About the property

4 bedrooms, 3.5 baths

The home is centered on a 320-acre cattle ranch in the foothills of the Elkhorn Ridge of the Blue Mountains. The house is at 4,200 ft elevation and the ridge rises to 9,000 ft. Two small streams flow through the property where you can fish or wade or 'swim' in a deep spot. Hiking, riding, snowmobiling, mountain biking, sledding, hunting and cross country skiing are as close as the front door while Baker and Union counties offer countless more opportunities. Anthony Lakes ski area is famous for powder snow and is only is 19 miles away. Water skiing and sail boarding are nearby.

Not datedThe clans of McL…, McN…& W… gathered for a feast & friendship. As Spring is upon us we enjoyed music, wine & the laughter of nine children & 8 adults. Skiing was good, hiking was great and plans were made to repeat the experience. Thanks to our hosts for everything.

Great location, lovely house, needs attention

  • 4 of 5

We had a great time being together as a family at the Orville Chandler Ranch. Deer and a group of 5 elk walk right through the property, and the sunsets were beyond beautiful. The house itself was clean and afforded us all our own space to spread out, while providing a huge dining table sit and visit and eat together. Why 4 stars and not 5? The outside of the house was thick with wasp and hornet nests and a serious water leak in the utility room (presumably the geothermal heat pump) made for a funky smell in the basement. The property manager was unresponsive to multiple messages, though Sheralyn did call in response to an email I sent about the spraying water which must have been leaking for a while as a contractor was working down there when we checked in. We didn't discovered the problem until the constant sound of spraying water alerted us. By the second day we were there, the basement was developing a musty, wet odor. Fortunately we did have A/C which kept the basement cool, though the upstairs gets very warm during the afternoon and early evening. At least one basement bathroom has a faulty diverter so the shower barely trickled water and one of the full/queen beds downstairs squeaked loudly with every move. The biggest issue we had was with the wasps and hornets though. We found multiple cans of insect spray, and used them, so we were able to control a lot of the wasp traffic. But two huge and active hornets nest above and below the master deck made it unusable and we had to be very careful with our dogs and children when outside around the house. It's nature, I know, but a good property manager would observe and take care of those kinds of things. All that being said, I'd recommend this place. It is nestled up against the tree line, and the views over the pastures are gorgeous. I hope the issues we pointed out get resolved. (By the way, I hadn't planned on mentioning the issues in a public review, but I got no response from the owner or manager to my private email informing them making me wonder if our feedback was received or matters.)

The City of Haines, population 420, is 8-miles away, with Baker City, population 9,800, 20-miles away providing the comforts of small town needs. Baker Valley, an agricultural center of industry, was a thriving gold mining center in its history with numerous ghost towns to explore. The Oregon Trail passed through the valley below the Ranch where the Oregon Trail Interpretive Center is about 25-miles away. Deer, elk, coyote, turkey, bear and other wild animals live on the Ranch and can be seen from the comforts of the house or outside on the decks. The Ranch includes both forest and open fields. During the summer cattle graze just outside of the yard. This home was designed and built for vacations, and was completed in January 2003. We have tried to include everything to make your stay comfortable. The nearest neighbor is 1/2 mile away so privacy and quiet is assured.
