This 'mercato' at Carpineta in the Garfagnana was a lovely place to stay; remote from the tourist trail, high on a hillside, in walking distance of the charming village of Castiglione di Gargagnana, with tremendous views across the Serchio valley to the towering Apuan Alps - a view of which we could never tire. The outdoor terrace is spacious and excellent - we spent most of our time out there or in the superbly maintained swimming pool. The bedroom was very spacious and comfortable. The shower appears a bit cramped, but in fact is not so - and all is very clean and well-maintained. There is a great nearby restaurant, 'Il Pozzo' at Pieve Fosciano, which we can also strongly recommend. The immediate surroundings of the house are delightful - fir and chestnut trees, olives and figs. There is a lot of bird life, including the occasional eagle overhead, and we saw deer in the fields by the house on several occasions. Emanuele and his wife, the owners, were charming and friendly, and can recommend many good nearby trips out. We can thoroughly recommend this house, having stayed in many self-catering places in Tuscany, and also found it very good value for money.
This cottage stands privately up the hill. The owner family live close down the hill. The cottage is for max 2 people. The pool is just in front of your door and the owner kept it really clean. However the weather was unusually cold and we could not use the pool :( We rented a car (recommended) and made day trips to the cities around. The cottage is clean and you can find everything you need in the kitchen. As the weather was really cold (6°C in evening) during our stay, we did not manage to keep the cottage worm enough with small oven. And this was really the only problem during our stay. But as the weather conditions were exceptional I belive it should not be a problem usually. The owners brought us extra blankets and did not charge us any extra for the heating. The family was really worm, helpful and nice. They offered us their own farm products and milk. It is very pitty that we could not communicate more with family as we do not speak italian and they did not speak english. Very important: please follow carefully the owners instructions how to get to the cottage as GPS cannot find it and it is not easy task to find the place otherwise. We enjoyed our stay, thank you!
Set in a perfect location, edged by woodland, and just 800M from the walled village of Castiglione, and within walking distance of a couple of restaurants. This character site, which used to be a tiny hamlet has been lovingly restored, and commands amazing views of the Apuane mountains, with a panorama of the Uomo Morto....
Castiglione's most striking attraction is the Medieval bridge built by Spinetta Malaspina in the 13th century. The village is also famous for its well-preserved 13th-century medieval walls with large towers and also its castle. The views from all parts of the village are breathtaking.
Set in the heart of the Garfagnana, distances are as follows: Castiglione - basic facilities 800M and restaurant
Pieve Fosciana - supermarket, good restaurant etc 4km
Castelnuovo di Garfagnana - local market town, famous for its Thursday morning market and with all facilities including train station 7km
National Park of Orecchiella - 14km
Lucca - stunning mediaeval walled city 50km
Pisa - 90 mins or so
Florence - say 1 hr 50 mins
Mediaeval town of Barga - half hour.
This location is a real hideaway, but convenient for exploring the area and is a heaven for walkers
