Rustic Cabin with Great Views and Location

  • 5 of 5

My family and my sister's family spent Thanksgiving here this year, and we really enjoyed our stay. Great location with a short drive to downtown or really anywhere in Asheville. The property was extremely private and had a nice outdoor space for the kids to explore and us to relax. We live in Florida, so we were especially in awe of the view of the mountains and landscape. The turn into the driveway is quite sharp, but once you get comfortable with navigating it's not a big deal. There is plenty of space to park as well. The overall vibe of the cabin is rustic, so if you want an ultra modern rental this probably would not be for you. That said, we appreciated the rustic quality and uniqueness of the home. The entire home has wood beams. The kitchen is up-to-date. The furniture was definitely on the older side, but it was fine for our purposes. All of the bedrooms are downstairs, which worked out well with everyone waking up at different times. We had two younger children, two teens, and four adults and we had lots of space. Our only negative points are that the bedding and mattresses could be updated and we had a slight issue with wasps in the kitchen. We killed about five throughout the stay and one of them stung my sister which was not ideal obviously. Fortunately she's not allergic, and I noted the issue to the person I spoke with when I checked out.

I probably would have rated it a 4.5 if I could, just because of those last two items mentioned. Overall great place and I would rent the property again.

The property could use a bit of TLC. We were a group of five college friends and we all enjoyed Ashville and our mountain cabin!

Our family came together to celebrate a 60th birthday and we made the best memories!

  • 4 of 5

First of all HomeAway was easy and very responsive to all inquiries and questions prior to and during the trip to Asheville. The house was in a beautiful setting and the location was terrific. We had plenty of room in the sprawling house and very much appreciated the kitchen as we are all foodies and prepared all breakfasts and suppers there. The views from the decks were stunning and we gathered on the decks in the evenings to enjoy. We also enjoyed the grill and outdoor fireplace. Thank you HomeAway for providing such a great place to make terrific memories for our family!

Beautiful cabin!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at Mountain Vista for a girl's weekend and it was PERFECT! I was very nervous because there are two reviews of this house that were far from favorable and I was so happy when I walked in and realized I had nothing to worry about. The kitchen looks like it was just redone, the house was very clean, and there were enough towels and extra blankets and pillows for everyone. Our only complaint was that the coffee maker was very small...I actually meant to bring my own based off the other reviews but forgot. Oh well. Overall it was perfect for our weekend and we would love to come back!

Outstanding Vacation Home

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in this house for 9 days in early August and were very pleased! I think Tracey P's review must have caused the management company to straighten a few things out. The furniture on the deck was clean and comfortable. There were more than enough clean towels in the bathrooms. I brought my can of wasp spray and took care of the few wasps that decided to visit us (just like I would in my own backyard). The view from the deck is awesome! We took lots of showers and never ran out of hot water. Somehow the entire house is very evenly air conditioned to 72 degrees regardless of which floor or room you are in. Very comfortable! We had the TV on and working great within minutes. The kitchen is big and had everything we needed. Nice family room too. About an hour after we arrived, two guys from the management company showed up with a load of firewood and they also made sure that the hot tub was operating properly so that it would be ready for us when we returned from dinner. Very secluded setting. You can barely see one neighbor and that's it. If you want a super clean sterile environment, it's called the Ritz Carlton and it's in downtown Chicago. If you are looking for a wonderful vacation home up in the mountains this is a great place. If you want the chance to see a big black bear in the driveway, like we did one evening, then yes you may have to put up with a wasp or two. It comes with the territory. We would not hesitate to rent this home again!

Bare minimums done to this property to continue renting it. Two stars only b/c of setting.

I completely concur with Cathy U's review. I have no idea where all these glowing reviews are coming from. I have used VRBO 3-4 times and this was by far the worst property I have stayed in. Executive Summary: Nice location; property is TERRIBLY maintained. The owner should be embarrassed.

Pros:

-Renovated kitchen.

-Lovely setting, though the view is quite obstructed by the foliage and filthy windows.

-Decent beds.

Cons:

-Wasps coming from the easement directly by the main seating area. The management company attempted to address the issue by using 3/4" round foam insulation to block the opening, but it immediately started to fall down and was ineffective. This needs to be addressed, otherwise the one strong positive about this house - the setting - cannot be enjoyed.

-Not all windows have screens so it is impossible to get cross ventilation. Who wants to keep the house closed up and run the AC in the mountains?!

-Over half the windows were broken in some way - Casement crank missing/broken, window stuck shut, will open then won't close, glass cracked, ripped screens.

-The outdoor patio furniture was ok; the "cushions" were disgusting - filthy and smelly. Get new cushions or a new patio set that doesn't require them.

-All bathroom lighting was laughable. Additional fan/light in upstairs bathroom didn't function. Bathrooms smell moldy/dirty.

-No where to hang towels in bathroom or in bedrooms.

-There were sufficient towels, but many were stained or had holes in them. Gross!

-Eight cup coffee pot for a house that sleeps 12?! Coffee pots cost $30-50 - get a new one.

-Insufficient paper/cleaning products.

-No starter firewood.
