Perfect, pristine location...but BEWARE!

  • 1 of 5

Perfect location in a pristine neighborhood. Four bedrooms easily accommodated nine (my wife and I plus our two daughters, their spouses, and grandkids). Great living area on the first floor. The landlord's sister (there were THREE siblings involved with the lease, the third being another sister, to whom we wrote our checks) kept slipping the check-in time on arrival day. When we finally got there at 6:30 PM, the house was a total shambles, left that way by the previous tenants. We'd brought our dinner fixings, but all nine of us had to go out to eat while the cleaning crew worked. We didn't get occupancy until 9:30 PM that night. The next day (Sunday), we stocked the refrigerator...and by Sunday afternoon it had failed. We lost all our food. The landlord's sister told us that the refrigerator failure was no different than if the power had gone out...but she was leaving town and handed us over to the landlord, her brother, Tom Logan. Tom agreed to reimburse us for the food (which NEVER HAPPENED)…but there were other issues. The listing claimed the house had room air conditioners. Only TWO bedrooms were equipped with AC when we arrived. The heat was in the 90s most of the week. The house was a hotbox. The AC in the master bedroom was so noisy that we left a day early because we couldn’t stand another night of lost sleep. The outdoor shower was unusable, blocked with broken Adirondack chairs spiked with splinters and rusty nails. The picnic table was a gigantic decayed relic, also loaded with rusty nails and splinters – a total hazard to adults, let alone small children. The hazardous basement tenant laundry area looked like the TV set of “The Munsters,” with huge cobwebs (like you see in the movies, but real) and was absolutely filthy! Old, broken furniture, dirty floors, junk and clutter that looked like it was there for decades, and a bucket of filthy furnace overflow water that hadn’t been emptied for who knows how long. The upper dishwasher rack collapsed. All of this was shared with landlord Tom via text messaging, along with corroborating photographs, and is completely documented. In the end, he texted: “Once again, sorry our home didn’t meet your expectations and you had to deal with those issues. We’ve talked it over and agreed to offer you a 30% reduction in the rental which will be returned to you along with your deposit check." I've followed up 4 times and have been completely ignored. He and his two siblings totally stiffed us! Renters beware!

Osterville Vacation!!

  • 5 of 5

We just returned from our vacation on 8/22 and we had a blast!! The house was wonderful and the pictures were accurate.....very well maintained home!!. we had space for our large group... 7 adults, three toddlers, one infant, one preteen and one teenager...there was enough room for everyone. The bedrooms were comfortable and the bathrooms clean (although, the rugs in the living room and hallway needed a good shampooing.) Used the sofa bed for the older kids, The dining room was great for meals. The week we were there was VERY HOT and we put the fans to good use!! The house is on a quiet street. The kids had a great time in the yard playing. They used the bikes, we grilled all nights but one. We went to the beach...you can walk it or take the car. Hyannis is about 7 miles away..enjoyed Main Street. We took the steamship ferry to MV!!!! Overall, wonderful time, would do it again!!

We brought things we didn't need because the house is stocked!! Tom, you did way that!! The kitchen has everything!! The basement has all types of goodies for the beach...chairs, umbrellas, and other beach toys!! The house has a VHS player and our games and movies required a DVD player..should of brought one...oh well!! Worth it anyway!

Tom and Anne - Thanks so much!!

Owner's Response: A little outdated I agree. The VCR goes and a DVD is on the way! The "dog days of summer" on the cape are getting hotter! More air conditioning units are going to be needed for those hot days occasionally seen in August. As for the rugs, they will get a nice shampoo at the end of summer rentals as usual. When spills occur, we take of care of those areas with spot cleaners as needed.
