About the property

Complete Privacy, Open Plan Living Space, 2 Beds, 2 Baths, All Amenities

This Charming village cottage is approached by an ancient cobbled lane at the end of a cul-de-sac. It nestles just below the centre of the village overlooking the orchards. A short walk up the lane past the ancient washing place and the town hall brings you to the Plaza.

Behind the house, beyond the gardens, are the woods and a Torrente - or stream, there are many species of birds living there including escapee parrots and a pair of Nightingales.

The house consists of an open plan living/dining and kitchen leading, through French doors, onto a secret walled garden, perfect for breakfast. There is also a cosy cave at the back of this little garden, to escape to in the heat of the summer.

Another set of French doors lead out of the living room area, down four steps, to the larger secluded garden and swimming pool. Two nicely appointed bedrooms with bathrooms lead onto the pool area through French doors.

For al fresco dining a table is set under the boughs of a lovely grape vine by the pool, with total shade in the summer. There is also an outside shower by the pool.

Two magnificent cypress trees stand sentinel over the gardens which form an arch through to a charming patio which overlooks the river with wonderful mountain views. The owners are very keen gardeners and there is an abundance of plants and flowers in addition to lemon, orange and olive trees.

The whole property is very quiet and tranquil with no traffic or immediate neighbours, except a few chickens.

The gentle twittering of the birds in the woods around the torrent create a rural atmosphere.

The main square or Plaza is only 2 minutes' walk from the property, the 4 bars and 6 restaurants, all very central. A bakery, small supermarket, pharmacy and two boutiques cluster around the square. There is a tennis court in the village and about 2 km away a sports centre with tennis, paddle tennis and Olympic size pool.

The port of Soller is about 5 km with sandy beaches, a marina, where one can rent a boat, or take trips up the fabulous mountain coast, many good restaurants and beach facilities to tempt all ages. Car, scooter and bicycle hire are also available. The Tramuntana mountains of this region are quite magnificent and offer great walking. The coastline with its delightful coves and calas are still completely unspoilt. There are many beach activities and excellent dining.

There are some marvellous things to explore in Mallorca and don't be put off by reports of Magaluf and Arenal, all distant from this area.

It is possible to drive down to the end of Calle Alba to drop off luggage and groceries.

About Judy Wood

We are Andrew Wood, a film producer, and Judy Wood a Montessori teacher. We fell in love with Fornalutx and were even married here 35 years ago. We have owned a village house and holidayed with our children here ever since. We have decided to split our time between Fornalutx and Australia, Judy's homeland.

Judy Wood purchased this cottage in 2012

Why Judy Wood chose Deia - Soller Region

We wanted a larger house with a garden and pool and when this became available we were delighted. It has always been a cosy house and now that it is our home we hope you will agree it has been tastefully renovated. It is so tranquil and although only a stone's throw from the village square, shops and restaurants, it is like living in the country. Also we have a very special friend who lives in the house opposite.

What makes this cottage unique

Reflections of the sunset on the mountains in the pool. The birds and the wind rustling in the woods at the end of the garden.

Guestbook comments from the manager

A great recommendation from my sister Alice. Gorgeous house, beautiful gardens and very sweet sounds at night. By day, the sheep, peacock cries, next door chickens, birdsong made us feel right at home. For the next visitors, some tips: restaurant on left on way up out of the village was our best meal - the little place a little further up on right (purple placemats) also v.good. Tram from Soller to the port although pricey @ €6pp one way (incl. kids) worth it especially for kids, and will give you glimpses of ordinary life as you pass people's homes and gardens. The marked path from here to Biniaraix is worth doing, about an hour each way. We left our inflatable 'mattress' floater here for you - ENJOY. We loved this place.

Spectacular views, beautiful village, great location, refreshing pool, everything we hoped for!

  • 5 of 5

The property is in a great spot, very close to restaurants, cafes and store but still feels completely private. The views are just breathtaking and can be enjoyed from the beautiful garden and in the pool. The house was well-equipped for cooking and had a number of fans (very hot during our stay) so we were always comfortable. We would recommend S'aturada as our favourite restaurant in the village. Can't wait to return to Fornalutx and stay at Casa S'hortet again!

Owner's Response: Thankyou Meg and Liam for your lovely review. We are so happy to know you had an enjoyable and comfortable stay. It has been extremely hot, so I'm glad you had enough fans to keep you cool, as well as several dips into the pool! S'Aturada is one of our favourites too, particularly the lamb, paella, and fish. The service is attentive and friendly. We look forward to welcoming you back to S'Hortet any time!

A great holiday home in a beautiful village.

  • 5 of 5

We, a family of four, all loved S'Hortet. The location was very quiet and private as others have said, yet very near the village square, shop and the very good little bakery. The gardens were lovely with fantastic views of the mountains and the pool, which we were in every day, was fabulously refreshing after a hot day out. There are quite a few restaurants and we ate in S'Aturada and Es Turo (great seafood paella) and enjoyed both very much. A great holiday home in a beautiful village. Thanks for a wonderful stay.

Great! Picturesque setting, private, quiet, pool, spacious, close to amenities

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay. There were 4 of us with 2 children 8 and 13 yrs. The overall size of the cottage including garden area was a good size and the pool which was roughly 4mx3m (possibly slightly bigger) was fine even when all of us were in the pool at the same time - the pool was an added bonus as it was very hot. We found 4 fans in the house which also helped with the heat. The description provided on Owners Direct is acurate. The village supermarket and bakery is 3-4min walk from the property in the town square and well stocked and reasonable prices. There are also at least 4-5 other restuarants in the town which are no more than 5-10mins walk away. We ate in one and it was very good (can't remember name! - but they all looked good). A bus runs a few times a day from Fornalutx to Soller and then Port Soller (where there is a sandy beach and tram - boat excursions and shopping can also be done here) the first at 915am and the last bus returns at 515pm. It takes about 15mins by bus and costs 1.50 euros pp. In either places you can catch a connecting bus to Deia, Valldemossa and Palma. We went to Deia which was beautiful and has a lovely shingle beach and 2 restuarants which serve fresh fish - delicious! We deliberately did not hire a car and this was do-able as the transport was good although there could have been more bus connections at regular intervals. We probably would hire a car if we came back. Overall, we had a great time and were sorry to leave. Thank you Judy for your quick response to answering all my questions of which there were a few! and for providing a great location and charming place for my family and I to spend our summer holidays!. Owner's Response: Dear Cathy, Thankyou for writing such a detailed review of your stay, especially with regard to public transport. I'm sure this will be very helpful to others wondering whether it is viable, not only locally but you were able to enjoy trips further afield and see something of the island. I'm so pleased the house and pool offered everything you needed and that you and your family had an enjoyable holiday. We would be happy for you to return in the future. Kind regards, Judy

Delightful Casa in Fornalutx

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in Fornalutx last year, but up the mountain from the main car park. So it was good to stay much closer to the village centre and restaurants which are an easy stroll away. The situation is so peaceful with only the sounds of the countryside to lull you during the day and nothing to prevent a good night's sleep. Two good size bedrooms and a good size living area. The lovely garden with pool in situ is an oasis of calm and privacy. Prefer a bigger pool, but it was adequate for a cooling dip and a few strokes each way for some exercise. An outside shower (with tub to conserve and use the the water expended on the garden-good idea), made the transition from 35/40 deg heat to the pool temperature less of a shock!

Al fresco eating under vine cover shade was just as we like it.

We found the cottage homely and welcoming, fully equipped and felt it was ideal for two adults and another couple of close friends/family or a family with teenage children.

Perfect stay.

  • 5 of 5

This home is fabulously located within the Village of Fornalutx just a minute walk to the square. It is very quiet and affords amazing views from the patio area. The kitchen is outfitted well for cooking and the bedrooms open onto the patio pool area allowing light into all spaces. Parking was not an issue, we always found a space at the public car park at the top of the hill. The pool was the perfect size for cooling off after a long hike. There is an additional outdoor seating area in a grotto in the small garden off the kitchen which served as my husband's work space on nice days. I highly recommend this property for couples or families . We stayed for six weeks April-June 2017 and loved it.!

The village of Fornalutx - voted prettiest village in Spain - nestles on the slopes of the Puig Mayor mountain in the beautiful Soller Valley. Stunning mountain views, great hiking, and all summer activities within 15 minutes. There is excellent diving and snorkelling along the unspoilt coastline of the Tramuntana Mountains. There are many great restaurants in the port and a marina with boat hire available.

The town of Soller, 2kms down the road, is absolutely charming with a tram snaking its way through the main square to the Port of Soller. There is a wonderful Saturday morning market as well as a covered fish and produce market. There is also a classic small gauge train which runs through the mountains to Palma 4 times a day.
