4 Bedroom, 4 Bath - Sleeps up to 12 on Lutsen Mountain Hike and Ski in/out
About Richard Kaung
Richard and Annie live in the Twin Cities with young kids Grace and Max. We grew up in Minnesota and after living in New York City and San Francisco came back to Minnesota. We all love skiing, hiking and exploring the north shore.
Richard Kaung purchased this Townhome in 2014
Why Richard Kaung chose Lutsen
After coming up many times to ski and hike we wanted to get a place on Lutsen Mountain where our extended family could gather and create great memories of getting away from hectic life. Beautiful Hwy 61 reminded us of Hwy 1 north of San Francisco (where we lived awhile back). We ski in the winter and hike during the summer It has been a fantastic base for us to explore Grand Marais, canoe the Boundary Waters, venture to Canada to Thunder Bay, go Amethyst Mining, check out Sudan Mine, boat ride to Isle Royale, hike the gorgeous state parks and even parts of the Superior Hiking Trail, relax on the shore and go agate hunting, see the northern lights (if we are lucky) and even sail on Lake Superior. We have a local property manager to help with any of your immediate stay needs.

Beautiful house, great location. Very close to Lutsen attractions :)
The property suited my family's needs. We liked the layout and setting. The challenge was all the hassles we encountered before and during our stay.
First, I was told we could not have a service dog when Vrbo policy says that service animals must be allowed. "HomeAway requires all property owners and managers with properties located in the United States and U.S. Territories to accommodate guests who require the use of a service animal. This applies regardless of a property’s normal house rules pet policy since service animals are not pets." The owner relented after I said our service dog had been trained by Can-do Canines, and we would be responsible for any damage. I am not certain he was aware of your company's policy.
Then many things went wrong with the facility, primarily the refrigerator stopped working, The owner told me to use the two small refrigerators which didn't accommodate 1/3 of the food I had brought for our family. We managed with coolers in the kitchen, but mealtime was certainly more chaotic than it had to be.
Then two days into the visit, our entry code did not work. We were sent a new one, but not before some of our family members panicked. Then the microwave wouldn't latch. It would work if you stood there and held the door. Then the air conditioning went out. We also observed an unsafe balcony due to ice upheaval, a wobbly banister, a broken chair, and a ripped screen. None of those things really bothered us, because we were trying to overlook them and just enjoy being together.
What was most problematic was the owner's response to my emails about the maintenance. When I wrote to say the refrigerator and microwave were out, the owner said that he had visited the place the week before and everything had been in perfect working order. By that statement he was implying that we, the guests were responsible for all the broken things. The large weeds growing out of the pavement at the front door indicated that anyone who really loved the place had not visited in some time.
In fairness, the owner did offer to reimburse us $300 for the lost food and gave us a late checkout. Yet, by the end of the stay I did not want to hear any more about how he loved his vacation home.
Perfect spot for mountain biking
Property was as reported and perfect for our group. Plenty of space and super convenient.
Couldn’t find a washer/dryer, but wasn’t a big deal. Could use a few extra serving plates for meals. Otherwise, all great!
Once again a group of us girls utilized this place for the Superior Trail run. It is the perfect set up and location!
Nice place. Larger than it looks
Owner was responsive and easy to work with.
Host was excellent!
Additional key local activities include multiple events (brewery event, mountain biking 99r, Moose Madness, artist events, etc...). Other local favorites are agate hunting on the beaches, dog sledding and evenings around the resort fire pit with s'mores!.
