About the property

Kendall Apartment is a sunny, spacious, private efficiency apartment which is tastefully decorated by its artists owners and surrounded by lovely flower and vegetable gardens. The apt. space is divided into two rooms, one with a queen size bed with sitting area and small desk and the other is a fully equipped kitchen. Large glass doors open to a private deck with a table for outside dining and a small yard with lounge chairs. Situated a short distance from the the village, it is a quiet setting to unwind and relax. This is not an ocean front accommodation but Its just a short walk to the hiking trails, shore, cliffs and spectacular sunsets. WIFI available. Well-behaved pets are welcome. Rented weekly, with changeovers on Saturdays during high season. A very special get a away for writers and artists and for anyone that wants to unwind and relax.

Adequate space for two unpretentious adults.

Everything would have been fine if the bed had not creaked with every movement and if the mattress had not sagged in the middle. Otherwise all fine, and Monhegan is lovely. We had a very good time, but more sleep would have been nice!

Lovely garden, wifi slow.

screen door in bdrm doesnt close properly. Blankets and mattress pad could use laundering. But generally charming, nice garden views, light and breezes through windows. Wonderful raspberries in garden.

Owner's Response: Thanks for taking the time to let us know how your visit to Kendal Apartment was. We really appreciate and rely on our guests to let us know the good and bad about their visit. I'm sorry about the WiFi. Sadly, it's a problem on the island. We have service from the only provider on Monhegan. To eliminate weak links, we have placed repeaters throughout the property to make sure the signal that is available is as strong as possible. Monhegan is special because it is remote! Sadly, the WiFi kind of stinks for the same reason. I spent some time fiddling with the screen door after reading your concern and it seems to be working better. As always, though, we have a caretaker on the island for any problems we can't resolve from afar. We encourage our guests to let us know of any problems they have so that we can ask friends on the island to help resolve them ASAP. Likewise, I'm sorry about the blankets and mattress pads needing a wash. We have purchased more to go into the "cycle' and will ask our cleaning help to make sure that these things are refreshed as needed. Finally, if you like the raspberries (it is general knowledge on the island that our patch is the best!) you should try the blackberries in the late summer and fall. They are all over the island and the yard and are my absolute favorite!

Cozy ,well located apartment on Monhegan

The Kendall apartment is a cozy, well -located studio apartment on Monhegan. The online descriptions were accurate other than the place was dusty. I do not think the previous guests cleaned the apartment before they left. The apartment is adjoined to a larger rental space and you can hear your neighbors clearly. It was great when the people next door weren't in but in the evening the normal noise was distracting.

If you don't mind this, the place is great!

Owner's Response: Thanks for the compliments on the apartment. I'm really sorry that the space wasn't as clean as it should have been. Because Monhegan is so small and has so few full time residents, sometimes it is hard for the few cleaners working on the island to do deep cleanings if the accommodations aren't already reasonably clean when they begin. This is why we ask that, insofar as possible, guests leave the space as they found it. We try to always make sure that cleaning supplies are readily available. Beginning in the spring of 2017, the person who cleans the apartment and the house has dropped her other clients to focus only on the Kendal Apartment and Magnolia House. This will undoubtedly help to ensure the spaces are ready for the next guests, but we will continue to ask for, rely on, and appreciate our guests for leaving the homes as they find them. I am sorry, too, that the noise from the guests in the adjoining house was disruptive. We clearly ask for mutual respect, especially during "quiet hours." Despite the properties being connected, making disruptive noise a potential problem, many, if not most of our guests, are long time renters and do not have problems. I'm sorry that this wasn't the case during your visit. If you do return to Kendal, I am always available and happy to help mitigate any trouble you have with house guests or any other problems. Thanks for taking the time to let us know the good and bad. We really rely on you and our other guests to help us live up to the magic of the island itself.

Great Rental

We rented Magnolia house and the attached Kendall apt. in June! It was perfect for a family gathering of 10 adults, 2 children and 2 dogs! The house was well equipped, comfortable and our 5 year old loved the playhouse and toys.

Our only disappointment was that the home is advertised as having a washing machine but it appeared seldom used (dirty) and was not even hooked up in the basement. We had counted on this convenience as our daughter has a newborn in cloth diapers...... We were able to use the laundry mat in town, but the change machine wasn't working and it was hard to get enough quarters to do a load. Please remove the washing machine from the home information if it isn't really available.

Monhegan is beautiful and the Magnolia House it great! My review would be 5 stars if the washer worked. Thank you for sharing your home with us!

It broke right before the season, and as you can imagine, it is very difficult to get a replacement out and hooked up. Wonderful stay at Kendall Apartment

My boyfriend and I spent a week at Kendall Apartment with our Golden Retreiver, and it could not have been more perfect. The apartment is in an ideal location between the ferry dock, "town center" and the Monhegan Brewing Company and Lobster Cove. We arrived to a very clean, comfy space with the special touch of flowers from the beautiful yard arranged on the kitchen table. We enjoyed spending time on the deck, and used the kitchen to prepare most meals. The kitchen was missing a cheese grater, and we notified the owner who responded immediately to let us know he would add one to the inventory on his next trip to the island. There was a family staying in the main portion of the house, and we still felt comfortable in our own private space. Be prepared to bring sheets, towels, and food staples if you plan to cook in the house. You can purchase perishable items at the store on the island, and we purchased fresh fish at the Fish Market on Fish Beach (wonderful!!) every day. Also be prepared to clean the house before you leave as there are not enough workers on the island to cover all of the rental cleaning in the summer. This was not a problem for us, and only took 45 minutes to clean the space well before catching the 10:15 ferry back to New Harbor. During our week, we hiked all of the island trails (they are rugged in parts, but the beauty is indescribable), practiced Yoga daily at the Monhegan Wellness Center, enjoyed happy hour on the Kendall Apartment deck every afternoon, and walked to the lighthouse to take in amazing sunsets. We also toured many of the artist studios on the island, and had a great time at the July 4 party (with live music) at Monhegan Brewing Company. I also recommend bringing hiking boots or sturdy shoes, bug spray, liquor if you drink it (you can purchase beer and wine on island). Although the tap water is potable (and I always drink tap water), the island tap water doesn't taste good - we purchased water from the store. A final note from our dog, who enjoyed his stay more than us...he loved the apartment, the island, and became quite popular during our week stay. Bringing a dog who is well socialized and well behaved is a great way to meet people while on vacation. He went everywhere with us on the island, including hiking and inside some of the stores and galleries. We will be back to Monhegan, and when we return we will stay at Kendall Apartment!!

perfectly situated!

We arrived on the island having never been before. A short walk from the dock, we were pleased to finally (we'd been dreaming about this vacation for three months!) see Kendall Apartment. Beautiful wild flowers adorn the yard, and the patio and surrounding yard is as private as mentioned. This apartment is truly bright and sunny. The kitchen and living area is perfect for two. We stocked a large cooler with Trader Joe's treats and had most meals on the deck, watching the Monarch butterflies. Within a day or two, it felt like home.

Location, location, location. Kendall Apartment is conveniently located near Lobster Cove (see it!), The Black Duck (try their pie!) and The Novelty (delicious ice cream; get there before it closes at 8 PM!). Just up the hill from The Novelty is a perfect spot for watching the sunset... and star gazing. We saw numerous shooting stars! If you're an early riser (or even if you're not), be sure to take the Burnthead Trail out to the cliffs for the sunrise. We were also charmed by the colorful chickens in the front yard of the house across the street (their eggs are for sale at Carina).

It was a pleasure to rent this apartment from Dyan and we would definitely recommend it!
