About Huatulco (Wa-TOOL-co):
Huatulco is Mexico's newest tourist resort destination and is located in one of the most beautiful areas on Mexico's Pacific coast known as the Oaxacan Riviera. Located in the state of Oaxaca where the foothills of the Sierra Madre del Sur Mountains meet the crystal blue waters of the Pacific Ocean approximately 500km south of Acapulco. Sunshine can be expected over 300 days a year with the average temperature of 31C.
The Bays of Huatulco, or Bahias de Huatulco as they are more commonly known, are actually made up of a series of nine bays and numerous small coves stretching along 26 kilometers of jagged coastline, including 36 pristine white sandy beaches. Each bay has its own unique character. Some have several beaches which form little pockets nestled into the towering cliffs, others are wide open to the surf, and still others have coral reefs with crystalline water and numerous species of tropical fish and abundant varieties of other sea life. Here it is also possible to see giant sea turtles and pods of dolphins. The foothills of the Sierra Madre del Sur Mountains form a framework for each of the bays and are covered with abundant tropical foliage. It is truly an unspoiled tropical paradise where 70% of the area has been designated as an ecological zone.
This unspoiled tropical paradise is best known for its pristine natural beauty and the State of Oaxaca along with FONATUR (a governmental agency for the development of tourism) and the Mexican federal government have committed to preserving Huatulcos' status as an eco-friendly resort.
In addition to the spectacular natural beauty, Huatulco has an exceptional level of infrastructure. FONATUR has made a major investment in developing important elements of infrastructure such as paved roads, electricity, and water and sewage treatment plants. The commitment to maintaining the environment here is so high that this is one of the few areas on the Pacific coast where sewage (treated or otherwise) is not pumped out to sea.
For getting around, taxis are abundant and inexpensive and there are several car/scooter rental companies. You'll find a wide variety of restaurants, from economical to elegant international cuisine. Shopping includes the fresh produce at the farmers market to shops and any type of souvenir in between.
There are direct flights to the Huatulco International Airport (HUX) with charter companies from the US and Canada during the tourist season. However most commercial airlines route through Mexico City.

I have stayed at Quinta Allegria twice now with my family and I just love it! The house is gorgeous, and the view is unbeatable. Monte was a wonderful host, he came by the house a few times during each trip to make sure we had everything we needed, made a few (awesome) recommendations about what to check out, and once he even took us to Mezunte to shop around and grab a few beers on the beach.
Quinta Allegria is an excellent spot for mostly every type of vacationer, the house is in a nice quiet neighbourhood, but a short, cheap cab ride away from the city centre where there's plenty of shopping in the day and dining and drinks at night, and it doesn't take long at all to arrange a day's excursion to the mountains, or neighbouring towns.
I love this place!
This was a beautiful house & with 10,000 sq ft. it had many different areas to relax. Our stay was for one week and our group consisted of two couples. The infinity pool was one of our favorite places to relax....there are fabulous views of the water. The sunrise and sunsets were gorgeous every day. The owner, Monte, was very easy to work with and answered all questions quickly. Monte was delightful to vist with and is available as much or as little as you want him to be. The home is well taken care of and is in a gated community. It is located a short distance to great restuarants & shopping ($2 cab ride) or more shopping and restuarants in La Cruecita ($4 cab ride). Vienna restaurant was a short cab ride and the food and service was wonderful. We had breakfast and lunch at the house and went out for dinner in the evening. Spent one day at a spa in La Crucecita (there are many options) and we loved the steam, mud bath and one hour massage. We were well taken care of for 2+ hours, & was very reasonably priced at US$35.00.
Would definitely book again!
We were told about Quinta Algeria by a friend who visits Huatulco yearly. We were very happy to have taken our friends recommendation on this property. Monte the owner was very good at responding to my questions via email, he was always quick with the responses and answered all the questions we had. When we first started looking through the photos, we thought it was not possible that we could afford such a property but Monte has it set up in a way that you rent each bedroom out a la carte, so we opted for the less expensive option of a smaller bedroom, which we were okay with as we don't spend a lot of time there anyhow. Now, when we say smaller bedroom, this one was gorgeous, and not only had it's own ensuite, but we overlooked the ocean where we could sit on the balcony and listen to the waves crash during the exquisite sunset or watch as the Solpilotes, Magnificent Frigates, or Osprey hovered nearby. Since we had all of this 10,000 square foot home to ourselves, we were a bit overwhelmed when we first walked through the gates, and it did take us a couple of days to quit feeling like rock stars or some Hollywood celebrities. Monte runs a great place, and he makes it quite clear from the beginning that he will be around as much or as little as the guests wish, but with his wealth of knowledge on the local happenings, cuisine, and general history, we spent a lot of time together. We like to cook and entertain, so this place was perfect for us. The very functional kitchen has a commanding view of Tangolunda Bay, and was a real pleasure to create some culinary masterpieces in. (**side note*** Monte was quite helpful while we were making guacamole, and was always eager to try our Margaritas as well). The kitchen also overlooks a very large entertaining space, and our house guests were very impressed by our vistas and the whole place in general. From this large "living-room", you are just steps away from not only a really great infinity pool (complete with built-in chaise lounges), but both a gas AND charcoal BBQ area (we BBQ'd a lot on the charcoal) and two seperate sitting areas, where we also entertained or simply played dice for a couple of hours in the evening. The wifi worked well, so we always had music (we brought our bluetooth speaker, but the house is totally wired for sound), and the lack of televisions was a welcome treat. For peace of mind, Monte is a really solid, genuine guy, and would be happy to answer any questions you have.
My husband and I along with my sister and brother-in-law stayed at Quinta Allegria in early February, 2014. We have traveled to many places in Mexico and nothing compares to the Villa, Huatulco, or having Monte as a host. This was my first VRBO rental and was leery of sending a check and not knowing exactly what the Villa would be like. My concerns were calmed by emailing Monte with questions and getting quick answers. He also helped with some special requests that we had and everything was perfect. Deena kept the Villa pristine and the chef Monte arranged for us cooked amazing meals. Monte was nearby, but not too nearby, to answer any questions and make any reservations we needed. Also, if Monte is making his famous pizza, be sure to get a table!
The view from the Villa was, of course, the most amazing thing about it. But everything else about the Villa was first class as well. The kitchen was well stocked with the equipment we needed, the bedrooms and bathrooms were comfortable, and the common rooms took full advantage of the view. The indoor/outdoor living and having the house to ourselves, instead of being at a resort, made it perfect.
This was our first trip to the Huatulco area and found it to be lovely. The weather was perfect, no need for a sweater in the evening. There was bright sun and hot temperatures during the day but you could sleep comfortably with just the ceiling fan – although air conditioning was available if you needed it. The nearby towns are small and easy to navigate. The beaches are beautiful and the people friendly and helpful. In all it was a perfect vacation and we wouldn’t hesitate to return.
Quinta Alegria is fantastic! My husband and I along with our two adult daughters (20 & 22) had an incredible time while staying at Quinta Alegria. The view of the infinity edge pool out to the ocean from the outdoor living room was breathtaking. We spent each morning leisurely drinking coffee in this tranquil beautiful setting. We have traveled to many beach resorts in Mexico on both the Caribbean and Pacific and stayed in villas, condos, all inclusive and non all inclusive hotels and feel that Quinta Alegria has the best view of anywhere we have ever stayed. We went on outings each day, but we made sure to be back at Quinta Alegria at the end of each day to see the sun set – seven days and we never missed one! We went to the beach that is walking distance of the villa twice – it was a little bit of a climb, but the beach was beautiful and the ocean very swimmable. We also visited other local beaches. Amazingly, every taxi cab fare to/from the villa was about $4 US and when we called for one they would be at the villa in 5 minutes. We didn’t opt for a cook because we love the restaurants in La Crucecita/Santa Cruz. Monte, the owner of Quinta Alegria, was a fantastic host and we really enjoyed meeting him. The the housekeeper and gardener were great as well - they made sure everything was perfect. The villa and grounds were immaculate! We are counting the days until we can stay there again. It was the perfect vacation for us - we relaxed, watched the spectacular birds and scenery, and had great family time playing games in the outdoor dining room each evening while listening to the ocean. Couldn't ask for more!
Over the last 20 years or so, my wife and I have visited a broad range of vacation areas throughout Mexico including Cabo, Manzanillo, Cancun/Cozumel, Mazatlan, Ixtapa and Puerto Vallarta. We have experienced all-inclusives, regular resort/hotel packages and private residences -- but nothing quite compares to Quinta Alegria and our experience. Perched on a high rocky bluff, the view is absolutely breathtaking and impossible to capture in a picture. Quinta Alegria is part of a beautiful, quiet gated community which is great for early morning walks. We were joined with another couple and we could have easily added another because the scale of the property insures privacy and escape if you want it. Monte, the owner and his staff met us upon our arrival, whisked us to our rooms, and within 30 minutes we were by the pool, listening to the surf crash below with a cold beer and cigar. The anxiety of travel, work, expectations were gone. All the shopping had been done and the best was yet to come -- the fabulous authentic Mexican dishes from Rosa, who was our cook for the week. We planned to go out 2 to 3 times for dinner -- we didn't go once. Monte, Rosa, and the staff are the kindest, most helpful and knowledgeable people you could ask for. They are right there if you need help and invisible if you don't need them. While it sounds crazy, one of the highlights for me of any trip to Mexico was Monte accompanying me into town, taking me to the mercado as we picked out the freshest food, from stall-to-stall, and then to a local stand for tacos and back to the relaxing seclusion of Quinta Alegria. It took a couple hours but had the impact of a full day tour. Monte and his staff would make a lesser property a wonderful experience. We miss them and we will go back.
Archeological site nearby. Eco-Tours.
