About Konstantinos Skalidis
Konstantinos Skalidis is the 4th generation owner of this property. On a professional level, he is a highly experienced accredited lecturer-guide for educational and archaeological tours of Crete and Greece more generally, and has also written on the history and culture of Greece. He supervised the restoration and renovation of the old family home, which means so much to him, respecting its traditional architectural style and endeavouring to preserve its original feel and atmosphere. Should you be interested, you can arrange with him guided excursions to any sight, museum, i.e.Knossos and the Heraklion museum, he can accompany you to hikes, i.e through the Samaria gorge, or to the summit of Psiloritis(2456m), at reasonable prices.
Why Konstantinos Skalidis chose Rethimno
The Skalidis family home represents the living Cretan tradition. With his long experience in cultural and active tourism, Konstantinos can answer all your questions about Crete and Greece from the distant past to the present day. He can give you the best tips for day-excursions to the fascinating archaeological sites of the island, or to the nearby gorges. The house "oikos 1900" is over a century old. It is being offered to guests for a certain number of weeks per year. It provides the security level dictated by common sense. We accept no liability for accidents caused by carelessness. Adults accompanying children are responsible for their security in the house, in the garden and around the pool.
What makes this Villa unique
Konstantinos can also show you how to cook a variety of Cretan dishes (including vegetarian), as he is proud of his cooking talents!
100% refund if canceled at least 60 days before arrival date.
Such a pity we had to leave the house "oikos 1900"! We promised ourselves to come back!
Kostantinos & his wife were incredible hosts. The property was heavenly - such attention to detail! While we were two families with young children, this villa is also perfect for artists & writers. There is a potential painting everywhere one looks. My only warning to visitors is that this location is so wonderful, you may find, as we did, that you stay at "home" and skip some of the sights you planned to see. We hope to stay here again & stay in touch with the wonderful host & hostess.
Thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Konstantinos met us when we arrived and gave us a warm welcome. The property has been beautifully renovated and is full of character but yet has all the modern conveniences you could wish for. There was an array of nibbles/snacks waiting for us upon arrival and bowls of local fruit left for us to enjoy now and again. Konstantinos has a wealth of information on where to go and what to see throughout not just the local area but the whole island. The village of Gonia is a perfect base whether venturing far or staying close to the villa. Local stores and taverns have all you need within walking distance or a short drive into Rethymno lets you enjoy all the delights of a larger town, plenty of places to eat, shop and party. This was our first time holidaying in Crete and we would definitely return to Oikos 1900.
Charming house hidden away-great base for families
We loved having Villa Oikos as our base while in Crete over the Easter holidays. The location is great, close to Rethymno, yet outside of town. The house has a lot of character and nice spaces. The owners were very hospitable and arranged some food supplies for us to have for the next day as we arrived very late in the evening.
A truly special place
Our two families (seven people in all) had a magical time at Oikos 1900 on our first (hopefully not last) trip to the island of Crete. The home had more than enough space for all of us and was equipped with everything we needed. I especially loved that the house has character and history while at the same time feeling very comfortable with modern conveniences (AC units in the bedrooms). We felt completely welcomed and well taken care of by our hosts who live right next door and are easily accessible for any questions or needs. The village of Gonia and surrounding area are incredibly charming and peaceful. The location near Rethymno was central enough to allow for trips to most parts of the island without too long of a drive. I am already dreaming of returning to Crete and would definitely stay at Oikos 1900 again!
Thanks a lot, dear Rachel! We hope to treat you again as our guest!
A lovely villa in a friendly village
The spacious, traditional villa has been beautifully restored with everything you need, the mountain views are wonderful, especially at sunset, and the peace and tranquillity are ideal for a relaxing holiday, but within easy reach of the beaches and sites of interest.
The owners, Konstantinos and Fotini, are warm and welcoming and keep the house in immaculate condition, they are close by if you need any assistance. The pool and garden area is separate, but completely private and very relaxing.
A car is definitely the best option, but we managed without as there are regular buses into Rethymno which run throughout the day, buy tickets from the local store which has all the essentials. The local taverna is excellent and very friendly and there are a couple of friendly bars in the village too.
We went in October and it was a little cooler than expected up in the mountains in the evenings, so take a jumper so you can enjoy being outside as much as possible.
Thank you to our lovely hosts for a great holiday
The beautiful old town of Rethymnon , a very well preserved venetian-ottoman town, is only 8 km away. You can not just enjoy a walk through the narrow streets of the town or enjoy swimming; it is also a pleasure being there after sunset. The nightlife promises a variety of experience, from music bars with international repertoire, to modern music concerts, traditional music events and quite a few prominent restaurants.
Since our village is so centrally located, you may visit the towns of Chania or Heraklion very easily; it's an hour's drive. One day excursions will enable you to walk through the Samaria gorge, or numerous other gorges, the owner can give you exact information, you can even hike to tht summit of Psiloritis - 2456m- ,the famous Ida mountain.
Another day's excursion can be a visit to the excavation of Knossos and the museum of Heraklion, to various medieval - byzantine- churches, beautiful renaissance monasteries or countless beaches.
