved the fact that we could compost and recycle almost everything too!

Nearby is Pemaquid Beach ... wow... Bring a small umbrella, a couple of chairs and good books, and smell the ocean.

We also loved Damariscotta's Used Bookstore (Skidompha Secondhand Bookship, 17 backstreet Landing) where we made some super discoveries and chatted with the really sympathetic booksellers (retired teachers).

We were down with the flu and the weather was real cold, and, of course, the apartment was a bit off the beaten track (yet near a sometimes noisy road)... but, still, it was a wonderful vacation because of the beauty of this place, the vibe, the amenities, the art... Very inspiring! MERCI Joy! Thank you. We may come back! :)
