Mosteiros Cottage Rental Photos and Description

3 bedrooms,1 bathroom, sleeps max 5

This stonehouse is professionally managed by Vacation Home Management Azores

Welcome to our humble refuge. This cozy home has provided shelter for generations in this peaceful coastal fishing village. Today is no exception if you are searching for a peaceful getaway from the modern busy world you live in.

Enjoy this comfortable yet modest 3 bedroom stonehouse. This home can be your escape into your emotional well being. Open your mind and senses to the sea at your back door.

Take advantage of the terrace for your entire day´s activities… breakfast, then that delicious second cup of coffee and a book, maybe a pre-lunch nap in the morning sun, and then it is time for lunch.

Ah lunch! Now, remember where you are. It is not familiar ground. Sounds different, smells different, and feels different. This can take some planning, but, you know what? It is worth it! Take a white baguette. Not just a white flour thing that came out of the oven brown on the outside. No. It has to look like a pale baguette that has never been sun tanned. Slice and open it lengthways and spread mayonnaise. Not too much, even if you are a mayo lover, you need to hold from this temptation. You spread just enough to taste the tang. Next, lay thin slices of fresh medium ripe tomato, followed by our famous Azorean St. Jorge cheese, the sharp version. Finally the secret ingredient that combines the moment, the atmosphere, the sea and old Europe……fresh, garden grown like nature intended it – basil. Accompanied with a side of olives, not the salty green ones the bigger the better, or the ones stuffed with the pimento that look like a Christmas ornament. No. Look for the container that says mixed olives. They are funny looking, different sizes, pale-greenish brown, purple and black. But, they have the olive oil flavor in them. Frame this lunch composition with an Azorean wine that will complete the moment. Produced in Pico, grown and nurtured in the lava rocks and bathed by the Atlantic sun…….Terras de Lava white 2009 or 2011, red 2011.

Enjoy the peaceful moments of low tide and splash away your tensions in the natural pool.

Finish your perfect day with a BBQ and dinner on the terrace.

Conclude your dinner by watching the sunset on the ocean while savoring the fruity flavors of our Azorean wines or sipping our famous port wine from mainland Portugal.

And to cap it all, reflect on your day as you lay your head on the pillow and allow the murmurs of the ocean at your window soothe your peaceful self into sleep.

Make your reservation early to avoid disappointment!

About Bonita Sousa

The Stone house

Many years ago when I left this island with my parents searching for a better life, I left something behind that only recently I have come to realize. While courting my wife of thirty six years now, I used to talk about returning to my birth place one day and have a house on a rocky cliff overlooking the ocean. A place to reflect, a place to watch the waves dance onto shore, a place to fall into a restful sleep by the sounds of the ocean murmurs. Much like a blanket of soothing words, this connection ties the two together, man and sea.

This cozy stone house, in this quiet village of Mosteiros, has lived this enchanted magic that exists between man and sea. Bound by this magical spell, many of us that have left this place eventually return one by one searching for that little piece of human spirit that was left behind.

I have not found a better way to describe this world called Azores. I can only respond with this, “One has to be here personally and experience it.”

Many books already exist and many more could be written. Yet, with all my heart I believe that words will not describe it.

This magic does not belong to only a chosen few, it is bound to all. However, you will not know it until the time you come together, face to face, man and sea

What makes this cottage unique

-View of the sunsets while you enjoy a glass of wine

-Traditional routine of buying fresh fish, bread and vegetable from the trucks that pass your door everyday.

-Stormwatching during winter season-front seat from your window

Guestbook comments from the manager

Dear Bonita,

Adam and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Stonehouse. The highlight so far was the thermeal ocean swim in Ginetes. Make sure the tide islow and enjoy the hot ocean water.

Wonderful place, highly recommended

  • 5 of 5

First impressions were that it was exactly as it had shown on the web, which is always a good sign. Clean and tidy, probably the best equipped kitchen I've ever had in a holiday let. Really appreciated being met and guided to the property (would have been stressful in the dark in a completely new place) and that Bonita had provided some things for the first morning breakfast. Immediate location was superb, being literally a couple of minutes walk away from a village shop selling a bit of everything in one direction, and rocky beach and natural pools a couple of minutes in the other direction. Pool in the rocks immediately below the property was fab (although was irritated when it was drained to deal with an algae problem and we didn't get any information about what the problem was or what was being done about it), and when conditions allowed, the snorkelling in the bay below was great. Island location meant that it was quite a drive to get anywhere else, but we'd worked that one out before we went!

An enhancement to our honeymoon vacation!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I stayed at the Stonehouse July 15-25, 2016 for our honeymoon – it was the most blissful 10-day vacation we’ve ever had! Bonita and Ed are amazing. Their service to us was incredible, they were extremely helpful to us (beyond their typical ask, I’m sure!), and were always available for any questions we might have had. Upon arrival, Bonita was very thorough with our orientation, and she even went to lengths to explain the best hiking on the island, pulling out her favourite hiking maps. She also gave us a local cell phone to use, which was very convenient. Her best advice: go get lost – it’s the most fun (and she was right!).

The house is beautiful and has the most private and gorgeous scenery of any other placed we looked at – the sunsets are stunning, and the sound of the ocean is most relaxing. Very convenient is the laundry facility onsite, towels, chairs, fully equipped kitchen, the private natural pool along the ocean, and a grocery store within a 5-minute walk away, and the most delicious Italian restaurant down the street – this place had everything you could need! It’s great that other visitors have shared their experiences and tips in the house journal, which again, was very helpful. The double beds made for challenging sleeping, as we are both tall, but we would catch a nap on the lounge chairs on the patio listening to the tide come in – not so bad!

The town of Mosteiros is extremely authentic, which made our vacation that much more special – we truly felt like we became immersed in the town and the culture. It’s not touristy at all (well, the island itself isn’t touristy which is why we liked it so much), but rather a sleepy village, and for us, was certainly a romantic place where one goes to relax, go for long walks, and sit by the ocean to enjoy the view, sipping on a glass of wine while eating some cheese and a Portuguese sweet bun or a freshly baked bun from the town bakery. Although situated on the end of the island, you can certainly enjoy the island coast to coast in one day if you rent a car and fill your day. It’s very close to Sete Cidades, which we spent a few visits there because of it’s sheer beauty and close proximity – one of our favourite spots.

We have shared stories of the house and Bonita and Ed’s service with our friends and we have touted it as the most perfect place if you want an authentic experience. We hope to be back one day. Totally worth it - better than your expectations!

Owner's Response: Thank you for sharing your personal experience! Just to clarify, the natural pool is a public pool on government coast line. Therefore, locals find it nice to cross the rocks to swim in also. The beds are 190 cm long but on occasion, we get a taller person . We are looking to see what we can do for you taller visitors on these beds. Until next visit, have a great year! Bonita

Great location & views

  • 4 of 5

We were only in Mosteiros for a short time but really enjoyed our stay. The cottage is perfectly situated for watching the waves, and sunsets. It had everything we needed. Use of a cell phone was a nice touch.

The town itself was lovely - several restaurants, cafes, a bakery, grocery store. We visited the surrounding towns and sites, really liked sete cidades.

Bonita was very helpful.

Wonderful spot

  • 5 of 5

Although the weather did not cooperate for most of our trip, we had the best view on the Island for storm watching. As 20 + ft waves hit the rocks, we were comfortable and had fun playing cards and reading books. When the weather cleared the Island was absolutely beautiful and Bonita did her best to make sure we had a great experience.

Wonderful stay!

  • 5 of 5

It's always chancy renting a home unseen but for pics. This delivered everything promised and more.

The view was better than any pictures can capture; we spent every night on the terrace watching the sunset. The pool is indeed just down the steps from the terrace, and the public pools are a quarter mile up the road. There's a small market a few hundred yards up the street. The house had everything we needed, and was very comfortable.

Bonita and Ed greeted us on arrival and showed us through the home, welcoming us with traditional sweet breads. They provided priceless info (such as traffic rules) and tips on what to do and see. They also left us a local phone, which we ended up using to call Bonita for directions out of the village. (I should say that the narrow, windy roads were quite an adjustment for two Americans)

We could not have been happier with our stay, and hope to come again.

Impressive location

  • 4 of 5

Pros: loved the rustic feel of the stone building with the tiled roof kitchen. Fantastic views and the sound of the surf. The pool would have been great if it had been warm enough. Close to Sete Cidedas. My wife says it had good vibes.

Cons: car required unless your contend to sit and watch the surf all day, parking tight close to house, limited local groceries and restaurants. We ate out once on our last night at the large pink house at the corner close to the ocean and wished we hadn't, poor service and terrible food.

We have noticed there is a marked difference from renting a unit directly from the owner or through a management company. The owners usually bend over backwards to accomodate you whereas management companies provide the minimum requirements. Small point but in most places where we rent through a management company we had to go out purchase our own toilet paper and paper towels

Owner's Response: Good afternoon Tanys and Roy, Thank you for the recap of your short 5 day vacation. The Azores is very much old world part of Europe. Sao Miguel has many small fishing villages such as Mosteiros and it is one of the most popular of locations to stay on the island. The village of approximately 300 people, has 2 food stores (1 is 5 minute walk from our 3 houses in this village) and a restaurant and 1 cafe shop we have recommended to try. Sadly, we did mention to all our guests never to go to the pink restaurant by the ocean because of the very poor service and food. Cars are always recommended to get around through the day trip of the island. Self catered vacation homes is the term used to rent a home and live as a local in the environment. With more than 9 years in the vacation home rental business, the Stonehouse is one of the 9 self catered vacation homes we privately own and rent for guests. When you rent our self catered vacation homes , we advertise that we provide a welcome first day package which includes 1 hour of orientation of the home, questions answered, maps of activities around the island, events and walking trails, along with a cup of coffee and a traditional sweet bread for a quick coffee break; also dish and hand soap with toilet paper, (there is no rush to the store and pick up emergency supplies in the first hours of your vacation).

Within the village of Mosteiros one can enjoy the black sandy beach that is only about 200 meters from the stone house.

There is a convenience grocery store within 50 meters and a pharmacy at about 100 meters. There are a few café bar types where one can get an espresso or something stronger. Two traditional small restaurants in the village offer lunch meals on daily basis, and dinners during the summer months.

If you are a fish enthusiast, you may get the opportunity of buying fresh fish at the port when the local fishing boats come in around nine in the morning.

In the neighboring village of Ginetes, a 20 minute drive, you will find a place called Ferraria, where a thermal spring is found on the ocean´s edge where you can swim in the warm water.

Visit the Azores and come see the green island known as Sao Miguel. Allow your senses to go back in time and let us make this a special holiday for you.
