The Sheep's Head is a hidden gem in Ireland - a little peninsula jutting into the Atlantic, quiet and unspoiled. We are privileged to be custodians of a magnificent standing stone situated in our garden dating back to 1500 BC making it some 3,500 years old. The stone marks the Winter Solstice. It is symbolic of an ancient way of life lived by our Irish forefathers. For those people interested in star-gazing, Gallan Mor is a perfect spot because it has an uninterrupted view of the sky and as there is no light pollution, many stars and constellations can be seen clearly with the naked eye.
At cottage, its all about the views...views from every room. The cottage overlooks Dunmanus Bay right out to the end of Mizen Head and The Atlantic beyond. The cottage on an elevated site, away from the road but you can spend your days watching the fishing boats, sea gulls and gannets and sometimes dolphins in the bay. Or curl up in front of the fire with a good book. On fine days you can eat al fresco on the terrace. There are plenty of walks, long and short for you to enjoy.
The Cottage is located on the Sheep’s Head Peninsula between Durrus and Ahakista on an elevated position over-looking the sea in an area of outstanding beauty. It is an ideal base for exploring West Cork and The Ring of Kerry. West Cork attractions include Garinish Island and Glengariff, the Sheep's Head and Mizen Head. Outdoor activities, including walking, cycling, horseback riding, fishing and water sports are numerous. For golfer, Bantry Bay Golf Club's 18 Hole championship course is located a short drive from the town and is open all year. The Sheep’s Head Way Walk, a 175 km walk has been named by Walking Magazine as one of the best walks in Ireland.
We are a short drive from Bantry where there are plenty of events for you to enjoy such as the West Cork Literary Festival, the Chamber Music festival, plenty of live music, the monthly fair day at Bantry Market with fantastic fresh home grown produce, chickens, goats, ducks and geese for sale too. Bantry town has a multiplex cinema, shops and boutiques and excellent restaurants. Closer to home there are fabulous places to eat such as Blairs Cove and Carmel Somers’ Good Things Café which is also a renowned cookery school. Arundel’s Bar by the Pier in nearby Ahakista has live music, good food and a pub garden overlooking the harbour. Durrus has four pubs some of which serve food and have live music and The Gateway Café Brasserie serves great food all day. The Air India Memorial Garden is a few minutes’ drive from us and very well worth a visit.
