|Minimum Stay||7 nights|
Visit our Casita, located on the tranquil island of Vieques. Our three bedroom, 2 bath home is tastefully furnished in a relaxed, comfortable bungalow style. The property offers an array of amenities, including a pool, BBQ, washer and dryer, hammock and, of course, the beautiful blue sea a few steps from your doorstep.
Enjoying the Beach at the Cottage: Wake up in the morning and sit outside on your private patio, looking out over the waves at the islands of Culebra, Puerto Rico and on a clear day, St. Thomas, while you sip your coffee. Listen to the sounds of the surf breaking in the evening as the sun sets while you stroll in the sand looking for shells and sea glass, or lie peacefully swinging in the hammock.
Lounge by Pool: What can be more luxurious and refreshing than a dip in your own pool after a long day at the beach? Not much. Lounge in the sun, enjoy the lush tropical foliage, and maybe read a good book. Sit under the fountain and let the water splash over you. Watch the sea gulls and pelicans fly overhead and spot the iguana family that comes to feed on the hibiscus and sun on the wall. Take a night time dip and float on your back and gaze up at the stars.
Easy Living: Two of the things that our guests comment on most frequently are the great night's sleep they experience in our comfortable beds, and the luxurious sheets and towels we provide in abundance. We strive hard to make your experience the vacation you want it to be with a fully equipped kitchen (to help you prepare your fresh-caught seafood), air conditioning in all the rooms, and an outside dining area to enjoy the breeze off the ocean.
My husband, Mike grew up in the quiet town of Houlton, Maine but his family vacationed each year at Wells Beach, Maine. I grew up in Stratford, Connecticut where the beach was always 10 minutes away. We met in San Antonio, while we were each pursuing our individual careers. We both loved the ocean and can't ever get enough of it.
Michael Gordon purchased this house in 2009
Vieques has something to offer all beach lovers. I like quiet waters to wade in and Media Luna on Vieques is perfect for that. Mike likes to sit under the palms, drink an adult beverage while he listens to the waves, and Red Beach is perfect for that. My daughter and son-in-law love to snorkel and Silver Beach offers hours of snorkeling adventures. The people of Vieques are great! The Malecon in Esperanza is fun!
On the Island with the the most vibrant Bioluminescent Bay in the World. Just 20 min. by car from the cottage.
Our family had an amazing time on Vieques and at Casita Del Sol y Mar. The island itself was gorgeous. The beaches were pristine. The villa had everything we needed and more (towels, chairs, grills, kitchen supplies, etc.). The place was clean and spacious. We were located right on the Atlantic Ocean. There was even beautiful fringe coral located steps away from the villa that we snorkeled on multiple occasions. The coral and fish were extremely colorful. The beach has a nice sandy area to swim too. We even had our own private pool at the villa equipped with an outdoor shower. It was nice to be able to wash off after a day at the beach. The vacation was better than I ever expected it to be. The owners are amazing. They contacted us while on the island and made sure we had everything we needed. We had no problems arriving at the villa either. The onsite management was great. We definitely want to come back again!
Had a couple issues with toilet leaking, washer making a lot of noise, and fridge leaking. But Aurelio got people right out to take care of them for us, he's a great guy - even did an extra pick up at the airport for some of party upon our arrival. Though he was thinking he'd need to call a tech for the fridge, maybe it wasn't use to be being opened as frequently. But I thought you'd like to know about it. We just kept a VQS beach towel in front of it, so nobody slipped. We love the location of your place and the wonderful view. It's one of few rental's that has wash clothes, lots of pot and pans. Wish we would have discovered it back in 2007. Actually snorkeled out front of the house - wonderful.
Our stay here was just wonderful!! Everything from the house, great pool to the almost private beach was everything we had expected for a relaxing week. The beach at the house was sparkling with sea glass, it was everywhere, but no need to go looking as we picked up every piece. ;-) It was great that the house had everything you needed to enjoy the beach rather at the house or going to the Caribbean side of the island. When driving around the island (a jeep is a must) it was awesome to see all the horses roaming free and running wild on the beach, something you don't see in the mountains of Virginia. The house was very convenient to the airport, gas stations (only 2 on the island) and the supermarket. Aurelio was a great help from picking us up at the airport to giving us tips on island life and helping us settle into the bungalow. He was just a phone call away. Thank you Mike and Gail for the unique island experience and the comfy, secluded getaway.
This was our second time to stay at this property. I can't say enough good things about it! There were 6 of us - 2 couples and 2 single guys, all from the same family. The 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, house layout, and ample amenities made for a delightful time and we never felt like we were in too close of quarters. Mike and Gail have thought thru so many details with this place. Extra towels - beach and bath, great linens, plenty of pillows, a well-stocked with appliances and pots and tools, beach chairs, tvs, a hammock, outdoor eating, pictures and decor from the island, a pool and lounge chairs, clotheslines outside, washer and dryer... the list goes on and on. This makes island life so tempting, one seriously considers never leaving. :) We were so pleased with this rental - the pictures don't do it justice! And lastly, there is no picture of Aurelio - but we can't say enough good things about him either! He does a fantastic job caring for the place and responding to any needs you might have while you are there! Can't wait to go back!
Very relaxing and fun 5 day stay on Vieques. The location of Michael and Gail Gordon's "Barefoot Bungalow" is ideal. The house is located on the North side of the island, a mile or so from downtown Isabel (and the ferry dock), which makes it very convenient for food, activities and connections.
The house was right on the beach-- a few steps out the front and you are in the water! It was clean, well-maintained and the property manager, Aurelio, was most helpful in getting us settled in. Only downside is that the north side of the island can get a lot of wind (which was true for all our time there), making it hard to do much swimming our snorkeling out front. Not a big deal, though, since we had rented a car and took day trips to beaches all over the island (which we would have done even if the wind didn't blow).
The snorkeling was fantastic (Green Beach was our favorite), the scuba diving unexpectably nice, and the biobay not to be missed. The food on the island was a bit on the pricey side (due to the high sales tax), but there were many good restaurants. Most of the eateries are on the south side in Esperanza, but our favorite was the Coqui Fire Cafe in Isabel.
All four of us, including our 12 and 14 year olds, had a great time. Would recommend in a heartbeat.
If you're looking for a quiet, peaceful, hassle-free bungalow, this is the perfect place. It was clean and comfortable and we absolutely loved falling asleep to the sound of the waves on the beach right outside, having breakfast at the table in the yard overlooking the ocean, and swimming in the small private pool after a day at the beach. Although the house is surrounded by neighbors, we barely saw anyone but the wild horses or heard anyone but the dogs and the roosters. (You WILL hear both of those.) There's air conditioning in all rooms, but between the fans and the evening breeze, we didn't really need it. Mike and Gail are totally accessible for answering questions and obviously care about the property and making sure their guests have a good vacation.
The house comes with beach chairs, snorkels, and coolers for excursions. For food, there are several markets around the island where you can pick up snacks and supplies for meals, although for fresh fruits and vegetables, your best option is the farmer's market, which we caught on Tuesday morning. We usually had breakfast and lunch at the house and ate out for dinner--our favorites were drinks at Mamasongas, and traditional Puerto Rican dishes at Conuco and Bieke's Bistro in Isabel II.
The roads are really easy to navigate, so don't be afraid to drive around and explore. You will definitely need a car with 4 wheel drive to get around, especially on the driveway to the cottage, which is so bumpy that it feels like being on an amusement park ride. Aurelio, the property manager, was great. He rented us a car, picked us up at the airport, dropped us off to get some lunch after our flight, then took us back to the airport to get our luggage which had been delayed on a later flight. On the last day, we just left the car at the airport for him. Very easy and cheaper than going through a rental agency.
There were some mosquitoes around the yard, but they didn't really bother us during the day. The beach outside is a little wild, but great for sitting with your feet in the sand or the water, looking for shells, or snorkeling at the small reef a couple minute walk from the house. Just bring water shoes for the rocks.
Bottom line: if you're looking for an alternative to the touristy resort experience, Vieques is a great, laid back choice. We're already contemplating our next trip and would definitely stay at this bungalow again!
This is in a perfect hidden corner just outside the small town of Isabell Segundo. When Aurelio takes you there the first time, you'll swear you won't find it again! But you will...in the dark too. When it says beachfront that really is what it means, you can literally throw a rock from the back step and have it land in the ocean. The house has a nice bright airy feel and is sensibly furnished. We found we felt very comfortable almost immediately. We have a seven year old so it was nice that she could play and be happy without having to worry about super expensive furniture or priceless works of art adorning the living space. Having said that the cottage is very well thought out as far as recognizing this is a beach cottage and what things you will need during your stay. The kitchen has more than you will expect, we needed nothing when we stayed in and cooked....there is even a nice big pot for Lobster tails!! In the back of the cottage is a private pool, which really catches the sun in the mid afternoon and is very private.
Through the wrought iron gate you will find the beach. It's a little bit rocky in spots but if you wander up and down a bit you can find some nice sandy areas, the snorkeling is pretty decent too; there are swim fins, masks etc at the cottage amongst an assortment of lawn chairs, floaty noodles and the like.
Aurelio is the property manager, he will pick you up at the Airport and show you everything you need to know, he is a super person and you can call him any time, he was really helpful. What was really appreciated was Direct TV, for when the little one had had enough sun.The cottage has Wifi to. Most of the island has 4g ATT as well which is really hand for the Vieques Travel app.
We have already told Mike an Gail we are planning our return and we know exactly where we want to stay ......."Barefoot Bungalow" ...perfect.
Casita del Sol y Mar is located just a mile east of the town of Isabel II on one of Bravos de Bostons' little known reef-fringed, sandy beaches. Just a short stroll west on the beach will lead you to a sandy spot where guests can enjoy snorkeling and swimming in the warm inviting ocean. Walking to the east will take you on a relaxing stroll along the sea coast where you can search for sea glass and seashells and spot the occasional horse cooling off in the mangroves. Other activities are the shops, markets and restaurants in Isabel II. Or, the more adventurous may want to visit the bioluminescent bay, rent bikes, go kayaking, take a hike or arrange for a snorkeling, scuba diving or sports fishing expedition.
Other Activities: Bio bay
