About the property

Gites Le Roc, Bournazel.

Welcome to Gites Le Roc - gîtes; Cerise, Noisette and Amande (visit for more photos). Le Roc is situated on the edge of the picturesque village of Bournazel with views over the Renaissance Chateau and the undulating countryside of the Aveyron. Set in two acres of meadowland close to the 10m x 5m swimming pool, (fitted with security cover and security fence), a honey coloured stone barn has been sensitively converted to create the three comfortable and stylish gîtes. The barn is a short distance from the stone farmhouse where we will be living during your stay, available to help with any requests.

Guests comment on the high quality of the accommodation and its ideal location for experiencing French village life, exploring the natural beauty and the many and varied attractions the Aveyron has to offer.

The Aveyron is a beautiful and largely undiscovered department of France, rich in culture, history and natural beauty. The landscape is varied and provides a mixture of mountains, gorges, plateaux, forests, rivers, woodland, rolling ‘causses’ and lakes. The tranquil undulating countryside is ideal for walking, birdwatching and mountain biking with the many ‘chemins’ leading to magnificent panoramic views. In amongst the beautiful scenery can be found Medieval bastide villages, churches and chateaux, including many of the ‘plus beaux village de France’, such as Conques, Najac and Belcastel. There are also vineyards to visit where the local AOC Marcillac wine can be sampled. In the summer numerous night markets and village ‘fetes’ provide an opportunity to sample regional food and drink and join in with local festivities. The dramatic Vallée de Lot and Gorges de l’Aveyron also provide opportunities for canoeing and wild swimming. Le Roc provides an ideal base for exploring the region.

The village of Bournazel, where Le Roc is located, has at its centre a chateau which is said to be one of the finest examples of Renaissance architecture in Southern France. The chateau is currently being renovated to include extensive gardens in the Renaissance style and is open to the public daily. The village has evolved around the château in the bastide style with narrow streets accessed by gateways in the ‘walls’ and with closely packed houses that look inwards. At the foot of the walls of the chateau, shaded by plane trees, is the village square which is often the centre of activities and the place where the villagers gather to play petanque and sit and chat. On the edge of the square is the village bar and restaurant.

Located in a recently converted stone barn, gites Cerise, Noisette and Amande offer stylish and comfortable accommodation for up to 14 people.

• Cerise accommodating up to six people

• Noisette accommodating up to four people

• Amande accommodating up to four people

If you require accommodation for a larger party you may wish to rent gites ‘Cerise’ and 'Noisette' together to accommodate ten people. Noisette and Cerise can be conveniently linked by an interconnecting internal door.

Deux semaines formidables à Bournazel

  • 5 of 5

See you soon and thanks a lot ...

Vacances de rêve dans un très beau gite au calme

  • 5 of 5

Stunning location where no detail overlooked

  • 5 of 5

The welcome was wonderful. The gite was set out to the highest standard where nothing had been forgotten.Everything was clean and worked perfectly. The bedrooms and shower facilities were of the highest order as was the living accommodation. The view of the Aveyron countryside from the private balcony is stunning and swimming in the pool is a joy. There are lots of wonderful places to visit and the best of these are detailed each week on a blackboard which is by all the other local information literature. There are wonderful places to visit and very good restaurants within easy reach of Lw Roc.

John and Nicky have worked hard to create five star holiday accommodation. They are kind, caring and attentive hosts for whom nothing is too much trouble. If there is an award for gite accommodation or a new business within Home and Away then it should be awarded to Le Roc and it's terrific owners.Go and stay in Bournazel, you will not regret a moment.

A memorable break in a wonderful setting

  • 5 of 5

I have just returned from a fabulous week at Le Roc , where I stayed with five other members of my reading group. We rented two adjacent gites in an idyllic rural location near to Peyrusse-le-Roc.

We have never done anything like this before, but found it worked well as we were able to open the adjoining door in the evenings and eat together.

The gites were beautifully converted; both were spacious, light and airy inside and surrounded by beautiful countryside. As we usually dined in, we were pleased to find everything we needed to make our “home cooked” meals. Our gites were thoughtfully equipped and the decor was impeccable. The beds were very comfortable and the showers excellent.

We enjoyed stunning views of the château and village and loved sitting out on the patio for breakfast and evening drinks

John and Nicky were very helpful, before and after booking, and happy to tell us about both the accommodation and the local area.

Le Roc was a great location for walking and talking or just sitting around reading. Wine and cheese were plentiful and trips to local markets were a sensual delight!

The Aveyron is a lovely part of France and well worth a visit.

All in all, we had a very memorable break in a wonderful setting. We can’t wait to go back!

Le Roc and gites; Cerise, Noisette and Amande are located on the edge of the Village of Bournazel. Bournazel is situated between two medium sized towns; Montbazens and Rignac. Both of which are approximately eight minutes drive away and have supermarkets, chemists, bakers, butchers and banks as well as restaurants. Montbazens has a very good market on Wednesday mornings and Rignac on Tuesday mornings.

Le Roc is ideally located for exploring the Aveyron region and the many attractions it has to offer. For those who love the countryside there are a host of way marked walks and cycle trails, many starting and ending near the entrance to Le Roc. There are many locations on the rivers Lot and Aveyron where canoes can be hired. The Aveyron boasts ten of France’s ‘most beautiful villages’ as well as numerous chateaux, churches and cathedrals which those with an interest in history and culture can enjoy. The Aveyron is renowned as being the home of many of France’s greatest chefs and foodies can enjoy the Michelin-starred restaurants in Belcastel, Sauveterre de Rouergue and Laguiole or the delights of shopping for the freshest of ingredients in the local markets.

In the summer months every small town and almost every village, including Bournazel, holds a ‘fete’ which involves several days of festivities ending with an amazing firework display. Additionally villages host night markets where vendors set up stalls selling food wine and local produce. Trestle tables are set out and wine and beer can be bought to accompany food that you buy from the vendors. This is a really nice way to spend a summer evening, meeting people and sampling local specialities, such as ‘aligot’ or ‘soup de fromage’. If this appeals to you we can let you know when and where night markets are held during July and August.

Places to visit

Conques – Drive time 30 minutes

This pretty medieval village with its abbey dating back to the 10th century has its origins in the pilgrims and was a major stop off point on the ‘Santiago de Compostella’ pilgrimage. Classified as a world heritage site and one of the ‘plus beaux villages de France’ it is well worth a visit. It has many restaurants and shops selling local produce and artefacts.

Belcastel – Drive time 15 minutes

A picture postcard village tumbling down the sides of a lush green valley on the banks of the river Aveyron with the ruins of a chateau and a humpback bridge, Belcastel is one of the ‘plus beaux villages de France’. In the village of Belcastel are several cafes and two very good restaurants.

Rodez - Drive time 25 minutes

The largest town in the region, at its centre the old town of Rodez is perched on a hill around the cathedral. Rodez has all the shops and facilities that you would expect to find in a major town. The newly opened Musée Soulages is a major attraction.

Villefrance de Rouergue – Drive time 25 minutes

This large town situated on the banks of the Aveyron River, has a very fine centre of stone built medieval town houses built around the cathedral at its centre. It is well worth a visit but make sure you go on market day which is Thursday morning when the whole of the old town centre becomes one huge vibrant market selling everything that you could ever need and more. This market is said to be the best in the department of the Aveyron.

Peyrusse le Roc – Drive time 15 minutes

A fascinating place to explore, parking in the ‘new village’ walk down through a wooded valley and discover the remains of an abandoned Medieval village complete with chateau, cathedral, watermill and hospital. It is very picturesque with the river running through it and trees growing through the ruined stonework.

Najac – Drive time 45 minutes

This beautifully preserved medieval village which has just one street is towered over by a royal fortress built in the 13th century perched high up on a rocky outcrop. Encompassed by a meander of the river Aveyron, Najac is another ‘plus beaux villages de France’ and has several good restaurants.

Sauveterre de Rouergue – Drive time 45 minutes

Yet another ‘plus beaux villages de France’ Sauveterre gives the feeling of stepping back in time with its half-timbered houses, sculptured ornamental stones, ornate doorways and beautiful colonnaded square and has many shops and places to eat.

Marcillac - Drive time 20 minutes

Marcillac is situated in the Dourdou valley which has its own micro climate which makes it particularly suited for growing the grapes for the local Marcillac wine, which has its own AOC. Much of the activity in the town revolves around wine production, bottling and drinking! Marcillac has a busy market on Sunday mornings.

Millau Viaduct - Drive time 1 hour 30 minutes

This magnificent piece of architectural engineering, opened in 2005, spans the valley of the Tarn at Millau. The viaduct designed by Sir Norman Foster is a the highest in the world.
