Our Charming cottage is located three blocks from Ridgevale Beach and Nantucket Sound. In addition to charm, the cottage has two zone air conditioning, Three bedrooms, 2.5 bathrooms, two with Jacuzzis, fireplace in living room, separate TV viewing areas, very well equipped kitchen with washer & dryer offers all the amenities of a new home. over 500 sq ft of well-furnished deck space with outside shower and bird feeding station nearby provides exceptional space for outdoor living, dining and relaxation.
Ridgevale Beach: The cottage is filled with comfort and charm but the beaches, both salt and fresh water, are the biggest attraction. From the cottage it is a short walk down to the Sound and any time of day or night there is a new aspect of sea and sky. The walk is very short but takes you past the marshes of Bucks Creek where the egrets are always feeding and the beach plums and rose hips are ripening. In the summer there is a small beach shop at the edge of the beach where sail boats can be rented. The two wooden bridges over Bucks creek leading to the beach have been used many times in wedding photos.
#6 Brittain. : The cottage itself has gone through five revisions but was built just after the war by Brittain himself. In the latest revision (2005) a second floor was added and that can provide a view of Monomoy Island. The floors are pine and decor could be called old Cape but the ammenities are all new. There are some antitques and curiousities valued mostly by the owner but the emphasis is comfort. The living space is really the two level deck. Besides entertaining and eating, we shower outside under the sun or stars. The bedrooms are ensuite and very suitable for children and parents upstairs and grandparents down stairs.
Chatham: Chatham has a reputation for charm. It was first a fishing village and today has a commercial fishing pier which invites visitors to view the operation. In summer there a two main events in the town. First is the band concert every Friday night, once featured in National Geographic Magazine. The second is the baseball games, popular as the college players are being scouted for the 'majors'. The shops and restaurants deliver excellent quality as does the Monomoy Theater and the Ohio University players who perform there.
I have lived in Kinsale in Ireland for the past 10 years but the Cape and Chatham have been our family vacation location for 40 years. I had intended to retire to the Cape in this cottage but then I married a retired Irish farmer so here we are. Kinsale is on the water, as is Chatham, there is one similarity. We have found that the cottage and family home nearby are gathering places. Once a year our family meets coming from Mn and Ireland. We began as vacation renters in the 70's and it has turned into the home place, so to speak.
My parent's vacation/retirement home is very nearby. My father found the cottage, I bought it. It was a perfect restoration project for me and another reason to bring all of our family together in Chatham over the past 30 years. Buck's Creek empties into the Sound at Ridgevale Beach. It was the Bucks who built my parent's vacation /retirement home. Their family goes back to the Mayflower. It is in Buck's Creek that all of the little ones "go fishing".
In the renovation/reconstruction, I tried to include features that I thought typified the Cape. I had my family and visitors in mind and privacy is an issue for me. It seems every year there is just one more small thing to add or complete. and that is part of the fun for me and I hope for you. Actually over the years I have had the best tenants. They have added and rearranged and really helped make the cottage what it is.
As others have mentioned, the house is quite lovely and perfectly appointed. We spent the week of July 4th here in 2015. It was clean and and very well maintained and they provide an amazing assortment of kitchen utensils and cooking basics. As the property write-up claims, the house is indeed restored beautifully with care and charm. The deck is amazing with multiple seating areas and a hammock and the lovely outdoor shower is easily accessible right on the deck. We did call the handyman the owner had provided to repair one loose board and he came to fix it immediately.
The configuration of the house worked very well for us. We were five adults. My mother, who is in her 80's, stayed in the master bedroom on the main floor and my husband and I and my sister and her husband took the two upstairs bedrooms. The little upstairs balcony was great for viewing the fourth of July fireworks from all the neighboring towns in the distance.
The location is perfect: a five to seven minute walk to the beautiful and scenic Ridgevale beach--which has a unique tide pool that forms so that in addition to the light surf of the sound for those that like the waves, you get a sort of "wading pool" for the little ones.
We would definitely return to this house. Renting the house was a little disconcerting since the owner lives in Ireland year-round and we were asked to send our check there, but she is lovely and responsive.
We stayed here for our honeymoon in April. We had a fantastic time. The "cottage" (far to spacious to be called a cottage!) was perfectly appointed, not to far from the town and the beach. The deck was amazing and we loved sitting in the morning watching the birds, squirrels and the occasionally rabbit having a munch on the bird food provided.
The cottage has everything you need for your stay, the kitchen has all materials needed in all the obvious places. We instantly felt at home here. The cottage is nicely decorated, with ample seating between the 2 sitting rooms. The jacuzzi baths were an added treat. The white book provided in the cottage was a great idea and we added to it if we came across somewhere nice to eat or something worth visiting. I highly recommend perusing the white book before you make any reservations!
We had a slight problem with the phone when we arrived, but there was a number for a handyman on the fridge, left by the owner. He came straight away to fix the problem, which turned out to be a fault in the line (so not the fault of the cottage, other residents were also affected). I thought that this was a fantastic service and we had no other need to call him on out 2 week stay. The property is well maintained, nicely decorated and clean. I would definitely recommend this property to my best friend for a stay on Cape Cod. Chatham is a charming town with lovely places to eat and lots to do in the surrounding area and good service facilities.
A special thanks to the owner for all her help prior to our arrival. The directions and information generously provided and she answered all our questions, no matter how mundane!
We were two couples and a young toddler and had a fantastic time. It's a very, very roomy Cottage with lots of living space for people to spread out. The deck is very, very large with lots of furniture, a great grill, a great hammock. It was no problem to store bikes outside. The kitchen is very well-equipped - even a garlic press and individual butter warmers. The bedrooms are nice, especially appreciated were the curtains & shades in the toddler's room which made it nice & dark for nap time. The property was clean and clearly well-maintained. There was some trouble with the wireless but the owner offered a reduced rate for the following year as compensation. The owner was very helpful throughout the rental process. At the time, the owner was abroad but we still talked over phone/skype. It would have been helpful to have a local person to contact, just in case.
The beach is an easy walk/bike, although with the toddlers' stuff we choose to buy the $60 weekly pass.
All in all, a great stay and we'll be back.
3 couples and a toddler spent a week in August and we had a phenominal time. House was great and was a very short walk to the beach. One drawback, at night the Olympics were on and the TV in the den was tiny. The other TV was in a room where only 2 people could sit. However, due to the fact we were only watching TV for a couple of hours a night, this was not a huge deal, but a little annoying.
The porch is something to behold, and we spent a great deal of time out there. Just a really nice spot and a great week. Property was clean and well maintained, and I would recommend this to anyone.
