A 4 Bedroom tastefully-converted Barn, Set In medieval Coly, Perigord Noir.

La Vieille Grange is perfectly situated on the edge of the medieval village of Coly, surrounded by the dense oak forest of Perigord Noir. This is a tranquil, rural retreat yet it offers easy access to the main tourist sites of the Dordogne region: Lascaux (15 minutes), Sarlat ( 25 minutes) and Les Eyzies ( 30 minutes). A good restaurant and bar are within easy walking distance.

The south-facing accommodation, with its abundance of old beams and stone walls, has been tastefully converted into a comfortable family home. The main entrance opens into a large reception hall with stairs leading to the first floor. A doorway leads into the comfortable living room with its large, stone fireplace. There is a TV and DVD player and Wi-Fi internet access. There is a separate, spacious kitchen, with extending dining table, sofa, high chair, electric oven and gas hob, dishwasher, washing machine, fridge-freezer and microwave. The downstairs shower room is perfect for use after swimming.

The first floor comprises: 4 double bedrooms; gallery study ; large family bathroom (with shower over); separate shower room and separate toilet. The family room has a double bed, 1 single bed and a cot. The family and twin bedrooms offer some flexibility in accommodation as long as prior notice is given. There are two further double bedrooms. When booking, guests can request sleeping arrangements to suit the requirements of their party.

At the front of the property there is a drive with ample parking for 3 cars. Adjacent to this is a garden with a lawn, flower borders and a private, family-friendly swimming pool which is alarmed and easily visible from the living room and kitchen.Screening along the side of the drive makes the garden and pool private. To the rear of the property is a large stone terrace, ideal for family eating, relaxing in the shade or holding a barbecue. This is surrounded by natural woodland rising up behind the house.

About The Owner

Originally from Warrington, Cheshire, we have lived in a beautiful part of the Brecon Beacons National Park for the past thirty years, having both been teachers in the Welsh Valleys for many years. We first visited the Dordogne over thirty years ago and fell in love with the area, returning many times over the years until, in 2010, we finally fulfilled a long-held ambition to buy a property here. Now retired, we have spent the past three years converting La Vieille Grange into our dream holiday home to share with our family and guests.

Why The Owner chose Perigord Noir

We both feel privileged to have found such a lovely place, in such a friendly and idyllic location. We have a love of history and prehistory so this was the ideal place to buy a property. The area is so rich in archaeological treasures. The villages, small towns and cities are magical too and the countryside around Coly is absolutely beautiful.

What makes this barn unique

This is such a peaceful place, particularly in the early morning and evening when deer can often be seen grazing close by. The house is south-facing and we have sun at the front from early morning to evening. Even when the temperature soars to 40 degrees the house is cool and restful, due to the thick stone walls. You can leave the house and walk all day through the forest, usually without meeting anyone. Coly is a friendly and typically French village where you can usually buy anything you require from the shop. The bar/restaurant is not a tourist trap but serves French cuisine using local produce. Le Manoir Hautegente, on the edge of the village, is a beautiful hotel with a superb restaurant ( President Hollande helicoptered in to eat there in 2012!).

Fantastic family holiday 2016

What a fantastic home away from home....with a pool! Our family (6 adults and 2 children) had a fantastic time. We've stayed around the area in recent years and having a beautiful place to come back to. The village is very sweet with a couple of lovely places surrounding it. The homeowners are wonderful too! Very helpful with things to do in the area, leaving plenty of leaflets on visitor attractions, pool toys, essentials and a very welcoming hamper on arrival. Overall stars. Looking forward to booking our next visit 😀☀️

Top Class Holiday Rental

We had a great week in Coly. The house is excellent, roomy and with loads of quality. All the furnishings are in top condition and the equipment is also up to scratch. The pool is brilliant as is the outdoor BBQ and eating area. Our two grandsons had a great time as did the 4 adults with them. The village is well situated to enable us to visit the local sights and there is plenty to do in the area. Overall a great place to stay.

Lovely house in the perfect location

The house was beautiful and well furnished in a perfect location to explore the surrounding area. We enjoyed lots of days out, Lascaux caves, canoeing on the Vezere, the market in Sarlat and a visit to the Monkey Forest in Rocamadour to name just a few things. The children also really enjoyed spending time in the family friendly sized pool.

The owners were extremely helpful, answering emails promptly, providing a great information pack and a lovely welcome basket of goodies on our arrival. I would not hesitate to recommend this property, we had a really enjoyable two week break.

Great house, good location, perfect holiday

From the time I enquired about booking this house Ed and Janet, the owners, have been fantastic. The house itself was all we'd hoped for from the photo's, in fact it was even better. It has everything you need, it is a very 'comfortable' home and has been renovated to a high standard.

We had some great days out, I can recommend the night market at St Amand de Coly, I would also highly recommend a visit to Brantome Police Horses and's a retirement home for police horses, they provide cream teas and a tour of the stables and is a really nice afternoon out.

I highly recommend booking a holiday at La Vieille Grange.

Great holiday in superb accommodation.

We had a wonderful holiday at La Vieille Grange, not least because of all the provisions and ‘extras’ within the home. We took far more with us than we needed for our ‘self catering’ holiday as so much was in situ: pegs, washing line, dishwasher tablets, soap, kitchen equipment and provisions, games etc. This really made it feel home from home.

Coly is a small village but with a very welcoming bar - Le Table de Jean. There is plenty to do in the surrounding area: Sarlat, markets, night markets etc. or just laze by the lovely clean pool.

We travelled as 3 generations: grandparents, children and grandchildren (3 years and 7 months) and the house was set out really well for this with no one disturbing anyone else! Thanks to Janet and Ed for all their help and advice before we left, we would definitely recommend this accommodation to others. Thanks for a great holiday.

A lovely house... great attention to the decorative details and home comforts... the beds were great. The owners were very helpful and provided lots of information before our stay and were on hand if needed whilst we were there for any little queries. It's a very beautiful area and we didn't travel more than an hour to any sights. One of the best evenings was spent at St Amand de Coly village soiree, although we also did Lascaux, Sarlat, Roque Gageac, troglodyte villages, Marqueyssac and Martel steam train. Plenty to keep all ages entertained around the area. The weather was marvellous and we put the pool to good use. Lots of happy memories of our week in Coly.

La Vieille Grange is ideally situated for visiting the prehistoric sites of the Vezere Valley, particularly Lascaux 2 and Le Thot. The area has many beautiful chateaux, such as the nearby Chateau de Losse, and delightful gardens like Les Jardins de l'Imaginaire, ten minutes drive away. The forest and hills which surround Coly are perfect for walkers and cyclists and there is an abundance of wildlife on the doorstep. Deer, red squirrels and wild boar have been seen close to the house in the evening and early morning and coypu (‘ragondin’) are often seen in the nearby River Coly.

There are opportunities for canoeing on the Vezere in Montignac, only ten minutes drive away and wild swimming in the River Coly on the way to Condat. The beautiful village of Saint Amand de Coly (one of the designated 'Plus Beaux Villages de France'), with its magnificent 12th century fortified abbey, is within walking distance, 3 kms along the lane. Visitors and local people enjoy the summer night markets at Saint Amand and Saint Genies, where local food ( cooked and eaten al fresco) and good wines are accompanied by live music, creating a great atmosphere. The fabulous medieval city of Sarlat, with its famous market, is only twenty five minutes away by car. Les Eyzies and its national museum of prehistory is half an hour away. All the major tourist sites on the Dordogne river are easily accessible too. Classical concerts are held alternately in the abbey at St Amand and the church of St Leon de Vezere throughout the summer and Montignac hosts a well-established international music festival in July.
