About the property

4 Bed, 2 Bath Farmhouse Near Schull; Spectacular Atlantic Views

Leamcon farmhouse has been in our family for generations and now we've refurbished it to accommodate family gatherings. The oak table in our open plan modern kitchen/dining/living room extends to seat 12. The reclaimed maple floors and large Stanley stove in the living room make for a cosy evening relaxing with family and friends after dinner.

Our west-facing sitting room has sea views, open hearth fire and large windows (with window seats) that flood the room with light.

The house is private- it is set on 2 acres of land 100 metres down a boreen from a quiet country road. The farmland all around remains farmed by family. Our back track leads in two minutes to a quiet pier where you can swim, dive, and fish. A ten minute drive will bring you to a popular locals beach. Or walk 30 minutes through family farmland to a secluded sandy beach.

The house sleeps 10 in beds, the main double bedroom has large windows providing stunning sea and castle views. The double bedroom (downstairs) is ensuite with electric shower. The triple bedroom is ideal for children and the fourth bedroom with its double bunk bed is perfect for parents with one child or for children.

The house is set up for a family getaway, easily accommodating extended family and friends. It has a range of indoor games, books and DVDs. The outside facilities includes boules, table tennis table (home made), and lots of picturesque space to simply sit and watch the cows grazing in the fields and the tide lapping at the rocks by the castle.

About The Owner

Johnny and Sarah live in Dublin with their three children, Jacob, Eli and Reuben. Johnny works in overseas and humanitarian aid, which brings him around the world and when he arrives home the family love nothing better than heading for the tranquility of Leamcon farmhouse.

The Owner purchased this farmhouse in 1890

Why The Owner chose Schull

Leamcon Farmhouse has belonged to the O'Regan family for 120 years. The O'Regans were fisherpeople who lived closeby on West Calf Island in Roaringwater Bay. They purchased Leamcon Farmhouse in the late 1800s and farmed the land for the next hundred years. The house has been passed on to their great grandson Johnny to refurbish it and make into a comfortable family getaway while retaining its many original features.

What makes this farmhouse unique

The people around Leamcon are justifiably proud of their homeland, which translates into a warm welcome to all visitors. The land south of Leamcon Farmhouse to Castlepoint and north to sandy strand is farmed by family members. West Cork is famous for its fresh and artisan food and the house provides the perfect setting for those who want to experience its bounty. Short walks can yield mussels at low tide, and the makings of wild garlic pesto and elderflower champagne in the spring and blackberry crumble in Autumn. Our favourite pastime is fishing for dinner from the pier or the rocks by the castle, or buying crab, lobster or prawns from nearby piers.

Great spot for relaxing in remote Irish country!

  • 5 of 5

My new husband and I travelled to Ireland for our honeymoon and the location was a perfect setting! We loved the remote spot with access to the water practically in the back yard.

The house was clean and Johnny and Sarah left ample directions to operate everything in the house as well as a number of suggestions of places to visit and where to eat. We absolutely loved our stay!

Incredible location - gorgeous house

  • 5 of 5

This house was wonderful and couldn't recommend highly enough. It is right on the water's edge in a very unique and beautiful location, but not so far from town that it seems difficult to pop in for supplies. There is a pier right beside it for swimming, and many lovely places to visit close by, with great suggestions from the hosts.

The house itself is thoughtfully laid out and suits families and groups very well. The decor and facilities are tasteful and mix the genuine age and character of the house with contemporary comforts.

All in all a wonderful weekend away.

Beautiful Seaside Retreat

  • 5 of 5

If you are looking for a beautiful seaside retreat then this is the place. The house is incredible and has every thing you need.

A very short walk to the pier which is perfect for fishing or swimming. (having a jump off the pier is loads of fun). West Cork has fantastic scenery and it's a short drive to many attractions and beautiful walks. We hope to make it back some day.

genuine old farmhouse

  • 5 of 5

We had a lovely 4 day break here,The house is down a lane nicely separate from any other dwellings. It has a pier and rocky beach about 3 minute walk, which is pretty handy for kids and a stroll out you don't have to plan out. Also you can trek out to the old castle on castle point which is less than hour return, that was with the kids too. Also Gun point is a pleasant stroll along country roads which is slightly longer but buggy friendly. Thats just from the house itself, there is heaps more on mizen penninsula.

The house has beds enough for 12, 4 doubles and 4 singles, note the sitting room sofa is a fold out bed I think. The place has all you need and more for holiday break, wifi, dvd's, n all modcons clothesdryer, full size fridge freezer.

Also local farmers are very friendly which is nice, so thats it!

Simply Idyllic!

  • 5 of 5

The first thing that struck us on the approach road from Schull was the setting. The scenery in the locale is really lovely and unspoilt - and the setting of the house itself is just unique.

A traditional old-style Irish home down a small little laneway surrounded by fields complete with livestock (much to delight of our three kids) and a tiny private pier just yards away.

Don't get the wrong impression though - it's not in the least bit stagey or clichéd - its just a lovely homely house with first class facilities in a setting that feels very far removed from city hassles.

The accommodation is very generous, and spotlessly clean. The décor is comfortable and appealing, with all of the modern conveniences you'd expect, and stunning sea views into the bargain!

We were lucky with the weather - bright and sunny every day even in April (true!) so our days were easily spent doing nothing much - swimming, walking, kicking a ball around. It wasn't really warm enough for a full-on "day at the beach", but we went every day anyway, just to climb on the rocks or do a bit of digging - great fun. Evenings are for playing cards in the evening in front of the stove or just watching a dvd.

Even in less kind weather we got the impression there would still be plenty to do in the locality (we never actually got to see Mizen Head - maybe next time) and plenty of nice little coffee shops, pubs & restaurants not too far away.

Our few days felt like we'd been away for ages. We couldn't recommend Leamcon highly enough.

Leamcon (Hounds Leap) is a townland comprised of about 140 acres (1/2 km2) of coastal land four miles west of Schull. The sheltered cove at Leamcon was a pirate haven in the middle of the 16th Century when the authorities cracked down on pirates in the Mediterranean. The medieval castle that you see across the cove was built by the O'Mahonys, the most powerful clan in West Cork, towards the end of the 16th Century. The area around Leamcon is primarily used for dairy farming and offers fantastic walking opportunities in the unspoilt countryside with views out towards Mizen Head and the Fastnet lighthouse in one direction and the hundred islands of Roaring Water Bay in another. A 15 minute walk from the house will bring you through my cousins land and down to an unspoilt, sheltered sandy beach.

The Schull Equestrian Centre is a ten minute walk from the house and provides a range of horse riding opportunities for all ages and abilities.

A two minute walk to the the pier at the end of the lane behind the house is great for jumping in for a swim or casting off for your dinner. Or you could walk out through another cousins land to the castle and enjoy some solitary fishing from the rocks. A 15 minute walk to Gunpoint at low tide will allow you to pick mussels from the rocks for starters. Alternatively we can point you towards local fishermen to purchase lobster, crab, prawn, and crayfish directly from the boats at our local and nearby piers.

The picturesque but bustling village of Schull is a ten minute drive away with its range of restaurants and bars and sailing/kayaking, planetarium, farmers market, and boats to Cape Clear Island. Driving ten minutes in the opposite direction will bring you to Ballyrisode beach, a sandy beach that's popular locals. Twenty minutes will see you to Barleycove beach, a large blue flag beach and just beyond is Mizen Head, Ireland's most South Westerly point.
